Driving is...

Driving is easy
my dad was all "I'm going to yell at you, mosly 'STOP' but i'ts ok, it's all love and safety"

he hasn't had to yeall once, not even stop

I was fine on the actual driving in a straight line part. (Only, I needed to watch my speeding a bit. ) But when it was the turns, the car was all over the place. I'd drift into the left, try to get in the right, and end up on the right shoulder. The only time I made a semi decent turn was into a driveway, which was not my own. I used blinkers, looked in the mirrors (almost had a freakout when I saw someone behind me), and was able to brake slowly.
Braking slowly is important. Also, this is weird, but how many feet do you drive with? I drive with two, and if you do too, you need to make sure your foot is off the brake whenever you're accelerating, and the other way around. If you drive with one foot, all I can say is...I hope your reflexes are good!

Turning will get easier! Soon, driving will be like walking to you. It'll be so easy, you will wonder how you ever thought otherwise. :)

Yeah, my dad got a little anxious at first. Now he appreciates when I drive him around, resting time! Lol.

you will eventually get to a point where you know what different speeds feel like. i know that sounds crazy, but 30 feels different than 40, and 40 feels different than 50. you'll be more confident about not speeding then.

also, its usually pretty safe to go 5-9 mph over, depending on the area.

driving with two feet is bad unless you're driving a manual. a lot of times, if you get scared, you could accidentally kill your engine by pushing the brake and gas at the same time. it is bad bad bad to drive with two feet. always use one foot.

If you have your seat up too high, would that make it easier to press the gas? I find that it's really, really easy to press the gas and go over the limit, and idk if that's because my legs are all squished up or if the gas pedal is supposed to be that loose and easy to press.

I drive with one foot, and both my parents cars are automatics. I find the mini van to be hard and my dad's small car is all banged up. I would love a small car, but there is noooooooo way we could afford one anytime soon.

I usually sit up...but I feel like the farther I sit back the slower I go. Its kind of a feel thing with me.

the gas is always really easy to press, for me. lol. try scooting your seat back a little bit if you feel cramped.

Don't worry, my turns sucked when I first started driving too. Don't let it discourage you from driving though because you'll need to pratice.

Oh, be careful of turning at lights and stuff. I was turning into a parking lot and I had the green arrow to go and the opposing traffic had a yellow light. Well some guy decided to pass the guy in front of him and blow through the light. haha that might have sounded confusing I just can't think of how to explain it.

Good luck :]

when i first got into the car (my partner made me go first:scared1:) my teacher asked if i'd driven yet. i said a little and he right away had me turn into a church parking lot that had a lot of "obstacles". he basically had me do figure eights and such in the parking lot to see how well i could handle turns. he pointed out that i had a problem with turning the wheel too far with only one hand; be sure to use that hand over hand thing; it's a lot better when learning. he also pointed out that i do the "granny slide" when coming out of a turn. that's letting the wheel slide under your fingers back into place. DO NOT "GRANNY SLIDE". it's very dangerous, you can lose control very easily if you don't have a grip on the wheel. so do the hand over hand in reverse to get the wheel straight.

another thing that helped me get my turns down is to go to a parking lot (empty!! :thumbsup2) with my mom that had medians and practice turns in both directions. it will help you get a little better feeling on turning into your own lane. and after i had the turns down pretty well my mom let me just drive and turn at my own will (safely of course )... this gave me a better understanding of how to control the car at different speeds. your teacher probably isn't going to let you drive "willy-nilly" as my mom says :)

thats all i have for now... oh yeah, just relax with whoever is teaching you. try striking up a conversation when they aren't directing you. it will probably calm you both down. and it does get easier :) good luck

Actually, I asked my driving instructor about it and he said it was fine, if that's what I felt comfortable with. I just don't feel like my foot reflexes are good enough to drive with one foot. I've tried it, lots, but it was very uncomfortable and I felt out of control.

Thanks for the advice, but I think I'll keep driving how I feel is right for me. :)

Interesting, I've never heard of the 'granny slide'. I'll have to pay attention next time and see if I let go of the wheel after I turn. I'm pretty sure I just turn the wheel back to it's proper place, but now I'm really curious, haha.

Right now I'm just learning with my parents, but if it keeps up (IE the yelling when I'm not doing something right), I'm def going into Drivers Ed. Which, will more than likely happen at this rate. My tutor has a Drivers Ed School, and she's really good and I totally trust her so I'd be going to her.

my biggest fear with driving with both feet would be that i would get scared and then like push both feet down (the way you slam on the break? like i'd slam the break AND the gas)

and you know, i've only been told that its GOOD to let the wheel correct itself, since thats what its made to do.:confused3

It's normal for parents to yell, lol. They're very nervous, feeling very out of control, and kind of sad to see you growing up all at one time. Heck, my dad yelled at me once for not starting to slow down for a red light, when I swear, I was over a block from the darn thing.

DE teachers are trained for that kind of stuff, I think they'd be more calm...but not have that personal touch that your parents would have. I think it was kind of fun to have my dad teach me; we bonded.

I just asked my dad about it, and he agrees with you. He says that's what he does and turning is so much more smooth. Hm...

Oh, and it's really easy for me to just slam on the brake, since I've been driving so long with both feet. I've had to slam on the break a few times (stupid idiot people who think they can turn right when I'm 10 feet from them) and my brake foot just automatically goes down.

that makes sense, but i was generally talking about people with little experience driving with one or two feet for that matter. ;)

i only drive with 2 feet if im on a hill and someone parked too close behind me. i also use the hand-brake in those situations so i don't roll back and hit them.

as for advice, only accelerate with your big toe. it makes it easier to control the speed. and you drift towards whatever you look at. so if you look at other cars, you are more likely to drift towards them. my uncle is a driving instructor and he told me both tips.

Hmm, I love the granny slide lol
If I adjust the seat to close, I get muscle cramps, ugh. So be sure to adjust it as comfortable as you can.

Just don't give up! Practice makes perfect!

And has for relaxing, I waited a year to get my license from the day that I got my permit and that also came with time. I have been driving for more than a year now, and it is so much easier. I love driving by myself!

Oh, first let me tell you that I was absolutely petrified over driving!! It took me a long time to get used to making left turns and driving at night. Those were the 2 things that scared me the most. Now I'm fine.

But, for me the best thing I did was to face my fears. You can't get good at driving if you don't practice. And I think you have a whole year from when you get your permit to your license if you so choose (you can do that here).

But like I said practice practice practice! Drive to school, the grocery store, the mall, ect. If your mom or dad has to run errands you do the driving! Its a great way to learn to back out, park, turn, ect.

Hang in there! KUP on how your doing! :)

:goodvibes I understand.

Yeah, that's another big thing for me. If my seat is too close my leg starts hurting and getting tired really quickly! So make sure you adjust the seat, even though it annoys the person whose car your driving. ;)

Oh, I have to adjust the seat either way, I can't reach the pedals! My parents are 5'11 and 5'10 respectively, and I am never going to be that tall!
