Driving on the 91 to Disneyland

Here's a question for one of the locals on this board. I've read the warnings in other threads about taking the 91 to Disneyland from the East (we're coming from Phoenix, AZ). However, I'm assuming that's mainly a week day warning. We should be fine taking the 91 on a Sunday afternoon, right?

Thanks,
Jeff

When we are going to Disneyland from Phoenix we always take the 91 there and back. We always leave and arrive on a weekday. We never had any problems other than normal traffic that you would expect during rush hour.

I'm from Phoenix too and we always take the 91 into Disneyland. Never have any major trouble except for typical rush hour traffic in the afternoon time. Usually that's not a problem as it's most often late at night.

Traffic can back up with everyone coming back from Vegas... You're better off coming in Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning.

Thanks for the info everybody. We'll be leaving Phoenix at 8:00 am (7:00 am CA time), so we'll probably be hitting the 10/60 split around 1:00pm CA time. Hopefully we'll be ahead of the LV traffic.

Last year we drove from Tucson via 10,60,91 to the 57. The only heavy traffic was the 91 to 57 transtion, constrution going on. First time too. Usaully come thru San diego. I know longer(45 min to an hour) and further (15 miles). I think the construction was a new interchange. :thumbsup2

I HATE the 91 passionately as I have spent many hours stuck on it. There is always an accident and the rush hour is horrendous. That being said, a Sunday early afternoon, or even late afternoon, should really not cause much of a problem. You should motor on through pretty easy.

:moped:

part of the 91 is carpool lane until it gets past Green River Road then it becomes Fast Trak (transponder only). the 91 is unbearable during weekday rush hour.

OK, we drove in today. I had decided to give the 91 a try, but never made it onto that freeway. The 60 was very crowded between the 10 and the 91. It was slow and go from approaching the 215, then the right two lanes were at a stand-still for like a mile approaching 91. I gave up on that route and stayed left on the 60. Once we got past the 91, it was smooth sailing over to the 57, then down to Disneyland.

I don't know what the 10 was like, but if I were making the drive again next weekend, I'd probably try just sticking with the 10 and then taking 57 down.

Jeff

[Edit] We hit the 60 around 2:00 PM CA time on Sunday.

Glad to hear that you made it there safely and without too much trouble. Enjoy your time at the park!

Thanks...will do. We got off to a good start. We had the first 4 tickets for the 9:00pm Fantasmic Desert Buffet, so we were seated first, and in the first row. This is an AWESOME way to see Fantasmic. Not that I would spend that kind of money for it on a regular basis, but it was fun to do this once.

Well, my post will be pretty pointless since you're already there, but the 60/91/215 interchange is BAD. Whoever designed that interchange must've been crazy. Going west, you get onto the 91 BEFORE the cars on the 91 merge into the lane going east on the 60. Should've been the other way around. In case you didn't notice while passing it, they're doing road construction to improve it though. Getting onto the 91 from the 60 is always a hassle, but many times traffic speeds when you actually get on the 91 (unless its rush hour). I haven't had to drive the 91 in awhile, but months ago, there were numerous nights when they'd actually close the 91 east -> 60 east ramp at night time, which caused for a detour + headache on my way home.

I am not familiar with the area and I am not sure if you meant it was bad further out from Disney. We are staying at the Embassy Suites North and had planned on taking the 91 W towards Disneyland - is this NOT a good idea? :confused3

The 91 is "bad" most any weekday from 7am-10am and 3pm-7pm. I would avoid it at all costs. The other freeways that go in the same direction but are a little further north are the 60 and then the 10. I dont travel much on the 60 so I am not sure if there is a car pool lane. The 10 does after a ways, but not the entire way. The 91 has a toll lane instead. If you are coming from the north via the 15 go west on the 210 instead and it will be much, much faster. You would take any of these freeways to the 57 S. The 57/60 interchange is confusing and you do NOT want to be in the carpool lane for this one.

None of these are ideal however, so if at ALL possible, try to travel at a non-peak time. :teeth:

Hi, for everyone who is planning on driving the 91 to Disneyland in the near future, just a heads up for ya. The 91/215/60, is very chaotic and crowded right now. Pretty much any time of day. They are building a new transition for the 91/60 interchange. In January I was trying to get on the 91 from the 60 and it took 35 minutes just to get over in the right lane and that was 2:00 pm. P.S. I live near Palm Springs so I take the 10, to the 215, to the 91.
