It looks like we might have to fly from LHR to Atlanta this August enroute to OKW. Has anyone driven from there to WDW? We've driven from Miami to Orlando in the past and that was quite an easy drive but, Atlanta looks a lot further away.

Hi, we did this drive, when we landed in Atlanta, stayed the night and left first thing in the morning. It's an easy drive but it did take us 6/7 hours with only a couple of brief stops.

why not fly? does it add that much to the cost if you fly?

it's a very long drive...you'll waste a day in each direction if you drive it...
and driving is very tiring...

The problem we have with flying is, we will be flying standby from the UK and are not sure where or when we will be arriving in the US. This makes it difficult to plan internal flights, so if we can drive to WDW from whatever airport we arrive at, that works better for us.

it's doable, but it will take at least 6 hours - and that's in perfect driving conditions....if you have bad weather or traffic jams, it will take longer...

Thanks, are there any points of interest on the way? We will have a couple of days before we check in at OKW so we wouldn't mind stopping off on the way down. Is it too much of a detour to get to the seaside?

here's the map of the southeastern USA

normally, you drive straight down from atlanta to orlando (on I-75)...
instead of driving straight down, you could drive across, towards Savannah, and then drive down I-95...but I-95 is still just an interstate highway and they all look pretty much the same...unless you get off and drive on much smaller roads, you're not going to see anything...

i'm trying to remember savannah....i haven't been there in 37 years (when i took a college road trip from my university in baltimore Maryland....my roommates and i drove from baltimore down to disneyworld - way back in 1974)..
anyway, i think that savannah is considered to be quite pretty, with historic areas downtown....but i don't know that i would waste my time on a detour just to see it...but you could look it up and look up the driving route you might take along the way there...

You could go to Savannah Georgia its a really beautiful spot :) I have stayed here once and my plan is one day to go back :)

using mapquest, here's the direct route from atlanta airport to WDW:

the link isn't working...trying again:

ok...so my link isn't working...

you can get the directions on the map that i linked above..

click on "get directions"
then as your starting point - type in Hartsfield-Jackson atlanta international airport (the name will pop up the moment you enter hartsfield)
as your destination - type in walt disney world

then click go and you'll see the i-75 route down to orlando..

Thanks for all the info. Looking at the map, I think Savannah might be a little too far out of our way and, if there isn't much else of interest, maybe we'll just get to WDW as quickly as possible - never a bad idea!

I agree, doing any diversions will just drag it out, unfortuneatley just 'head down' and get to the destination as quickly as possible!

We have done the drive a few times, mainly visiting friends in Atlanta when we have been in WDW. It is a quite a long drive but a very easy one, once out of Atlanta you are not likely to see many holdups and apart from stopping to fill up the car and empty our bladders we just shot straight through, 6/6.5 hours at a good pace.

Once on the 75 you will not see much at all apart from rest stops though, just stick on the cruise control and point the car South.

Yep a stopover in savannah would add about 2 hours extra onto your trip :) the drive down from Atlanta to orlando is all in land so can't think of any other places of interest. Any seaside resort you will have to make a detour :)
