The lab wasn't specific, but it is used with a potato. The lab is as follows:
Cut a raw potato in half. Attach copper wires to the terminals of a dry cell. Stick other end into the potato. Take the wires out after two minutes. Look at the holes made by the wires. One of them has a colored ring around it. What color do you see?
Gist is to figure out which terminal is positive.

AAA, AA, C,D, 9-volt, etc. Definitely larger than a D.
