I'm looking into a trip for next year & what with the credit crunch, it's looking that driving to DLRP may be the cheapest option.

I only live about 25 mins from the port at Dover so that's not to bad, but I was wondering about the drive in France.

I've never driven on the continent so that's a slight concern but I'm willing to give it a go & I've got a satnav so she can tell me the way to go :D

Can anyone who has driven before give me a rough idea of what the costs would be for petrol & tolls, so that I can see if it's a worthwile option.

Hi. I drove in October and I'm driving again in December. I live about 35 miles from Dover too so it works out as an ok option.

Ok...so fuel costs, kinda difficult to work out to be honest with you. We have a 40 litre diesel tank on my car and it costs approx £45 to fill up. We used 3/4 of a tank on the way there and the same on the way back so it should be about £70. It's about 200 miles from door to door.

Tolls...on the way there they were 14 euros and on the way home they were 18 euros. It depends on what time of day and what day of the week but the most they are is 18 euros.

We drove in September and going again in December, little different for us as we live in Devon so we're about 6-7 hours away from the tunnel.

Total fuel costs for us (not diesel) was about £180 all round including driving in france. I had never driven in France before but found it extremely easy and far better than driving over here.

As for the tolls they were €18.90 each way for us.

I alway fill up at the Auchaun garage at the Val d'Europe shopping centre, its about 5 minutes away from Disney & it is usually the cheapest. France tends to be cheaper for fuel, more so on the diesel then the petrol but even then I have found it to be cheaper as they tax less on their fuel. However I haven't been since the price has come down here so i'm unsure of what the cost is like now.

Tolls may go up next year but not by much if previous years are to go by.

Make sure your Satnav has european maps as some don't. If not you can find a route planner online for free & they are just as good.

Oh and try having a lookt at Ferrys for you ferry. Usually get the return for £43 and the ferrys are really quiet and really nicely decorated.
