Dry, Cracked Skin...strange solution?

Every winter, my skin gets really dry and cracked and hurts! A few years ago, someone gave me an awesome tip... Udder Balm. It's not that "Walmart wannabe" stuff they sell in a cow spotted container. Nope, it's the real deal! Where do you buy it? ...the farm store! (it's not "bag balm" either...it's udder balm...and it's a little amusing to read the directions on it) Works great for me and I gave some to our aunt last year and she hasn't had a problem since then.
Anyone else have a solution that is full proof?

I've seen the 'udder' cream. I can never tell if it's really udder cream, or just clever packaging. I know they sell horse shampoo too, but I'm not sure if it's different or not.

Ok, take this with a grain of salt, but I've heard crisco is amazing on dry cracked skin! I don't know if I would ever try it, but sometimes my skin gets so dry and itchy that I get desperate for anything.

If my hands get really bad, I put vaseline on them and then cover with cotton socks before bed. The next morning my hands back to normal.

I use super glue on any cracks that do form (especially those nasty ones on the sides of my fingers). It keeps a seal on them so they don't hurt.

Does anyone have a solution for dry cracked skin on heels? My heels are terrible. I get pedicures every couple weeks and I use that heel cream as well. But they are still cracked looking. :confused3

Anyone have any miracle cures?

The vaseline idea is good. I have horribly dry, itchy winter skin. Mostly on my legs. I have tried so much and nothing really works - not even Hydrocortisone Cream.

I may try the Vaseline idea - with leggings or something similar.

My Great Grandma used to Pee on her hands
to prevent cracking
I however have never tried it

I would be willingly to go to a feed store and get it. I just went to the Doctor and got some prescription stuff. It still does not help me.

I posted recently about the Eucerin Calming Creme and that was working until winter got here. Now forget it. I hate my skin.

I am going to try things from the inside. Lots of water and vitamins. I sick of this.

Thanks for the tip, I am always looking.

I have had some good luck with the Kerasol ointment that they have out for cracked heals. It has salicylic acid in it which breaks down the dry skin. But you have to continually use it. If you stop, it comes right back.

Does anyone have a problem with their legs itching? In the summer, as long as I use an unscented lotion on my legs after I shave, they're ok. In winter though, no matter what I do, my legs below my knees itch all of the time. It drives me crazy. I wonder if the udder cream would help with that.

God, I'm having the same problem. I find that when I slather the Cetaphil Cream (the one in the green tub) on every night, it seems to work.

I get those too and they HURT! I read somewhere that they are often caused by going barefoot or wearing sandals, etc because they allow your feet to spread more and cause the cracking. I am ok when I wear tennis shoes or other good shoes but with boot season hear, my snow boots are a little less form fitting.

I have read that when your skin is dry (definitely more likely in cold weather with dry heat) that it is actually more "open" and sensitive. Try using a hypoallergenic like Neutrogena, Cetaphil or something else sensitive skin like.

I can use scented lotion in the summer, but it makes me break out in a rash in the winter.

I also love Udder Balm, BTW!!! And, I love the Eucerin Cream. Also anything that is 50% or 100% Shea Butter (like the stuff from BBW) seems to work great! I will sleep with socks on and slather up my feet beforehand!

Yeah, did you ever notice that men typically have smooth feet - at least my husband does...not a callus or crack in them EVER!! But, he rarely wears sandals...only on weekends in summer....typically he has socks and shoes or combat boots on...... Men wear socks more than us and I think it keeps the body oils in and makes them less suspectible to drying.

I have also heard that it is actually bad for your carpets to walk around barefoot all the time cause your body oils rub off on the carpets....thus making the dirt stick to them.

I use Amlactin...you may need to ask your pharmacy if they carry it. It used to be available by prescription only, but it went over-the-counter a few years ago. (It was called Lac-Hydrin 12%.) It comes in a cream and a lotion. The cream was a bit greasy for me--I use the lotion. It is the only thing that keeps my arms and legs from getting those little red bumps on them!

Makes a lot of sense to try to heal from the inside. Cod liver oil totally cured my dd's horrible excema. In 6 weeks, I saw improvement, in 8 weeks, it was gone, and has been for over a year. And she had tried every prescription available, every cream, every bath- nothing worked, not even temporarily. I'm sure it would help lubricate from within. Do a search for "skin disorders and omega-3 fatty acids" or "skin conditions and cod liver oil"

I also use a crazy glue -like product called New Skin. It seals the cracks and allows them to heal.

On my heals which don't just look cracked- they are cracked and bleeding, I use a foot tool like sandpaper and rub the dry skin away. I do this every other day. If I do it every day, it CAUSES cracks. Then, I apply vaseline morning and night. Keeping the skin moist prevents it from cracking. This is my first winter in many, many years that my feet aren't hurting from cracks.

Really?
I may have to see if this is so. I do remember it, as I have used everything known to man.

And Cod Liver Oil? I might have to try it.

Now, nothing works. Expect of course if I had a maid, chef, housecleaner, etc....
