So we've finally decided to do the drive this time around. The flights are just too pricey for dh to handle!;)
We've driven before - but usually it's spring or summer so we don't need to worry about snow and ice. I'm concerned about the treck through the mountains in West Virginia - although the rest of the trip may be fine.
For those of you who have done the drive in the winter...which way do you prefer? Thoughts?
Mapquest shows only a 2 hour difference between the 2 routes so we'll go with the safer route...

I have driven down twice, once in 1973 with a group of teens and again in 1980. Both times we hit a snow storm , once in Ohio and the other time in Tennessee. Both of these times we took I-75 as it seems to be the most direct route. We flew out of Detriot last year (Dec 19-29'th) for $325/person, taxes included. The same flights from Toronto were almost $800/person. Have fun but beware, after expeirencing Disney at Christmastime, you will want to do it every year.

It may be highly addictive if your signature is any indication!! Wow!
We'll be a VWL on this trip too! I can't wait to see all the decorations...

We are driving down at Christmas as well, and were debating the two options. WE have always taken 75, but like you, never in the winter. Based on advice from here, and others, I think we are going to stick with I-75 unless the weather looks significantly better for I-77.

We always drive down to Florida. We have taken both routes. Both routes we have run into snow storms. As long as you have good snow tires on your car, and use some smarts, you will do fine either route.
I start watching the weather about a week ahead of departure. We have never delayed leaving, but we left 12 hours earlier once (I-75 route) due to a storm in the Detroit area.

Both Dec. trips in the last few years we hit snowstorms in the mountains on the way home (mid month). I am wondering if they own a snowplow down there, never saw one but I have a 4x4 and love driving in the snow. So I'd say it is all up to you and your comfort level, I don't mind the I-77 route but the snow sure does slow you down.
