I am looking at backup plans in case of a delta strike. The first plan is another airline but I do not know what a strike would do to the ticket cost/availability.

The next thought was driving which is a last resort. I just read the entire driving thread(300+ posts). I think it is a good idea to avoid dc but the hills of I81 make me nervous.

For those who have done this 81-77-26-95 trip is it doable straight through with three drivers or am I asking for problems?

Depending on speed, traffic, stops, etc. your looking at 18 -22 hours on the road (It's 1240 miles for me). You know your drivers better than I do, but it should be do able.

Anything is DOABLE, but I wouldn't go out of my way to avoid the DC area. Just plan so that you pass the Baltimore - DC corridor between 9pm - 4 am.
BTW - If you charged the tix, you have a good chance of getting a credit if the worst happens.
Try looking at Jetblue or Southwest so you don't have to worry.
Driving stinks! Good luck and Happy Holidays!

I've only gone to VA on 81...but I like it. I don't know where you are leaving from in NY but you could cut across on 84. My brother who is a trucker, swears by 81...he will not drive 95 if at all poss. Quick off and ons.

Well, I'm in PA and take 81-17-95. 17 brings you over to 95 about an hour above Richmond and then I take ?295? around Richmond. I hate the Baltimore and the Washington areas :scared1: and totally avoid them. I'm the only driver and do it in 2 days. The first day I drive 12-14 hours and finish the last 6 hours or so on day 2. With 3 drivers, it shouldn't be difficult to do straight through, but you'll probably be exhausted when you arrive...

I also use US 17, but I have done 77 26. If you hit DC in the middle of the night, 70 270 is ok too.
