We will be leaving late afternoon (3:30 or so) and crossing at Port Huron on Dec. 16. We plan to drive as far as we can - hopefully 6 hours or so before stopping for the night, and then driving the rest of the day the 17th. We have always taken I75 straight down, but we have never driven in December before (only in the summer, and at March Break). Wondering if there is any advantage to taking I77 in the winter?? I am a really nervous winter driver, and am praying for NO SNOW!!! Google maps shows I77 being only a 5 mile driving difference, and about 25 minutes longer. Thanks for any advice:thumbsup2

We took I75 last December (right before Christmas) with no problems. Ohio can be a bit messy but after that it was smooth driving.

If anything I-77 would be worse in winter, I think. There's one hill with THREE runaway truck ramps on it, and we found the traffic--while nothing a 401 veteran should be alarmed at--pretty heavy comparatively. Also, contrary to seemingly everyone else's experiences on here, we found I-77 considerably LONGER than I-75. Maybe it's having Dave Hunter's excellent guide, or maybe it's just that the guide details all the known speed traps. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the input! We do know I75, and the kids love to follow along in the book, so maybe we will just stick to what we know. Just wanted to check out our other options.

We have done both I75 and I77... We prefer I75 if the weather is questionable at all... but we like the scenery of I77... Either way is roughly the same distance for us as we are midway between either route...
But.. we have also had bad weather on I75 and got stuck in Corbin Kentucky for 2 nights (in a trailer) due to snow... My advice is to keep a good eye on the weather and stop if necessary!!

I-75 Is the only route my family and I always use when driving to Toronto - Orlando.

We had always driven down in the summer and December 2010 was the first time we drove in the winter. The only bad weather we had was a lot of snow in London, Ontario and that was it. Besides that it was also very cold when we stayed in Lexington, Kentucky and it got so bad that they closed schools and other things going on for minor snow flurries which is nothing compared to Canadian weather, although they are not use to that type of weather. It was also colder during that time of the year in Tennessee and Georgia, because we had some locals tell us that it's been a bit farmer in the month of December. We are planing to drive along I-75 this coming December and will be interesting to see if the weather it those staes will be different then last year.
