Just a word of advice for you folks driving through TN :moped: over the next 2-3 weeks. The State Troopers ::cop: seem to be on a "speeding ticket" campaign and will be out in FULL FORCE. They have been ordered to write many, many tickets so be careful.

For those of you driving through Knoxville... be aware that the speed limit changes to 65 mph within about 20-30 miles (or maybe more) of Knoxville and 55 mph as you get closer.

Hope this saves someone a ticket.... that would not be a fun start or finish to your vacation! :sad2:

GA has the 100 days of summer campaign going on. Now in Atlanta I don't think that makes much difference, but my brother got a ticket near Valdosta so watch out.

(And for those of you coming over from Birmingham... Alabama has budgeted for EXTRA patrol cars on I-20 to the GA line. They KNOW those Atlanta drivers (like me) are used to going as fast as we can.......so they are looking for us. Easy money!

That's so true. DH got a ticket just outside Knoxville when we were returning from NC about 2.5 weeks ago!

Yep, right around Pell City on I-20 I got dinged once 83 in a 70 and I wasn't passing anyone, just going with the flow.

By the way, is I-20 between B'ham and the state line still like driving on a washboard, or is that about fixed????

Havn't been on that hwy since January, but will be driving it in December.

Pretty much still a washboard... Some of it has been fixed, but most of it's still BOUNCE, BOUNCE, BOUNCE. The first time I drove it I thought I had a flat tire! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Right now the worst part is just on the other side of the GA line. Major road construction. For months it's been horrible going to Atlanta. The last two weeks that was fine, but it's horrible going to Birmingham (one lane for several miles)

Yeah, they are always out in Pell City!

Thanks for the heads-up. We'll be driving to Knoxville, actually, just a few days after that.

Oh, joy. Well, at least I won't be on it during rush hour. Plan to be hitting I-65 South by 5:30pm CST, so that should put me on I-20 by 7:00 pm CST, then running through Atlanta, by 10pm EST.

I've got to go to Jacksonville, AL on Monday. I have avoided 431 from Huntsville to I-20 for years. If it seems like an improvement, I may try that this December.

I suggest checking GAnavigator.com before you go.

If it's a weekend right now hitting I-20 into Atlanta is a NIGHTMARE. I make sure to get home before 9 PM on Friday......

Most of I-75/40 through Knoxville is under construction and the speed limit through there is 45mph and is sometimes checked by troopers dressed as construction workers. There is a trooper base just off the interstate at the West Hills exit, the heart of the construction, and I think they take it very personally to keep the workers safe, so slow down and be carefull. Radio stations 107.7 and 97.5 have good traffic reports and will let you know if there are any problems or if things are just slow.

clkelley,

From Madison, you could avoid I-20 by going out 72 to HWY 35 in Scottsboro and take it east across the river and turn left immediately after the river on HWY 40 to 117 (changes right about where you cross I-59) - Continue to Summerville, GA and take US 27 to Armuchee. Take 140 to Adairsville where you pick up I-75

2:30 to I75 and about 30-35 minutes to get to Downtown Atlanta.

I did US231 to US 278 to I75 south of Atlanta a couple of years ago. It was a pretty easy drive. 278 crosses I20 at exit 44 just outside the 285 loop.

Going to Birmingham and then to ATL seems a long way to go.

Unless we get plane tickets we will be on the road October 5th from Monrovia on our way down for fall break.

Phil

An update on how serious they are in TN. They are trying to raise $8 MILLION during the month of August. Gee, I might try walking to work this month! :cool1:

Although it's true that some cities - Nashville, where I live, in particular - have cracked down on speeders - this is an urban myth that has popped up in e-mail here. Troopers have not been "ordered" to write many tickets.

Please drive safely through your vacation, and remember that while it may be just another city to get through as quickly as possible, it is home to us.

Yeah, someone forwarded me that email, because I'm going to Lebanon net week, and will be spending a good deal of time between Wilson and Davidson counties. The only city in the area I worry about getting stopped for almost nothing is Lakewood, near Old Hickory.

Well, actually a State Trooper showed my husband the directive so I would take it seriously and it has been on the radio/news around Knoxville so I wouldn't dismiss it.

It's not an "urban" myth.

It's a Summer thing. (I have a buddy in the TN Highway Patrol) They do this every summer along with the seatbelt watch....

(Nashville is like Atlanta, you aren't going to see it there. When you head east and get closs to Cookville, SLOW DOWN!)

Yes, it IS an urban myth. Query Snopes.com with the words "traffic ticket Tennessee." There you'll see permutations of the traffic ticket frenzy e-mail which is almost identical in phrasing as the warning.

As I said in my first post, some areas are cracking down on speeders. It's not the same thing as trying to raise money by writing speeding tickets. Take Nashville, for instance. If you try to blow through here doing 80 in a 65, you may find yourself with blue lights behind you.
