I REALLY need to start learning to drive so I've been checking out the schools online. The only one that will give me a price per lesson their site is AA and they want to charge me £24 per hour. :scared1: I know some of you have been learning recently (or have kids who have been), can you tell me if this is average or overly expensive? We'd been expecting around £14 so this seems a lot!

The average is usually around £21/£22 an hour. My friend is an instructor with Red driving and they charge £21 an hour. It was £16 an ahour when I learnt to drive over 10 years ago.

£24 sounds about right as when I learnt 16 years ago it was £12 an hour at student rates.

Claire ;)

I went with AA - if you block book they charge less (or at least they used too)

All the ones in My area were about £20 per hour. I block booked with AA and got it for £22 per hour. I was really impressed with the AA - i always had a newish car - clean! Unlike some of the others i saw!

My instructor charges £25 a lesson.. It sounds right although I have heard that some do it for less.

Don't give up. :) You might just find it. :goodvibes

My son learnt to drive last year. We paid £150 for a block of ten lessons, then it was £16 a lesson so yes to me the price you are quoting seems a bit steep.

DD was paying £160 for block of 10 hours, but I think that was a bit cheaper than some of the larger driving schools around here. I think BSM, for example, are nearer the £20 mark.

Well I've spoken to BSM too now. They charge £23.25 per lesson if I book individually. However they offered me what they called a starter package. It includes 25 hours on the road, my practical test, both theory tests, copies of books (highway code, theory test guide) and a CD with a Hazard Perception test on it. That was £641.89 all in - which sounds very good. Especially as if I fail my practical, they'll give me a second test free.

I learned with BSM 5 years ago :)

I booked a 3 month course which cost around £650 if I remember rightly.
My instructor was great and I managed to pass my test first time :thumbsup2

What about getting the initial lessons with an instructor and then getting a very close relative or partner to help you. After I failed my first test my dad took me out to get in some practice as I really needed to get a feel for the road and not just instructions. However that was over 20 years ago and the roads were quieter (and had to watch out for the horse and carts!)

Good luck

Susan

I learnt with the BSM when I was 17. After I passed I got 2 hours of motorway lessons as well. Really professional and I had a fantastic instructor. Sounds like a great package.

I am planing lessons soon as DBF said when I pass I can have his Golf when it is two years old, it is 6 months old at the moment so I have 18 months to learn. I think the price is about right, though if you look around and book in blocks you could get about £18 per lesson, my mum booked this for my sister for her Christmas present, it was with some one local. though as she is at the age where all her friends are learning to drive she had recommendations.

My ex husband was an ADI, he charged £14 an hour but that was about 8 years ago so it sounds about right

The BSM deal sounds good. I would also recommend a motorway lesson once you've passed as it's great for the confidence.

Good luck :thumbsup2

I'm planning on taking the Pass Plus course after getting my license, that includes motorway lessons, night driving and other things too. It also helps reduce your insurance premiums by as much as effectively giving you a years no claims - something that will be very helpful as my premiums will be sky high initially.
