Can anyone give me some pointers? Howl long does it take? Can you avoid large cities? Are there accommodations near the highways(we can get lost quite easily)? We are thinking about driving to Bangor after work and then leaving from there early in the AM.

Thanks

You will drive on I95 all the way into Florida. You go around Boston, thru Providence, thru (easy) New Haven, thru NYC (difficult)(time it right), thru Baltimore (easy) around DC, thru Richmond (easy) thru no other cities until you get to FL where you have to go thru Jacksonville (easy-if not rush time of 10 minutes or an accident) then to I-4 at Daytona to Orlando.
Look up Magellan on the internet for driving aids for safety and comfort.

We drive from Sackville, N.B. hauling a travel Trailer every year at Christmas. It takes us about two and a half days and we drive pretty hard. There are lots of motels along the route, signage is good. We have found all the major cities ( Boston , NYC, Washington, Baltimore, Richmond, Jacksonville, and Orlando) can have alot of traffic around morning and evening rush hours, well alot of traffic for Maritimers. Try to avoid these cities at rush hour if possible. THe drive is not all that bad, just take it easy and be safe. Have a great holiday.

you can easly avoide most the major cities the rte that i use from fredericton is 95 to just this side of Boston then 495 to I90 (Mass pike )(west toward Hartford )then I84 west to Scranton Pa then I81 South to Staunton Va then I64 east till Richmond VA then I95 south at Daytona take I4 to Orlando. driving time from Bangor would be aprox 27 hrs and there are lots of accommodations near the highways and lots of clean rest areas This rte is aprox 50 miles longer than the strait I95 rte but avoids NY ,DC ,and other citys and it is also very scenic .to help avoid getting lost I would get a triptic from CAA ( Joining is worth the money as you will save its cost in holtel discounts )

I've driven all the way on 95 and I have driven this route above. I MUCH preferred the route above.

As a side benefit, it also cuts off a lot of the tolls you will encounter on the 95.

Thanks for sharing tribus121.

I am driving from Halifax in July (first time) and I've got a trip plan mapped out but it is I95 all the way and I wanted to avoid the major traffic areas and your route sounds great.

Will definitely be adding this to my notes.

I am also driving down from Halifax in July(leaving on the 27 or 28) and have been debating on which way to go.We will try and drive straight down changing between 2 drivers.I also was going to go I-95 all the way, because ever trip route(Mapquest, google, and Live Local) I checked said that was the quickest.
After looking at many posts I will probable take the route above or the Tappen Zee bridge to the New Jersey Parkway to go around New York.Weekend traffic shouldn't be as bad as weekday traffic so New York is the only spot I am really worried about.Goog luck with whatever route you decide to take.
