Usually we fly to Orlando and stay at a WDW hotel then get a car to pick us up for the pier. We used Disney Transportation once, but didn't care for the timing.

If you drive to the pier, where do you like to stay before the cruise? Do you leave your car at the hotel or park at pier.

Might stop at Tampa for night or two. If we do Park at pier, where do you recommend. It's a 4-day Dream and just 2 of us.

Thank you!

We've driven from Houston area several times. I recommend stopping at a drug store on your way into Central Florida to get a Sunpass for your vehicle to skip toll booths on the Turnpike. You may can get one online ahead of your trip. Not sure. Worth looking into.

We are actually planning to drive down in May for a cruise. I had us booked at the new Homewood in Cape Canaveral but my boys asked to stay at the Hampton in Cocoa. Our last stay at the Hampton in Cocoa back in Sept 2014 wasn't stellar. It was being remodeled then. Lots of construction dust, etc. My brother was with us, though, and took my boys out to the beach to body board. He passed away in Nov 2015. The boys want to go stay there again so they can go back in the ocean and reminisce. I can't argue with that. If not for the sentimental reasons I would be staying at Homewood.

As to parking, we parked offsite at Park Port Canaveral once. NEVER again. Ever. Awful experience. Bad enough we won't even consider trying any others. We park at the port terminal. Yes, it's a bit pricy but it's convenient & dependable. No hassles. No worries. Park & go in. Return & go get in the car. No shuttles. Nobody else handling luggage logistics. No shuffling family in different directions. Less chance for stress or issues. It's worth the extra $$ to ensure a no-stress start & end to our cruises.

If you have any other questions let me know.

Since you have your own car, I would park it at the pier. It's not expensive and the easiest. You can stay in Tampa, Orlando or Cocoa Beach the night before. Since we fly in, we prefer to sleep at Cocoa beach and be at the pier at the earliest possible time. We always stay at the Residence Inn but, browsing the board, you'll see many other suggestion on where to stay in that area.

Where do you stop along the way from Houston? Do you spend the night someplace? We will have a brand new car then, the pier parking is safe as far as dings? And, you can walk to the ship? Have you ever left your car at Homewood Suites. I see they have a park and cruise rate?

We are soooooo familiar with the drive! We used to live on the I-12 corridor in Louisiana. All my mom's family lives in Pensacola, FL & my dad's family + my parents live in Alabama. We also used to drive to WDW frequently. And I lived in Central Florida for over 10 yrs when I was a kid. In the past we stopped for a night in Pensacola staying with my grandmother before she passed. We also stopped for a night in Tallahassee at a Hampton many years back. Now, crazy as it sounds, we prefer to drive it all the way through. We like to push through, get there, and catch up on rest. Being close for embarkation day is a plus because we get refreshed & recharged in time to start the cruise. Our sons are now 19 & 20 so we have 4 drivers when they come along. Even when it's just the husband & me, we will still switch off a couple times & drive it all the way. We've also driven just the 2 of us from Miami to Houston all at once. We're road-trippers!

We time it so we can get through Baton Rouge when it's not rush hour. That's your biggest obstacle. Their traffic is absolutely obscene. My husband is working just west of Lake Charles, Louisiana now and I can tell you in the afternoon rush hour it will back up at the big bridge on I-10 eastbound. Our current plan for May is to get up & out at about midnight on a Sunday/Monday. Hopefully we'll hit Baton Rouge as rush hour begins. The rest should be a non-issue. We expect to get to the Hampton in Cocoa mid-afternoon Monday. We'll probably force ourselves to stay awake then go to bed at a normal evening hour. I'm sure we'll sleep in on Tuesday to maybe 9. The boys can hit the beach & we'll go to Ron Jon. Relax Tuesday. Solid night sleep Tuesday night. Embark on Wednesday. Normally we don't do a full day with an extra night but we're making that time for our boys to do their sentimental things.

I'm not sure where you're coming from in Texas. For us coming from Houston-ish (Seabrook) I'd say a good halfway spot is Pensacola. We stayed at a hotel right by the airport several years back and it was nice. Good location by the mall. Lots of restaurants. It's also convenient to half a dozen family members' houses so I'm biased on the location. LOL!

