Driving from B'ham - 280/I-75 or I-65/231/I-10/I-75?

Checking to see recent experiences with drives from the Birmingham, Alabama area. Is it better to take 280 to I-75 or to go I-65, then 231 to I-10 to I-75?

(Not considering going through Atlanta. We've made the trip that route too many times and regretted it--if it isn't very heavy traffic, then there are wrecks or construction and it adds hours to our trip!)
