drug store hair color?

How do you pick a color to do? I'd like to match my hair, but I really have a lot of different natural colors in my hair. Im auburn and then some blonde mixed in (my hair lightens in the summer from the beach) especilly on the top. Im getting tray at the top and temples and I'd like to cover that up!!!

ANy help appreciated!!

:thumbsup2

I like the one that washes out after 28 days. I forget which one it is but I read the boxes. Seems there is only one or two brands left that wash out. I used a different one not too long ago and it just made my hair look orange. It is going to look horrible when it grows out a bit!

I've colored my hair on my own for years and years. I've only once gone to the salon and I wasn't impressed. Not to mention it took forever at the salon (2+ hours :confused3). I've used a lot of the drugstore brands but my favorite is ColorSilk. Its the cheapest brand out there and it works the best on my hair. I do darker color in the winter (Dark Ash Blonde maybe?) and a lighter color in the summer. The color lasts about 6 weeks and brings a lot of my natural highlights out. In the summer I will throw highlights in as well. Just one of those $10 highlighting kits that you use the pull through cap on.

I always use the Nic N Easy haircolor. It seems to last me about a month, but my hair is very dark and when it starts to grow out the gray really shows more. I always buy it at Walmart, it usually runs about $6.00 a box, it seems like there are always coupons available.

Same for me. I get coupons for $2 off at least once a month in the Sunday paper, so I'm paying less than $5 tax included. And I like it as well as what I've had done a couple of times at a salon.

I used to get highlights at a salon but could not justify the cost. Now I use L'oreal Preference in Medium Ash Blonde. At first I was using other "blonde" colors and my hair took on an orange hue. My hairdresser told me that any hair color with the word "ash" in it is the way to go. No more orange :woohoo:

My hair is medium brown, and has a reddish tone, so I use the ash brown colors to counter it. Keeps it from getting brassy.

As long as I can get haircolor for $5 a month, I'll never go gray!

Has anyone used the new hair color that rubs in like a mousse? I can't think of the name right now, but I have recently seen commercials for it. I too used to get my hair highlighted regularly, but since I'm not working right now I can't justify the cost. My grays are really starting to show:scared1:

I've been getting my hair professionally colored for about 20 years. Last year I wanted to save some money and bought Wella hair color from Sally Beauty. I used it with Wella 20 Developer and an after-conditioner by ion (also SAlly product). I loved the results. You'd have to buy an application bottle to mix the color and developer. I leave the color in for 30 minutes before rinsing, just like the salon does. The color lasts about 4 weeks, before my grey roots show. Aside from being a little messy, it's so simple and the color lasts every bit as well, if not longer than salon processes. I use a color that's very close to my natural hair color.

If you've had haircolor before, it's best to apply the product to the roots, sit for 20 minutes, then for the last 10 minutes, comb the product through to the ends. You DO NOT want to apply the color all over, it'll dry the heck out of your hair.

I would not try to highlight my own hair, however. It's a lot more complicated.

Preference by Loreal is what I use every month for my hair. I receive alot of compliments also.

I colored my sisters hair about two weeks ago. We use Natural Instincts, it washes out over 28 days or so, a semi-permenant color. With a semi-permenant color you can only go darker. The color will not lighten/lift your hair color. I like the color 9N. It is a neutral blonde. It seems to turn out darker than the box shows. I have to watch out when using golden colors, as my hair really picks up the red tones.

I've been coloring my hair for over 25 years. I've done the box color and I've done the salon thing. I didn't feel the salon color was worth the money, nor the time it took to take care of my gray issue when I could do it myself and save a lot of money and time, especially when I was paying for a complete color and she was only doing a root touch-up. :sad2:

My personal preference is Perfect 10 -- love it! It's so easy to use and really does only take 10 minutes once you have it applied.

Let me share my personal tips for coloring your own hair. I color mine in my smallest bathroom with the exhaust fan on. I cover the entire bathroom, sink, toilet, and floor with newspapers because no matter how carefuul you are, you are probably going to drip some of the hair color and once it's dripped on something, it may be difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Then when I'm done coloring, I wrap up everything in the newspapers and then it all goes into the trash. Do not keep any leftover hair color you may not have used. For the price, you can afford to dispose of it. Plus, it always says on the box to not keep it -- never have tried it, so don't know the consequences.

I have what I call hair coloring clothes -- old pair of shorts and an old tank top and a towel I could care less about and either a binder clip or a clothes pin. I wrap the towel around my shoulders and use either the clothes pin or binder clip to hold the towel around my neck -- I hope that makes sense.

Be very careful to not get the hair color in your eyes -- It can be very painful and you end up wasting time trying to flush your eyes with cold water, hoping and praying you don't over-process your hair. Obviously, I speak from experience on this tip. :rolleyes1

I rinse my hair color out in the kitchen sink and use a clean towel on my hair once I've rinsed the color out and applied the conditioner that is usually in the box.

Then I dry and style as usual.

Hope this helps. :)

preference by Loreal

I have never had my hair colored professionally. When I went in for my last cut my stylist said I am doing a great job at home with my color.
I like the applicator in the Loreal box and I think that is what helps me make it look good.

Is there a way to cover the gray without changing the color of the rest of your hair?:)

My beauty supply said to apply the color to the ends for at least 30 minutes IF your color is very light on the ends and darker on top like mine...I was a very bleached blonde and then went darker so the ends are always hard to keep the color on.

I have usually used L'Oreal Preference with the highlights, but it takes forever and I sometimes skip the highlights because of time.

Are any of those colors with built in highlights good? I have med. auburn hair but it is a LOT of gray now.

Thanks,

Dawn
