Dry Mouth Relief?

I had surgery on Monday and as a result I can not breathe at all through my nose, not even a tiny bit. Breathing through my mouth is awful--within just a few minutes my lips, tongue and mouth are bone dry and I have to get some water. This means that I am only sleeping for about 15-20 mins at a time. I still have at least 4 more days like this and I am going crazy. And even with constant water and brushing my teeth/tongue I have cotton mouth like you wouldn't believe.

I have a humidifier running right next to me but that doesn't see to be doing much. The air here is actually quite humid already. Anyone have any solutions I can try?

I saw some mouth washes and sprays in the pharmacy that are made for this problem. I bet a pharmacist could point you in the right direction.

Biotene products are available over the counter. They make rinses, mouthwash and gels to help with xeristomia. Look for them in the oral care section of drug stores.

I had an outpatient procedure for kidney stones a few weeks ago. They gave me a lot of drugs in the hospital so that I wouldn't throw up when I came out of the general anesthesia and when I rode home.

The procedure was on a Wednesday. My mouth was so dry I couldn't eat crackers, toast or bread. About the only things I could stand eating were applesauce and soup. On Saturday it hadn't gotten better, so I sent my brother out to get popsicles for me, which helped.

The only reason I mention it is that my procedure, obviously, didn't prevent me from breathing through my nose. And I've had bad colds where I couldn't breathe through my nose.

I'm wondering if your mouth is dry because you have to breathe through your mouth, or if your mouth is dry due to drugs you got at the hospital.

Anyway, I hope you're feeling better by now.
