We are planning on heading to SC and maybe staying at HH in early November. The drive, based on googlemaps, is about 12 hours. We wouldn't drive straight through. What is the best place to stop on the way to break up the drive? going from NJ

It depends on how long you would like to drive the first day. Unfortunately, once you get south of Richmond it is pretty rural along I-95. Richmond might be a bit too far North for you. I would just look at a map and pick a town that looks about halfway and see what hotels are available. You could always stay near South of the Border for a truly "historic" stay (by historic I mean a tourist trap that has not been updated since the 1950's).

We drove down and stopped in the late afternoon at the lewis ginter botanical gardens in richmond virginia. It was beautiful and the kids loved the splash pad. Then we drove about a while more and stopped in rocky mount, north carolina at a country inn and suites. They had a small indoor pool for night swimming and make your own waffles for breakfast.

We drove last summer from Northern Ocean County NJ. We left about 6:00am.

I did not want to get to to HHI at night and waste points, so we went as far as Florence, SC and then had about 2 plus hours the next day. We were well rested and ready for fun. Our villa was ready, we had lunch at the CS near pool and pier then we to the pool.

We had a great time...can not wait to get back.pixiedust:

As another poster said once you get below Richmond, there are long stretches of I 95 which are very rural and not much in the way of hotels. Actually, we've only made the drive from PA to FL once (we drove down with our son who was taking his car when he participated in the Disney College Program and then flew home) and I would be very hesitant to stay anywhere along I 95 in the Carolinas and Georgia again...we chose to stay in the Savannah area (exit for Savannah airport)thinking we would have a better choice (not) and would NOT do so again. We also plan to drive to HH, if not next year, definitely 2015 and will most likely plan the trip leaving PA mid-morning and stopping in the Richmond area early evening and then continuing to HH early the next morning simply to avoid having problems with not so well kept hotels along the I 95 corridor south of Richmond.

Best Western Executive Inn in Latta, SC is actually pretty nice. We've stayed there a few times, but it might be too far. It's not far from South of the Border.

We have done the drive several times over the years. My favorite spot to break up the trip to Hilton Head is Selma, North Carolina. Hands down a great spot to break up the trip. On the way home Fredericksburg Va.

We are driving to Vero from NW New Jersey next week. I am avoiding 95 and going through PA into Virginia via Blue Ridge Mountain way. Should be a different experience.

Sgtpet- different experience indeed. Hope you are familiar with the blue ridge parkway, and are aware that the speed limit is 45 mph on most of the road- except the sections where it is 35 or 25! That could be a long (but beautiful) drive...

Just make sure you arrive in day light if its your first trip. Arrived there after dark in rain our first trip it was a nightmare. Love the resort though.
