DS-17 Prom Driver-What Would You Do?

haha, just sit yourself in the back of the van under a blanket and surprise them if anything pops up. (ok, I made myself laugh on that one!)

Seriously, I hope they aren't bring drinks into your van either. Something is fishy about teens wanting to use a mini-van.

I'd do a limo. This just sounds like a bad scenerio and way too much for a 16yo to possibly have to deal with on prom night.

In my state your son would not be able to have more than 2 passengers in the car. I also thought that driving after 9 wasn't allowed until the age of 18, unless it was coming to and from work. Maybe thats has changed since I was a teen.

I am normally pretty easy going but after I got a first hand view of how other teens act at my sons 16th birthday party I would say no way. In the first place prom equals limo for a reason. It's just better that way.

Here are MO rules...

During the first 6 months that the teen driver holds the Intermediate License, they are not allowed to drive with more than one passenger under the age of 19 unless the passengers are immediate family members. After the first 6 months has passed the Intermediate License holder may drive with up to 3 passengers under the age of 19 who are not immediate family members.
The Intermediate license holder may not drive between the hours of 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM unless they are accompanied by a licensed driver that is a minimum of 21 years of age except under the following conditions:
To or From a School Sanctioned Activity

To or From a Place of Employment

In Emergency Situations

My dd who is 18 can go ahead now and get a full driving license now. She needs to go and do that.

•At age 18, or within the 30 days immediately preceding his/her 18th birthday, the intermediate license holder may apply for a full driver license.

When my godson had his prom 2 years ago and again this year when he went with a friend, the kids were not even allowed to drive their own cars. The prom was not local. We live north of LA and this year it was held at Universal Studios. The kids either went in limos, school buses or what was known as a "fun bus" where a bunch of kids chipped in. When they came back, they had the option of going to an after prom party sponsored by the school, but they couldn't leave once they got there--if they left, they couldn't get back in.

If you trust your son let him take the minivan, if you don't trust him don't let him take it. They aren't taking the minivan to look cool.
I think he is just going for the "expirence." The fact that he wants to come home right afterwards shows that.

Something just doesn't seem right to me, and I don't think I'd allow it. Why isn't he going to the party? Because he wasn't invited,or because you won't allow it? It just sounds like he is being taken advantage of as their Chauffeur...It just seems weird that his date is willing to ditch him halfway through the night. (I doubt her parents are thrilled with that either...you take my DD to the prom, I want you to make sure she gets home safely.) Either he's being taken advantage of, or there are some plans you are unaware of. As some others have said, I also can't see teens WANTING to show up in the prom in a Mini-van, new or not. Something just seeems very fishy with that. I think I would duggest that you or another parent drive the kids, they all chip in for a limo, or your DS and his date drive alone. Something just seems like you may not have the whole story here.

Hi!

Prom is OVER and nothing bad happened. My DS did as he was told and arrived home fine.

To answer someones question: I did not want him at this party because of this girl with a questionable reputation and I don't know their parents at all and he had no desire to go. His date went after prom because she wanted to. My son and her are not dating and just went as friends.

MY DS had a fun time and other than ask details about that I'm not saying too much more. He obeyed us and as for the other kids they have their own parents to answer to.

Next time I'll do things differently. Live and learn. Thanks for all your concerns and comments. I pretty much agree with you all and hope others can learn from this thread!

Thanks again! Bye! :)

Thanks for the update. Glad he had a good time and all went well. Sounds like he has a level head on his shoulders. Mom, you did good :thumbsup2.
