Driving on your state expressway or interstate

On the interstates and toll roads in and around Chicago? You'd better do at least 10 over or you'll get run down by other drivers (by little ol' ladies no less! ). The limit is 55 but most do at least 65 in the right lane with 70-75 in the middle lane and the left lanes are for NASCAR wanna be's. Cops won't pull you over unless you do more than 65 (and I was told that by my friend that works for the State Police!).

ETA: The one exception is for contruction zones, limits are stictly enforced when workers are present, fines start at $375. We've had a few workers killed the past few years and they started to crack down, as well they should.

I grew up driving those roads and it is SCARY. You'll get nailed if you aren't going 70 and the speed limit is 55. My mom actually got a ticket on the Dan Ryan for going BELOW the speed limit, so the cops want you to keep up with traffic.

In TX, I found most would go the speed limit BUT even on the little highway outside our house the speed limit was 70.

Here in FL people go maybe 10 over on average. Limits are set at 55.

I thought the speedlimit on the interstate was 70 in FL. :confused3 I found on 95 they average about 75-85.

I'm in Hawaii, let me tell you...it's NOTHING like the mainland!! I think the highest speedlimit sign in the whole state is 55, maybe 50? And that's on our "interstate" we well. A few people speed but in general, they go under the speed limit here, especially on the side streets.

I4 is 55. I don't think I've seen it at 65. Nor do I ever recall a 70. I don't drive 95 a lot. Maybe 1-2 times a year. I haven't driven 75 or 10 since coming here from TX and I was amazed how slow people were driving.

I always drive exactly what the posted speed limit is - because (B) it's the law and therefore I am obligated to abide by it..
So you never, ever break the law??
;)

As far as the left lane being for passing, I have always heard that but nobody around here uses it that way. The left lane is used as just another lane to drive in.

I was driving in the center lane the other night and a girl pulled in front of me, slammed on her brakes, and proceeded to spray her wiper fluid off and on for the next several miles. I passed her a little while later and then she passed me again and did the same thing. I think I made her more angry because I laughed at her as she drove past me. I thought it was funny that she kept spraying her wiper fluid as if it would bother me. I didn't know what her problem was, then I noticed a few cars ahead of me there was a car exactly like mine so I'm guessing that lady must have done something to irritate her.

Florida's Turnpike is 70mph, and I am certain that there are 65 and 70mph sections of I-4 outside of Orlando and on I-10, I-95, and I-75

Most interstates/expressways have a "minimum" posted as well.. 55 is the speed limit on the interstate here - with a "minimum" of 40.. However, if weather conditions were poor, the minimum would not be enforced and if you were involved in an accident you would receive a ticket for driving "too fast for road conditions"..

Police don't expect you to "keep up with the traffic" - they expect you to drive the posted speed limit - or the posted minimum..

I be thinking the east coast states are missing an incredible revenue opportunity!

Here, 5 MPH over is acceptable, we have 1 highway and 1 interstate, they are both 65 MPH. Some think that 10 MPH is okay, it usually is as long as the guy next to you has California plates:lmao: Except in school zones - the posted limit is 15 - don't even think about doing 16:eek:

I forgot to add - I generally am 5 MPH over on the highway, I tend to be close to or at the posted limit on streets and expressways.

Now, I don't live there, but I visit often - Portland, Oregon. Is it just my imagination or do you folks generally all drive the posted limits at least on the highways? I drove from Portland out to the coast twice recently and the majority of the way was 55 :headache: and darn it, everyone was doing 55.

I am absolutely shocked that the traffic is actually moving fast enough for you to get even close to the speed limit. Are you in urban areas?

I seem to always be stuck in traffic that is moving 25 miles an hour - not even that fast when I lived in Houston.

I'd love to have the opportunity to speed on I4 in Orlando! It seems to be slow 24 hours a day.

And they are now using photo enforcement in Illinois in construction zones. Smile your on candid camera.
I guess the backlog is huge. I talked to someone who got his ticket in the mail six months later. He said when you got to court you were brought in in groups, told there will not be any plea bargains and the next time you lose your license

i'm sure most of you have driven i4. most of those drivers are nuts. going 75-80 mph in a 60-65 zone is the norm. i keep up with the flow of traffic, attempting to do the speed limit when i can, but sometimes that results in, what i think, is a more dangerous situation because then you have people trying to get around you every which way. however there have been lots of motorcycle cops sitting under the over passes from conroy rd. to the attractions, so most people will slow it down a bit there.

now the turnpike :scared1: :rotfl: woahhh. after yeehaw junction, there is basically nothing out there except you, the road, and maybe some cows. i've seen people routinely doing 90+. i know this because i'm doing 90 and they're passing me ;) when the road is clear and its nice out, i don't have a problem doing that speed because i hate how desolate the turnpike is, they don't even have street lights on some parts, and i want to get where i'm going quick.

Wow! I can't believe you mentioned Yeehaw Junction! When I went to visit my sis in Florida (north of Orlando) we were going down to see my brother in Vero Beach.. At some point we got off of the main road and took some "back road" through Yeehaw Junction and I was scared out of my ever lovin' mind.. You are absolutely correct when you say there is NOTHING out there - and I have never seen dark SOOOOO dark.. My sister was driving along and a guy jumped out of a ditch - no shirt or shoes on - just jeans - trying to flag us down.. Of course my sister didn't stop - and that's when I figured out my heart must be in pretty good shape if that man jumping out into the middle of the road like that didn't send me into cardiac arrest..:lmao:
