My son is in 8th grade this year. They just received NEW social studies books this year. They are learning American History this year. This book's final chapter is The War on Terrorism. I remember as we watched the news on Sept 11th that someday, they would be learning about this in school one day. I never imagined it would be so soon.

As glad as I am that our district is able to get new textbooks, I am sad that the children in today's world need to learn about such hatred and hostility. :( Kind of makes the fears of the children of my generation (rememeber stories of the "red button"? ) seem so distint and almost ridiculous.

Yes it is sad. But it seems to me that each generation has had to learn about hatred and hostility in some form -- the Holocaust, the Civil War, World War I & II, Vietnam, and many more. It's part of life and part of history.

I always save the newspapers from these life-altering events (good news and bad). You never know when your child will need to refer to them for a class project. I still have the ones from men landing on the moon, Kennedy's assassination, etc.

May we never forget...

It is sad. As a mom I know the feeling of wanting to protect our children from all the bad in the world. However, maybe by learning such current events they will make the world a better place. When I was in school our text books were so outdated that most things just seemed like ancient history and didn't leave much impression at the time.

wow i wish we would of gotten new history books, it would be interesting to see how they explain sept. 11th in the history books. we have a section in the back of our year book for that year that talked about sept. 11th. no other year book has put something like that in it. i think it would be good if we had history books on it. when sept. 11 happened our school kept it pretty quiet, most students didn't know what was happening. my twin found out through me who happened to be in the one class that allowed us to watch what was going on. the rest of the class forbid us to talk about it. i'd love to be able to discuss it in history.
