It was a big weekend...after 3.5 years, DS (9) tested for and earned his black belt in Taekwondo. He did very well, but he did break his second board on his third (and final!) try.

I don't often brag about my kids. Quite the opposite -- to their horror! And this might be my first bragging post. But it was a big deal to him and a long journey.

The only problem is that now he's really really into it. He was in a slump for a while there. And we've been feeling that the school isn't as great as it was 3 years ago, but way expensive. So we're planning on finishing out the contract and looking around for another school or another activity. Now this has him bummed because he's the big-shot BB. Hoping to find another school that will honor his belt. Not very hopeful though.

Anyway, it's been fun!

Way To Go!!!!! Tell your Son Congratulations :cheer2:
What program does he do ??

My DD 13 is a 2nd degree decided Testing in Dec.. for 2nd Sr.. she is also a certified instructor... She Loves it... We do Taekwondo America..

Congrats!! I know how it must feel. We have just begun with the TKD and DS got his purple belt last night!

Congratulations to your DS!

I am not saying this to be negative in anyway so I hope it doesn't come across that way. I am going to assume your DS does ATA? They are one of the only ones I am aware of that will give children that young a BB. Our DD went through the program. Over time, we were also disappointed with the quality of the program and yet the cost kept rising. So, now we had a little one with a BB and a program we weren't interested in anymore. However, she was a big, bad BB now and felt she should be able to go into any program as a BB. It doesn't work that way. Thankfully, we found an awesome program that she instantly loved. She did start at a yellow belt (one step above a white belt). But, she had to. The program was so different then ATA. She was learning all over again. We told her she did an excellent job getting her BB and then tucked it away. We told her about all the different types of martial arts available and if you want to become a better at it, you need to learn different ones. She was actually fine with starting over especially when she saw how different the program was. Good luck to your son.

Congrats to him!!! DS is a Tiny Tiger in his ATA school and he's now a super yellow belt after a year or so. :) :)

Congratulations to your son!!

Any TaeKwonDo school should honor his black belt.... Our son also has a black belt & has been at it for almost four years now... he's in a bit of a slump right now as he's been busy with baseball, but we could still take him to an TKD school & have him enrolled as a black belt....

Thank you! No, that's not negative at all. That's exactly where we are. He knows that few - if any - schools will "honor" his black belt (as in, letting him wear it.) I'm kind of trying to stress how cool it might be to earn another black belt in addition to this one. We'll hang this one on the wall like a trophy and he'll move on.

I actually think he's up for something a little more challenging martial arts-wise. It's just that the thrill of the new BB is clouding everything else!

So we'll be traveling the same path you have - it's so nice to see that it worked out for your daughter.

Thanks so much, everyone else, for the congrats.

Congratulations to all of you!!!! My son just got his black belt in June and I know how you feel! I was so nervous, but he did great.... even with a healing broken arm! He broke it in April... 2 months before testing... :faint: But it was such an amazing thing to watch him do that... as I know you felt that same way too.

Check around... our instructor said that as long as you have the certificate most schools will honor the belt. but I guess it depends on the type of Tae Kwon Do. What about going towards Karate or Judo? Or instructors son went throught the ranks of all 3 martial arts. Pretty cool.

Congrats again! :cheer2:

Congrats to you and your DS. I would think that any other TKD school would honor his belt. Another style may be somthing all together different. I know in my son's Dojo (Shotokan)we have had several students come in from other styles and the Sensi honors their previous belts and they are allowed to wear them(their training begins at the white belt level though). There is one TKD Black Belt that has started coming and he is givin the the same respect as one of our own Shotokan Black Belts. You are quite right to be bragging, this is a very huge accomplishment. My DS has a tourny this Sat. and if he does well he will take is division in Kata. His Sensi told us that if that happens he will "concider" testing him for his Black Belt in May next year. Again Congrats :cool1: :cool1:    :cool1: :cool1:

Congrats to your DS :cheer2:

My oldest DS' are blue belts so we still have a while to go.
