We have been going to Disney for the past 15 yrs and flew there every time. This year we will be driving from NY. There will be 5 of us in a minivan. Kids are ages 1, 3, 9. Any advice on how we should handle it? Any tips that you may be able to give us? We have a TV in the car but what about any other activities? Should we stop over or go straight through? Or are we out of our minds ...and should just fly!!??!!

How many times do you think we'd stop for gas from NYC? Any advice would be great

:grouphug:

We're also going down in August with a 2, 4, and 11 year olds. We really thought of driving, but decided that we might not enjoy our two week vacation after two days in the car with kids. We booked our tickets in December and are paying $69 each way, pp. We have driven from Boston to Myrtle Beach on several occasions - 15 hours. We drive straight through on the way down and stop once on the way home in Washington and see the Zoo. Besides the TV in the car, I've always packed them bags with new toys, etc. I've also done it this year, new backpack from Lands End in the outlet section for $15 and they'll use them as soon as we get home for the start of school. For the older one, drawing type stuff, making hair beads, yes they'll probably be all over the place afterwords, school type books for pre-practice at going back to school, magnetic puzzles, new coloring books and crayons. The older one has always done great in the car as long as we've had the TV, and every video we practically own. I'd also start picking up video's now as they come out, but hold them until the trip.

Good Luck and maybe we'll see you there.

We have driven from NY many times.
Tried once to do the driving straight thru - wouldn't recommend it.
You'll need to stop for gas 3 or 4 times on the way down.
We usually get as far as S Carolina on night 1, and arrive at WDW by 4pm the next day.

You might want to post on the transportation board-there's a ton of "driving experts" there. :flower: We'll be driving from Maine, stopping in Jersey at my Mom's overnight and then going the rest of the way. Our plan is to leave NJ at about 3pm, drive until about 1am, sleep in a hotel for a few hours, then travel the rest of the way the next day which should get us at WDW at about 3 or 4pm-just in time for check in! Hopefully it won't be too painful of an experience, I'm trying to be positive about it. Last year we took the auto train in VA, so we had to drive to VA, then board the train and they take you to Sanford, florida which is about 45 min from WDW. The nice thing about that is that you have your car when you get there and your actual driving time is less than half. We're not doing it this time because we're on a tighter budget and my DH thinks we'll have more fun driving.......

When my kids were younger, I used to bring along several sets of colorforms. They loved sticking them to the van windows....kept them occupied for many hours!

We have a 1 year old & 3 year old & have taken a far drivng family vacation each year. 3 things:

1) Stop often-6-8 hours a day in the car is max unless they are sleeping. We break the longer trips up & it works like a dream.
2.) Trip fairy. I go to the dollar store & load up on special treats for the kids. Some are special treats they aren't usually allowed to have & then the rest are things to keep them busy. A new video, new crayons, new coloring books, so on & so forth.
3.) Portable vcr or dvd player. My kids don't watch a ton of tv on a daily basis, so it is a HUGE treat for them to have it on long trips. I load up at the library before our trip. Works like a charm! Don't tell the parenting police on my. ;)

I wouldn't recommend the staight through thing. I just think it's asking too much of the kids.

I think driving is fine. You will need to make frequent stops. Give yourselves planty of thime. Be prepared for a few melt-downs. The last time we did it, I was pregnant so I was probably the one who needed to stop the most. I also had a little difficulty hauling myself around to get stuff for the kids.

I bought little presents and wrapped them so every once in a while when things started getting ugly, I would let them pick a present out tof the bag. They loved that. Probably cost me $25 for 2 kids round trip. I love that dollar store!

We also found these tray table things with pockets (kind of ) on the side. I think we found them at ToysRUs, but that was a while ago. They were great! All the crayons, pencils, could stay right in those pockets and not all over the van.

Since there are 5 of you, a cartop carrier is a must for a van trip. Vans just don't have much room inside for suitcases, etc.

Have fun. Don't stress. I rather enjoyed our time together in the van.

Just a different perspective on driving straight through. We've done it about 4 times now and it's been great for us. We leave at around 6:00 pm and usually get there at around 10:30 am the next day. We stop twice for gas and we stop for breakfast. We did this last year when DDs were 3 1/2 and 5 months. The great thing about this is they sleep most of the way. Granted it's a little hard on the adults, but me and my DH have found that if we each get about 2 -3 hours of sleep on the way down, we're OK.

We just take it very easy the first day - hang out at the pool - that sort of thing. And we are usually in bed by around 7:00 pm that first night.

People think we're crazy, but it's always worked for us.

I might think about 16 hours, but not 24 which it would take us (or 22 that it would probably take the op)

We do the drive from NY every year. We have a 2 year old son and 7 year old daughter. We have done the drive all different times and ways! What works best for us is leaving our house at 4am. The kiddies stay asleep and usually won't wake up till 8:30-9am. So we get a couple hours driving while they are still asleep. I bring breakfast with us and we stop for the bathroom in the morning after eating breakfast. We make sure when we leave to have a full tank of gas. We only need to fill it up about 3 times along the way. We bring drinks and snacks in the car so that means less stops for that stuff. We stop for lunch and dinner and for bathroom breaks and maybe 3 other times to let the kids stretch and run around with a ball at some of the rest stops. It takes us 18 hours door to door and we are about 90 mins from NYC.

We like leaving at 4am because we don't like to drive at night. We get too tired, we find the drivers are crazy at night and we just feel safer not driving then. Also I feel better going to rest stops during daylight! Some have security, some do not. We do like to drive straight through because we just want to get there!! We have no problem doing so. DH and I take turns driving.

To keep the kids busy we have tvs. One screen in each headrest and one on the dash for the passenger! We have a DVD player and the DVD's are easier to store, they take up less room than tapes. DD has her Gameboy Advance SP so she has games for that and they also sell the cartidges with nick toons and other cartoons on them. DH and I have our own IPods. I bring colored pencils, activity books, crayons, coloring books, word searches, stickers and such for DD. Also, travel magna doodle, travel colorforms for both kids.

The kids are really good in the car and are use to the drive. DD takes alot of naps, and keeps busy with all her activities, she's happy just drawing!!LOL We usually save the movies for after dinner, and we bring long movies, like Harry Potter. DS is mesmerized by the TV.LOL!!! Also, I wrap up little presents for them. Things I pick up from the dollar store. Usually I surprise them with one in every new state.

A tip that really works with keeping DD from driving us cazy is this: We give her about $10 in singles for her spending money for the drive down. To get something at the rest stops, like a special snack and such. Everytime she acts up or is bad we take $1 away from her. You wouldn't believe how behaved she is!!!LOL We do this in the parks too!!

We drive every year because DH won't fly. We have it down to a science and really look foward to our trips. It is good family time too. We often just talk to eachother and clown around and have lots of laughs. We try to make it fun.

Another tip would be to bring with you for the drive your own travel toilet paper and seat covers. Charmin makes them and they sell them at Target and some super markets. Not all rest stops have those paper seat covers, or even toilet paper some times! I have my own and they are small and compact and fit right in y bag.

Let us know if you have any more questions!

Hi, not from NY but we drive from Ohio when we go - well we drive everywhere  and the one thing we do is our laptop which is also our dvd player but one thing We cant do without is HEADPHONES we found them at radioshack and they each have a volume control on the cord- the kids love them and we keep our sanity- they can also use them on their gameboys, lots of crayons and map they love to know where we are- we always drive thru the night and straight thru we are just excited to get their I think the last 2 times we have been someone always gets sick on the way down - never fails :rotfl: so this year stocking up on vitamins :rotfl2:
