anybody elses kid only wear a certain type of clothes? DS use to wear anything i would buy, now if its not from PacSun he wont wear it. and of course the stuff isnt cheap.

My daughter is kind of like that. Her shoes can only be name brands. Mostly skater or surfer shoes. She's not as bad with her clothes yet though. It just kills me that she dresses so grundgy but it costs so much!!!

The skateboarding phase will be over in a year or so. If you have a TJ Maxx or Marshall's, don't forget to look there regularly. We found hoodies and Tshirts there. Also, Kohl's carries World Industries stuff, if that's his brand.

If you don't buy it, he can't wear it.

I was thinking the exact same thing! As long as wardrobe expenses come out of mine and my husband's pocket, then they wear what we purchase or go naked. So far they've been fully clothed and no one has ever rebelled. I have a 12, 9 and 7 yr. old. And to qualify this - they have pushed for one style/label or another, but we don't indulge. I take that back. I have stopped getting my son's clothes at Children's Place because his peers know what the logo "PLC" means on his graphic t's and they'll tease him about it. (Wonder what his friends would think if they knew a few of his jeans came from WalMart???)

I agree with "if you don't buy it, he can't wear it"--if it really bothers you.

My DD almost exclusively wears basketball stuff. Long shorts (at least to her knees) and mostly M.College shirts. It doesn't bother me in the least because she is covered up at least! LOL She wears a uniform to school so she looks pretty neat most of the time.

There is always going to be a style that kids go nuts over. It happened when my parents were kids, it happened when I was a kid and I'm sure it will happen when I have kids.

My DS15 & DS18 are "skaters", and wears only skater clothes. My youngest has been dressing like this since he as about 10... so whoever said this look will phase out in a year or two, well, maybe not. They used to shop at PacSun, now I get a lot of their clothes on line at www.SkateAmerica.com www.CCS.com www.activemailorder.com www.utilityboardsupply.com There are a number of online places to shop. We also have a local shop called Rascals that my son likes. But you are right... they ain't cheap!!

My son has a thing for Andrew Reynolds, so any piece of clothing that has his name on it, my son wants.

Yes, the skateboarding/surf wear is big here too. My DD is into Pac Sun and Billabong. My solution has been making her earn money to purchase her own indulgences like that. She babysits, etc., but is pretty thrifty - when it is her money that is involved. ;) She still buys it, but less of it.

I also enjoy buying my kids clothes they like.
I enjoy it TOO much according to my son. :rotfl: He is a snowboarder but won't wear the volcom shirts I tried to buy him because the "punks" at his school wear them so that is out. He will wear Billabong and *********** so I buy alot of their shirts. Thier pants won't fit him because he is on the thin side so we are still stuck wtih adjustable waist pants from Old Navy.
My older daughter will wear any snowboard brand I buy for her but I don't really buy that much for her yet. 90 percent or more of her clothes are from Limited Too since she is also skinny and they have tons of slim styles. My youngest daughter will wear pretty much anything so far.
I like all the cool styles they have out there for kids!!! :thumbsup2

Same here. I buy many items on sale for them when I go to the mall.

For school they get a budget & when it's gone, it's gone. They also budget their allowances each week so if they really want something, they have their own money to buy it.

I guess I understand the "if I'm paying for it, they'll wear what I buy" philosophy, but I also believe that life is tough for young kids & whether we like it or not, peer pressure if a huge thing. If I have to pay a few dollars more just so my kids feel comfortable & part of the "in" crowd, then I'll do it.

JMO!!! :)

Based on the OP's post, it sounds liek she doesn't "enjoy" buying her kids clothes that they like due to the expense. That's fine.

I'd give the kid a clothing allowance, and when it's gone, it's gone.

13 is old enough that you could start giving your DS a budget when you go shopping. When he NEEDS (not wants) some clothes, decide on your budget ahead of time. Take him shopping and let him decide which clothes meet his needs. You could also show him that he can get more for his money if he shops sales and you could have him look at clothes online too.

If DS makes the mistake of spending too much money on just a few clothing items and doesn't have enough to wear, teach him to wash his laundry. :lmao:

not a big issue with my kids-if they don't wear what they have they won't have anything to wear. they go to a school with a pretty conservative dress code so i'm not going to buy stuff they can't get reasonable use out of. some of the public schools around here have banned any type of clothing with logos or writing on them so it's getting more common to see kids in the non "brand" stuff.

i know a gal who complains about how her dd (11) REFUSES to wear anything but brand name from specific stores, and how this frustrates her to no end (and causes big arguments with dh who is floored over how much the kid's clothes cost). i don't say a word but am thinking back to when the kid was younger and how mom would only dress her in designer/brand name stuff saying "i would'nt let her be seen in anything other than x". so where do you think the kid learned her clothing tastes?

I agree with the "if you don't buy it they can't wear it" philosophy too. However, I never had any type of name brand clothing growing up. I never complained as I had a single mom and money was very tight. So, I guess I'm sort of living vicariously through my daughter now. We do shop at Marshall's and TJ Maxx most of the time. They usually have the shirt brands that she likes. I've actually only paid for one pair of shoes for her and that was at Christmas. The rest she has bought with her own birthday or Christmas money. We are major clearance and sale shoppers too. She knows that if she wants the expensive stuff she is going to get less clothes. She's never REFUSED to wear anything, but she does prefer the name brands and styles she likes.

I'm with Damo though. I too like buying my girls stuff they like. I feel I've hit the lottery when I get a cool outfit they love on sale.

My son also likes the skateboard shoes....I hate paying a fortune for ANY sneakers, whether they are Vans or Reeboks. I watch for sales (last week I found $60 Vans for $25!! :woohoo: ). As far as the "name" hoodies, I found a wide assortment at our local Marshalls early in the season. He's not too concerned about the name of the jeans, just as long as they are baggy. I refuse to buy the ones that show his boxers...no way, no shape, no form!! :headache:

I think most people like to buy their kids things they like. I think it gets out of hand when Junior will only wear clothes from such and such. Yeah, I'd like to buy all my things from Ann Taylor but that's not realistic.

I'm lucky because my kids hate to shop. I'll beg them to go out with me for some new jeans and they don't care. So when they see something they like, as long as it's not outrageous, I'll get it for them.

I think it's good to teach kids to buy a few brand name things that they love balanced by some everyday "Target" clothes.

We're going through the PacSun phase too now. My daughter is really into it. I usually take her to TJMaxx first since sometimes they have the skater clothes there.
I had to visit PacSun HQ last month for business. The first thing I asked them was if they had an outlet onsite! Of course there was none but I had to try right?

I think, as others have said, it may be time to impliment a budget. We had very little money when I was a kid.

I can remember my mom giving me and my brother $100 for new school clothes each fall. DB had to have name brand jeans and sneakers, so his was gone with one pair of jeans and one pair of sneakers (and maybe some underwear). He then worked odd jobs around the neighborhood to earn the money for the rest of the clothes he wanted. Me? I was happy to shop at discount stores (Ames, Kmart) and get a whole wardrobe of no name clothes with my money.

Make some rules (must follow school dress code, no vulgar words on shirts, must change clothes every day), give him a budget, and let him decide the rest.
