Driving from CT to DW day after Thanksgiving

Hello. My wife and I and two children (7, 3) are driving from CT to DW the day after Thanksgiving. I want to avoid tolls and traffic (especially major cities), so I was thinking about going into PA and down 81, then 77 to 26. Has anyone done this? I've heard 81 can be tricky but I think by avoiding all the possible 95 traffic during Thanksgiving weekend....it might be worth it. We've driven to MO and back summer of '11 and the kids do fairly well.

Hello! We will driving from MD on the same day... we will actually start our trip on Thanksgiving Day. The route you selected is wonderful and we've driven to Florida that way before. It's really very pretty and a nice drive. Careful on the down hill side of the hill after Wytheville, VA.... it's a doozy!

The other suggestion I might have is to consider taking 81 to 64 to 95 in Richmond. Also not a bad drive and it gets you on 95 after the tolls.

I also looked at 64 to 95....I'm just thinking to avoid 95 as much as possible due to holiday traffic. Although if there's snow near the mountains, 95 will be my choice. Hey, maybe we'll pass you!!!! we are planning to stop for the night somewhere, probably just north of Charlotte.
