I finally got the "official" answer to the passport question when driving into the US and flying within the US.

All the travel agents told me we would need passports, then I was referred to Passport Canada who could confirm we only will need drivers license and birth certificates when driving into the US (this I already knew).

They in turn forwarded me to the US Embassy in Halifax who "officially" told me they "didn't think" we would need passports to fly within the US even though we're Canadian citizens"..however they told me to call my airline and find out what they specifically will want.

I then phoned Delta and they said we only will need drivers licenses and birth certificates. I asked what our 3 children will need for ID for flying and they told me they don't require children to have ID. Hmmm.....that's encouraging...LOL  Regardless our DD's will have their birth certificates, provincial health cards and a photo ID just to be safe.

So the official word is NO PASSPORTS when driving in to the US and flying within the US :thumbsup2 . Call your airline just to double check what they require.

Thought I would share.

And to save yourself from all this headache............

Get a Passaport!

Yes. No passports required to drive across the border. Once you are in the US you are on a domestic flight and only photo ID is required not proof of citizenship.

Get passports for the children. I know that the 85.00cdn is a bit steep but should anything happen the passports are worth there weight in gold. Should any thing happen while you are away those passports have all the information that anybody needs. You can take the chance but the rules are changing by the minute. So what an airline says is acceptable today may not be next week!! U.S customs asked for photo i.d for my kids when we took then across the border this summer from niagara falls when we were headed to Darien Lake for the day. Health cards are not a form of i.d in the states. We are flying Delta out of Buffalo in March and I would not even think of going without there passports. Good luck!
