Driving distance to St. Petersburg?

I'm not sure this is the right board to post this on, but I wondered if anyone had any experience with driving directions to St. Petersburg and time involved. I would like to take my teenagers to the Salvidor Dali museum there, and wondered what amount of time is involved with the drive there and what the freeway is like (repair work, etc.). Does anyone have any input on this? Thanks..

I'm sorry I didn't make that very clear. I mean driving from the WDW resort area to St. Petersburg.

Ugh.

That said, it's about a one hour 45 minute trip each way on a fairly direct route when there's no traffic.

Now to the ugh part. The majority of the route you need to take is I-4. I-4 is undergoing MAJOR construction in both directions, with major back-ups. It's as bad on the weekends as it is during the week. There's seldom "no traffic".

The Dali Museum is wonderful, but I'm not sure I'd make the trip for it at this point. If you'll be back in a couple years once the road work is done, it will be a much more pleasant experience.

ugh, is right. I havn't paid attention to the road reports,, and this will change the plans I had for a short stay on Anna Maria Island :(

Will have to rethink the last part of this trip :earseek:

Ducklite,, I have to mention that my youngest DD cut off about 24 inches from her hair this past December,, and I remembered your sig for 'locks for love' or some such, and we sent the ponytail to them. It made her feel great doing that. Just thought you would know you influenced us on that ;)

Thanks for the responses.

I'm starting to rethink this part of the trip. It's not a necessity, but I have always wanted to go there, and even considered trading off a night at the cabins for one on the beach. I'm not too enamored with spending all day in traffic just to get somewhere, and we'll see the gulf on the way back home. I'm glad for the input on the I-4 situation. The last time I went to St. Pete was maybe 12 years ago, so things have changed a bit since then, I'm sure.

I think the "ugh" does it for me. Time for Plan B......

I don't want to throw water on the "ugh" factor in the I-4 construction in Polk County near Lakeland, but it isn't as bad as has been said.

If you want the latest driving conditions use this link:
http://www.i4polk.com/content/interior.asp?section=curconditions&body=seg2.asp

The lowest average speed along the construction route is 60 mph now. That is not to say that during rush hour and at other times, that traffic isn't slower. But, it isn't as bad as has been indicated.