The parking structure at the DCL terminal is secure. I'm more confident with it than anywhere else. We like parking in the structure for the added benefit of being covered in a concrete structure. In the hot months the car won't heat up as much. We always drove our Tahoe which is a bigger vehicle. Never any dings. If it's a concern you can park on the top deck which is most likely to have gap spots. There's also a preferred parking section for a small additional surcharge that seems like the spots may be a tad more generous. When you pull in to enter the terminal area stop by the curb out front where everyone is loading/unloading. You can drop your checked bags with the porters there (give them a little tip :) ) then go park your car. Then, yes, you just walk over to the terminal building. Not far at all. I think it's on level 3 that there's the elevated walk-across with the dedicated security check. Like at the airport. You'll see it. The preferred parking is a lot on the side of the building so it's even less of a walk. Those spots aren't covered, though.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Such great help, thank you! What do you pay per day at the pier? We are west of Houston. So, i-10 which is awful here too!

There are spots along I-10 that are crazy. Baton Rouge at rush hour isn't the scale of Houston's but it's pretty bad.

Port parking prices can be seen here. I'm providing the link so you can see all the information including address for GPS. Scroll down to the arrival information section.

We usually drive in from Pensacola and stay at either the Residence Inn or if we get a good rate at WDW, one of the resorts. I've done both the park and shuttle from the Residence Inn and park at the port--I prefer the port since it's on my time, we can do express walk off and get through Orlando traffic fairly easily. I've parked two (at the time) new/new-ish cars and no problems doing so. I like to park on the surface (vice garage), pull through so when departing it's easy peasy to get going. If you decide to stop halfway here in Pcola feel free to ask me any questions :)

How far is Pensacola to the residence inn? Thank you!

I think technically it's a 7 1/2 hour drive. That said, it's a pretty boring 7 1/2 hours so I stop about 3 times so it can be 8 to 8 1/2, if traffic is good. Nothing like Houston's for sure, but I've found Gainesville can be a little hairy depending on the time of day and whether there is any sort of university activity. Fortunately football season is over in that regard!

Orlando is home for us but we lived in Houston (League City) for almost 6 years. We're very familiar with the "delightful" I-10 drive. If you want to stop, Pensacola is the best 1/2 way stop. If you're interested, the National Naval Aviation museum is suppose to be very nice. We always drove the 1000 miles straight through in about 16 hours. If you can get an early start, it's not horrible (going West is easier since you gain the hour).

When we drive over from Texas (we live in San Antonio), we like to stay at the Marriott Residence Inn Cape Canaveral / Cocoa Beach (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/mlbri-residence-inn-cape-canaveral-cocoa-beach/). It's about a 5-7 minute drive from the Disney port location. The hotel offers free shuttle service to/from the hotel and Disney port. And, they offer a "Park and Stay" package where you can include a parking fee on your bill to leave your car parked in the hotel parking lot while you're on your cruise. The cost is less than half of what Disney charges to park at the port. We enjoy staying there and the shuttle makes it super easy to get from/to port and back.

I was at my Gramma's in Pensacola once & my aunt asked me how terrible my drive in was since it was rush hour. I was like "What? That's a rush hour? That's cute!" LOL! If I get caught in the city or on the other side at certain times I won't even try to come home. I find something to do and stay put. You have to plan your daily activities closer in around the time of day. If not, you're done-for for hours. I've never done that in Pensacola. ;)

I personally like the Naval Aviation Museum better than the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. Of course it's been 18 years since I went to D.C. but I remember being rather disappointed in it. The museum in Pensacola is very, very well-done.

Thanks everyone for your help. If you were going to go about 2 hours past pensacola, where would we stop? Hotels in Pensacola or other cities you like for an overnight break, near restaurants... Thank you!

Thank you! I think Tallahassee would be more expensive. Anything to see/eat close in Marianna, FL?
I wouldn't say there's a lot to do around Marianna. At the Hwy 71 exit there seems to be a decent selection of restaurants, chain restaurants, fast food, etc. If you google Marianna Florida Restaurants it brings up a map & list you can look over.

When are you going? I'd make sure there's nothing big going on at FSU. If you want to go a little further, we have friends who always stay in Perry for game weekends - less crowded & cheaper. I can find out exactly where they stay if we want a recommendation.
Or have you thought about cutting down 98 and finding something on the coast? Again would depend when you're driving. It would be a change of scenery from I-10
