We will be driving from NY, leaving on July 2. Is there a website that I could plan my drive - gas stations, rest stops. We will be driving on I-95.

We will be leaving on July 4th weekend and are anticipating traffic. Do you think it would be better to leave at 2pm on friday or later? We want to get to Disney as early as possible.

I am also looking for a website that gives you the exact breakdown of mileage for each state.

Thanks so much

Sandy

Try clicking on the thread at the top of this page-(transportation board) "Important for those folks driving" thread. You might also take a look at www.usastar.com/i95/homepage.htm. Have a safe trip!

Hi! We have been driving from NY to Orlando every summer for the last 10 year so maybe I can help you. First of all, the website referred to you by Buzzme is a great one with tons of information.

It would really help to know where in NY you are leaving from and which way you are driving. We always take 95 (Cross bx expressway) to the GWB but I've heard there are alternate routes for people coming from up north? I know the Cross Bronx Expwy can be a real nightmare on regular days, never mind on the Fourth of July weekend.

We went for the 4th last year leaving on a Thursday (3rd) night around 10pm and arriving in Orlando around 7pm on the 4th. We usually drive straight through though, I don't know if you're planning on stopping for the night or not. I do remember heavy traffic all the way to the Delaware Memorial Bridge, we were delayed about 1 1/2 hours, but everything else was smooth sailing for us. Again, it all depends on where you are leaving from but unless you are leaving from way upstate, I would leave much later in the day.

This webiste shows miles in each state on I95, it does get a little depressing watching those mile markers though!!! http://www.ihoz.com/I95.html

Please keep in mind that the PEPSI 400 July 3, 2004 .will be held during this time at Daytona International Speedway, and there will be 200,000+ NASCAR Fans added to the mix...I would leave as soon as you can.

Magic,
Tahnks for the info - we did not know this. It definitely alters our plans a little bit

Depending where you are in NY, you really might want to consider the 81 route....my brother who is a long haul trucker swears by it, he will not take 95.

I think you are going to hit massive traffic leaving NY at 2 pm. I don't know where you are leaving from, but everyone is going to be on the road at that time. Most people will be leaving work early to get a head start on the holiday weekend.

If it is possible for you I would suggest leaving at 2:00 am. I have done this twice and it has worked out great.

I'm in Plattsburgh, way up near Canada. I'm 4 hours north of Monroe, NY in Orange County and 2.5 hours north of Albany.

We were going to leave for our Oct. trip when the kids got off the bus and organized probably @5pm on a Friday then drive about 8hrs and stop (2am or so) for a hotel sleep. This would only put us in MD. Then the next day we'd have a whole other day of driving and another night in hotel on Sat. Arriving in WDW on Sun.

I've been thinking lately that maybe we should just try to drive all night on Friday and try to get a good portion of the trip done while the kids are asleep. Check-in a most places isn't till 2pm.

I have several questions. What exactly is this route 81 way that people are talking about? Is it much longer?

Also, If I do take this route, and leave here at 5pm on Friday and we drive through the night and into next day until 2pm (stopping of course for Bfast and lunch and bathrm breaks) where will that put me at 2pm? I need to try and find a category 2 Marriott for a free night's stay. I have no idea how this rte 81 goes, or where we will be?

I'm wondering if we should try the driving through the night on Friday though, because on that Sunday we have MNSSHP! Don't want to be too tired!

Sorry So Long. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Any advice?

Mom of five: I looked at a map and if you follow 87 down to about Poughkeepsie NY you meet up with I-84. Go west on I-84 to Scranton PA where you'll meet up with I-81 or you can meet up with 81 by going 87 to Albany NY and then taking I-88 to Binghamton NY and meet up with 81. We are driving thru the night from Maine, but we are all adults and have 3 drivers. Check the Marriot website for their locations. Also check the Nascar website for race info. We had to change our route because a race was scheduled on the night we were traveling near Charlotte NC off of I-77. We were originally going 84-81-77-26-95 but changed to 84-81-66-17-95 which comes out around Fredricksburg, Va.

What exactly is this route 81 way that people are talking about

Route 81 runs from Watertown, down though Syracuse, Binghamton NY, through PA and Past Washington DC. This will let you bypass NYC all together, there is no need to travel though the City if you do not need to.:D

It looks like the trip would be about 1.5 hours longer (considering that neither way had any traffic) if taking the 81 rte. It's an unfamiliar rte for us. We are use to all the exit facilities/resturants that 95 has to offer. Does 81 have good exits (hotels, McDs)? Also, is 81 nice and wide like 95 with wide shoulders? I wouldn't drive it if the whole thing was like the Taconic.

Type in any search engine "interstate 81 information" and a whole bunch of websites come up. That's how I reseached my trip. Also go to www.travelcoupons.com. It shows maps of each state with the cities found on each interstate with coupons for various motels. :thewave:

Mom of five: If you decide to take I-81 you'll also have to determine where you'll get back on I-95. We're going 81-66-17-95 coming on to 95 around Fredricksburg, Va. You can also go 81-64-95 and come out around Richmond,Va. or go 81-77-26-95 and come out south of Santee,South Carolina. Good luck with your planning and have a "magical time" in WDW.
