I got a letter from the DVLA this morning saying that my current license picture is due to expire in October - 10 years since I passed my test, they want a new picture sent in and they want to chage me £17.50 in administration costs for the pleasure of doing so! The passport photo will be an additional £3-4 too!

I think this is disgusting, obviously I have no choice but to do so - once again the motorist ends up paying out.

Vent over!
;)

Ah, that's a shame. My experience with DVLA was bril. I was expecting to pay £17.50 for my new card type licence but I wasn't charged a penny because there was also a change of address.

Just moving this to the Community Board.

I just renewed my liscence and agree that it is terrible having to pay £17.50. Also my new photo is horrible, I look far too serious!!!! :)

I have this pleasure next year, or sooner if I finally get the job with the ambulance service.

One of the reasons why I still only have my paper licence.

Do all photo driving license photos expire after 10 years? There is nothing on mine that gives an expiry date or anything.

DW has still got a paper license.

Tim I'm not sure - I don't remember seeing an expiry date on it, DH still has a paper license and it's the most raggedy peice of paper you have ever seen! I wasn't given the option of one of those when I passed my test though it was just the photocard one.

Alan, thanks for moving this over here - I noticed that I had posted it in the wrong forum straight after I posted it!

The expiry date is on the front - mine is up next year. You have 1. surname, 2. first name, 3. DOB, 4a. the date this license was issued, than 4b. the date it will expire, followed by 5. your license number.

:thumbsup2

So the paper ones don't expire but the plastic ones do??? :confused3

Presumably because they have photos on! If you were given one at the age of 17 that lasts until you are 70 then you wouldn't really look much like the photo. ;)

I don't agree with the cost of replacing them - £17 is a bit steep - but i can see the sense in them only being valid for 10 years...it's the same with passports.

My dad still has a paper licence & its not in bad nick considering how long he has had it for.

I unfortunately had no choice & I passed my test after the photo card was introduced.

What a cheek :headache: I just had a look at mine and it will expire in 2011 - I think the paper ones expire when you are 70 or something :)

Not as steep as renewing your passports though :scared1:

I look like Myra Hindley on my driving licence :lmao:
if you need to renew it or replace the paper one for the new one, you can do it online and they will use your passport photo for this

Just checked mine and it expires in November, I had no idea they only lasted 10 years!!! Oh well thats another thing to sort out:)

Oh yeah! Hadn't thought of that!!!

I can see the reasoning behind it but the cost is rather steep isn't it!

Netty - If they use your passport photo for it do you still have to pay?

My paper one (raggedy old thing) expires the day before my 70th birthday (which IS still years away, I'll have you know!). I just have to make sure I don't change address in the meantime.

I hung onto mine until we moved a couple of years ago. I didn't notice it was only 10 years for this new fangled version either!
