my dryer has started squeaking when we use it...sounds like metal on metal, and its getting progressively worse (started a couple of months ago). its only 3.5 years old, but unfortunately not under warrantee anymore.

any ideas what it could be? its $100 just to have someone come out and diagnose the problem. I know I am going to have to bite the bullet, but wondering if anyone has any ideas....hoping it might be something obvious that I could check/try first.

thanks!

Our dryer had a loose screw that made a squeaking-type noise. It was one you could see and get to just by opening the door to the dryer. Tightened it back up and it's been fine ever since.

Usually it is just the belt that turns the drum is either loose or has slipped off. If so it's a simple fix. Find your dryer brand info on line, there may be a troubleshooting area that will help.

Sometimes you can also order the part you need & fix it yourself.

Dryers are fairly simple machines without a lot of parts to go bad.

thanks! you guys are giving me hope that it isn't too awful a repair. just struggling to find anything online that is free to figure out. any site suggestions? its a maytag ensignia gas dryer, if that matters.

I've looked for anything obvious like a loose screw or the like, but nothing. and I've combed thru the owners manual and nothing there at all.

I have to run two loads today and it is really getting bad, so would really like to try to figure this out. guess I'll have to bite the bullet and call someone tomorrow if I can't.

I have been told in the past that it is the "rollers". Don't know what they are however.

I have been told in the past that it is the "rollers". Don't know what they are however.

The drum (clothes holder) rests on 2 rollers that allow it to be spun by the belt. The roller axles may need a shot of WD40.

My dryer had a squeek that was coming from the fan that moves the hot air. Tightening the fan on its axle stopped the squeek.

If you're careful (that's my disclaimer), you can run the dryer with the front removed (having a helper is key). This might help to isolate the squeek. Remove the front. Press the switch that the closed door usually presses. Start the dryer. Release the door swith to stop.

you probably need a new belt my dryer does the same and it needs a new belt

OP, It could be a number of things. I did a goodle search and found lots of web sites where they show the different dryers, how they come apart and where each part is. They can help you diagnose your problem.

I have taken my dryer apart a couple of times by myself (and I'm a petite, single mom) and replaced just about every part! I use my digital camera and take pictures as I dismantle the dryer so if I go to put it back together, and run into trouble, I have something to refer back to!:thumbsup2

I'm so proud of myself each time I figure something out myself and don't have to call a repairman!:)

I had the same thing happen and it was the bearings going out. I forget what the cost was, but it wasn't too much to get them replaced.
