Hi , Me again ! We are flying to Sanford airport and just wondered what the drive was like from Sanford to WDW . As after the flight not sure how my DH will be with the driving . So any tips for us just in general anything you can think of that will make it easier for us . Wanted to call at a Walmart or something for a few bit too , anyone recommend one on the way . How do you all find the whole car hire / driving . Also how long does it take from WDW to US and Discovery cove . Thanks guys : )

The driving is easy, the roads are nice and wide and don't have all the clutter that we have. No signs telling you Craft Town ahead or housing development this way! I have only done Orlando International but I believe it is about 40 mins Sanford to Disney area. From Downtown Disney it is around 15 mins to Universal / Seaworld area. It fires you up the freeway but is reasonably straightforward. There is a very good map that they give you in the car hire place in Disney as the roads there can be a bit confusing to start with. Other than that, take a SatNav, mine has been worth its weight in gold. I bought mine here and loaded US maps to it, it cost me less than one weeks rental of a SatNav from the hire car company and will now be using it for a third year.

You should be able to find a Walmart on the way down but if you are too tired the nearest proper Supermarket to Disney is at the Crossroads mall, 5 mins from DTD. Another 5 mins near Premium Outlets is a bigger nicer Publix.

The first thing I would say is that there really is nothing to fear driving in the US. It is actually a lot easier than the narrow roads here! I totally understand that it can feel a little scary because before I drove for the first time, I was apprehensive too (I was only 18 at the time, I'm 40 now) but it really isn't as bad as you imagine.

I've done the drive from Sanford a few times, it's very straightforward and it is well sign posted. Most of the car hire companies will give you a map and instructions when you pick up the car.

The issue on travel day is that you are often tired from a long day travelling, so I always recommend that drivers avoid all alcohol on the plane and try to get a coke or coffee just before you land to perk you up a bit!

There are few things that I always try to make people aware of that can cause minor hiccups for drivers who have not driven before.

1. The camber of the road is the opposite to the UK. When we drive in the UK we kinda automate our steering to account for the camber in the road. Because it is the opposite in the US (and you tend to account for the camber you're used to) you can tend to find yourself drifting to the side a bit. Use two hands and drive like you just passed your test!

2. Inside lanes that vanish off the expressway! You often find that the "slow lane" can disappear and become a turn off lane. If I had a buck for every tourist I saw frantically swinging off of a turn lane they didn't want to take, I'd have enough money to pay for my Mickey Waffles and Dole whips for a year! Pay attention to the signs (which are in the air above the lanes) or stick to the middle lane on the express ways.

3. Traffic lights are up in the air. Keep your eyes up!

4. Turning on Red... unless it is signposted otherwise, you can turn right on red if the road is clear.

5. Don't overtake a school bus!

6. Pay attention to being on the appropriate side of the road in confined spaces, small quiet roads and parking lots particularly. This tends to be when people forget!

7. Yield signs, Stop signs or solid white lines at a junction mean STOP, not rolling stop, not there is nothing coming so I can just go!

He'll be absolutely fine, it's not as bad as he might think! :thumbsup2

Hiya me romance great advise thanks. Ill note them down.

I don't get the school bus one ?

I'm not driving from airport as its my first time and also transfers are included.
I want a small 4x4 so I fell higher up to see things better. Pick up from car car centre or dolphin.

Not going for say nav. Would you advise I buy a map or would be ok with the free map !

I'm going SW, US, DC, and BG.

Personally, I wouldn't go for a 4 x 4, mainly because of the cost of gas but if it makes you feel more confident, then it's not a bad thing.

The free map is fine. SW, US, DC are all really well sign posted. I wouldn't pay out for a map. I can't remember how well BG is sign posted haven't been since '08.

The school bus thing is a BIG issue that a lot of people aren't aware of. If it is slowing or stopped and you overtake, it's an offence. The thought process I guess is the risk to the kids if they're standing to get off or trying to cross the road behind or in front of the bus.

We always get a SUV or people carrier - yes they take more gas but its so cheap it is a complete non-issue for me. I love the driving position and the comfort it offers us. Most often we get the 7 seat mini-van and there is only 3 of us!

I would recommend this Map - its not very expensive but it has all the major tourist attractions and restaurants marked for the Theme park area.

BG is simple to get to - just take the I4 west towards Tampa and then it will be sign posted once you get closer in.

I wouldn't be too worried about the school bus thing either - in all our trips I have never seen one (except the rows of parked ones you fly over on final approach in to MCO) and it is unlikely were you will be driving to see one.

7. Yield signs, Stop signs or solid white lines at a junction mean STOP, not rolling stop, not there is nothing coming so I can just go!

Just noticed this - Yield signs do not mean you have to stop - they are similar to our give way. If the road is clear you can go otherwise you have to stop. Continuous movement is permitted.

A stop sign as you said means you have to come to a complete stop. There are far to many of them for my liking in Celebration - about one every 100 meters it feels like :rolleyes1

Thank you , that is a big help . Can stop stressing as much now : )

Dole whips are a sort of whipped up ice cream available from MK and the Poly. The pineapple ones are SO refreshing on a hot day - you can also buy them as floats!

They're a must buy for me every trip :)

Also re driving - the majority of car rear lights are red, not just braking lights, so be careful!

I would stongly suggest the OP went to Walmart (on 535) or Publix (535&192) or Super Target (just after Publix on 192) rather than at the Goodings store (the one you mention on crossroads)
Goodings is open 24/7 but the prices there are ridiculous.
You can get some items at half the price at your disney hotel's mini-store ... and disney prices are already ridiculous themselves ...

Only go to Goodings for extreme emergencies when you just can't go the extra 3 miles down the road to walmart. (or if you're on foot and need a supermarket within walking distance of DTD)

Got to agree with that. The Disney Hotel prices are double what Goodings are which are still more than Publix and it doesn't have half the range! October last Dis seemed to have real jacked the prices up, $12 for a bottle of wine you could buy at Goodings for $6.50. Publix had realy nice Haloween themed reusable carriers which my DD used as a Haloween bag once we got home. Sorry about the thread drift!

a few notes:

School Bus - only when it's stopped with its flashing lights on do you have to stop behind it - or if you're coming from the opposite direction on an undivided road. you must stop. if you don't you will get a VERY major ticket. very. This is true in all 50 states. You cannot pass a school bus that is stopped with its stop lights flashing (meaning its dropping or picking up).
again, this is true on both sides of the street of an undivided road. You MUST stop in both directions of an undivided road. Children may get off the bus and cross the street - you have to be stopped on both sides.

stop signs - often stop signs come in groups - as in there is a stop sign in all directions. This is called a 4-way stop. In a 4-way stop, if two cars arrive at once, perpendicular to each other, the car on the right has the right of way.

pulling out of parking lots into the road - remember that the traffic is coming from the wrong way.....the opposite direction....this means that as you pull out of a parking lot into the traffic be sure to look to your left for the traffic...look left look left look left...
