Driving a camper without brakes

We are driving a 1978 Viking Litter Gasser from Iowa to the Fort. It is a small pop up and it does not have brakes on the trailer. I have been told by some people that we will not be allowed to go through the mountains because the trailer doesn't have brakes while other people tell us that is does not matter because our trailer is so small. Does anyone know for certain if I can go through the mountains or will I have to go through the pan handle and over?
 
As long as the gross weight of the trailer is less than 2500 lbs, I don't think brakes are required.
 
First of all, no one is going to prevent you from driving over the mountains. The requirement for brakes is determined by the State the trailer is registered in. Look up the Iowa requirements (usually a function of trailer weight). You are probably ok as you are with a small PUP.
