or something else? Using thumbdrive to move files from desktop to laptop is getting old now that I need to do it more often.

My understanding is Dropbox is webbased & Windows Live Sync is network based?

I know you can share with Dropbox. Can you share with Windows Live Sync?

It depends on how many files you will be using and how you want to use it. I would recommend using Jungle Disk along with Amazon's S3 service if you are storing anything like financial data or personal information. It allows you to pre-encrypt everything you send so on Amazon's end it just looks like pseudo-random noise and only you have the encryption key.

If you are just using it to move pictures or music from place to Microsoft's SkyDrive gives you 25GB of free storage with any Windows Live sign in.

I have heard good things about both dropbox and Live Sync but haven't used either. The best site for all things Windows is Paul Thurrott's Super Site for Windows. Some info on Live Sync is here.

Decided to download both & try them out.

Dropbox: I didn't realize I would have to actually move files or folders from where I like them to into the Dropbox folder. I'm weird about organization, so I didn't really like that idea. They say there are ways around that but some programs just don't like their data folders moved. May keep the program for sharing purposes when DH deploys. Not sure yet if /how that will work.

Windows Live Sync: Perhaps better for my situation. Files & folders stay where they are. You just step up a path from each folder you want to sync to the computers you want to sync. You can pick & chose better than you could in Dropbox. Just trying it out, I was able to sync my 2010 pictures so far, selected files & folders from My Docs and some other data I have that gets updated several times a week.

This morning, I downloaded my updated data from email to desktop, and viola.. it moved right over to the laptop instantly. NICE!!!! That alone makes me happy. Multiple files right there I don't need to deal with. :thumbsup2

I think I might enjoy my laptop more now that I don't have to constantly think, what will I need & is it up-to-date. :goodvibes
