Dry cell battery?

Need for a science lab, where would I find one? Radio shack? (is there a brand name I should look for?)

Alkaline batteries are "dry cell" batteries, as are standard "Ray-o-vac" non-alkaline batteries. An example of a "wet cell" battery is what you have in your car... It's a battery that uses metallic plates suspended in an acid. Dry cell batteries use layers of different metal of differing electric potentials sandwiched with a paste that separates them,

The lab wasn't specific, but it is used with a potato. The lab is as follows:


Cut a raw potato in half. Attach copper wires to the terminals of a dry cell. Stick other end into the potato. Take the wires out after two minutes. Look at the holes made by the wires. One of them has a colored ring around it. What color do you see?

Gist is to figure out which terminal is positive.

Drawing depiction indicates a rather large battery nearly the size if the potato. But I only know he AAA, AA, C,D, 9-volt, etc. Definitely larger than a D.

Dry cell is like any ordinary household type battery, flashlight, etc. Wet cell would be one with liquid acid, like an auto battery.

Ok then you can definitely find that at Radio Shack.

I worked for a batt mfg for 21 years. We made AGM/Non-Spillable batts which many refer to as dry cells as well as Gel cell, and wet cells that we shipped dry with the electrlyte on the side. If you needed something in that range I could help you but for this you definitely do not need something that large

What you're probably looking for is a 6 v. lantern battery. They are about as big as a coffee mug, with two springs on the top for connecting wires to the terminals. These are the "traditional" batteries used for science projects because it is easy to connect wires to the spring terminals.
