I think the best thing to do is go to the IRS office in the nearest city that has one. Ask to speak to a "Revenue Agent". This person can look in the system and get a complete trianscript of the return online and also a repoort that shows all adjustments and payments related to the return. If there is an error it can be trzcked down and corrected on the spot. And if the check does have to be returned it canbe taken care of right there.
And if it was an error by the preparer, I would ask for reimbursement of out of pocket expenses, such as mileage, to get this straightened out. And then I would never use that preparer again.
