It was my first time driving such a long distance: from Eastern Ontario to Orlando. I decided to take the 81, 66, 17, 95 route to avoid the mountains on the 77 and to bypass the bigger cities on the 95. We left mid-December and returned in January.

We left Friday night around 9:00 pm and drove till 2:00 am staying in Scranton, PA. On Saturday I drove to Wilson, NC (8 hours of driving plus 2 hours of breaks). From Wilson it took around 12 hours to get to Kissimee (including about 2 hours of breaks).

On the way back we left on Friday morning from Kissimmee to Wilson, NC (about 12 hours with breaks) and then on Sunday I drove 16 hours to arrive home at 2:00 a.m. There was heavy fog for about an hour around Wilkes-Barre in northern PA. We arrived last weekend and I didn't encounter any snow during the drive home.

My toddlers did really well and were entertained by new toys, singing, and taking breaks every 2-3 hours. My teen watched movies on the portable DVD.

The only thing I was disappointed in was the rest areas in northern NY. Though the signs indicated they were staffed by state police, there were none during the late hours (9:00 pm and later). The buildings were empty and I didn't feel very safe using the restrooms.

The drive was definitely part of the vacation experience and I loved having my own car and not relying on Disney transportation. I've traveled to Orlando by flying, greyhound bus, Amtrak and charter bus. I prefer driving by far and look forward to making the trip again next year.

That is a long drive. Friends are driving down in March. Will pass on the information to them! Thanks. Deb:)

Thanks for the summary Sandy. We'll be driving down next spring and you make it sound like a good plan!

Thanks for the report! I was asking about this exact route a while ago. We may be driving that way in April.

We'll be driving this Friday... planning on a 3 day trip since the little guy is making his first major drive at almost 2 years of age. Leaving Toronto area at 5 AM, crossing at Buffalo and taking the 90 towards that 77/79/19 route. Plan on stopping in WV, Georgia, and then to Vero Beach. If I mapped it right is should be about 8 hours on the road a day + stops. Looking forward to the mountains and seeing the sights... I hope the fog and weather are good.

We also take the 81, 66, 17, 95 route from Ottawa every year and it works well. We used to hit the I-95 earlier but you can get really bogged down in Baltimore and Washington, even using the ring roads. We thought that it would be easy traveling during th night but I don't think they ever sleep! The traffic was still heavy.

Sandy,
I loved your report! And it made me think of "Jon and Kate plus 8", did you see the one where they drive to WDW?
Thanks again for the info,
Daisy

Thanks for the info.! We'll be driving down for the first time this summer so it's good to be "in the know"!:goodvibes

The other similiar route is 81-77-26-95. It is the route we usually took when living in Ottawa Valley. I know people that take both routes. I find the route getting on #95 earlier has more traffic.
