DS got suspended from school! (a vent)

You've got to be kidding me?! I went to Catholic school from 1967-1981, and they stopped using paddling long before I was there.

You mean you didn't have nuns with rulers slapping your hands??? :rotfl: My DH had some nasty nuns in his school.

We still had paddling when I was in school and I graduated in 1985. It was usually given as a choice to the student for something pretty serious. For example, I had a boyfriend senior year who got punched in the face by another kid. The other's kid punishment was a choice between being paddled and something else -- 3 day suspension maybe? But that meant missing out on his basketball game. Can't have that! His coach was standing there and TOLD him to take the paddling. It must have been pretty bad because he came out of the office crying!

How is this the son's fault?

EDIT: That sounded like I was accusing you, Marseeya. I don't mean it to sound that way!

I mean, as an ADULT, if I forget an appointment I don't get thrown in jail!!!
Forget a court appearance and see what happens. ;)

Suspending a kid for missing detention is ridiculous.

^^^I know! Instead of suspending him why didn't they just reschedule the detention? I think suspention was too much

:rotfl: I'm sure he should have hitched a ride to the nearest Walmart (30 miles away) and used his allowance money to get himself a pair of shorts.

(I didn't take it as an accusation -- I feel the same way! It's my fault he didn't have gym shorts, no matter how good the reason behind it.)

Maybe you could ask the school why they require something for gym class that people can't get in town. What do people do that can't afford to drive the 30 miles to buy the gym clothing. What is wrong with regular old shorts and a t-shirt?

In my highschool, when we didn't have gym clothes (we could wear any athletic clothes, shorts, pants, etc. just no jeans or things like that) we just had to sit on the side. Sometimes you could just do homework and other times they'd make you write an essay or something. If it happened a lot, your grade would go down but they'd never send you to detention for it. Sometimes they'd embarass you and ask why you weren't prepared while taking attendance...that was worse than anything!

That's like if a student forgets a textbook...I don't think they need to go to detention, but it might warrant docking their "daily" points or participation points or something.

Aside from the fact that I think this shouldn't have warranted a detention in the first place, out-of-school suspension for a missed detention is dumb. This isn't a court date we're talking about, they could have simply re-scheduled it the next day and THEN considered suspension if it was missed again.

I wasn't really sure why he missed it in the first date....was their confusion about the date?

Pure carelessless on his part. He looked at the date on the pink slip, and it said the 13th. He asked somebody what the date was and they said the 12th, so he figured he'd have the detention on the next day.

We were the same as you in high school. Whenever we forgot our clothes, we just had to sit to the side and had points docked. We girls did it on purpose during certain times of the month.

I'm not getting this....the pink slip they gave him on the 12th said the 13th? Why did it say the 13th? Or did the kid who tell him it was the 12th say the wrong date when it was actually the 13th? This is like a brain teaser for me....haha I used to be so good at those.

But it wasn't such a slap in the face when the young lady did it, cried about it, then bragged about her crocodile tears later. My son shed tears over it, but quietly behind closed doors, so there was nobody to be impressed with "theatrics." That's besides the point.

And that young "lady" will probably act like this for the rest of her life. The school did not do her a favor. They are inflicting her in the rest of the world.

I don't know what the answer is, but some of the bad decison's tha are made by schools are bourne out of frustration with trying to control a situation that is seemingly out of control. Sometimes this results in overly harsh punishments.

LOL, I know I'm not very clear on it!

He received the pink slip ON the 13th and the slip was written correctly. The kid who told him the date was mistaken.

I know! Let's pink slip the kid who gave him the wrong date! :rotfl:
