Hi - just wondering for those who drive 81 and then go on to 95 - do you go down Route 66 or is there an alternate/better route? We don't want to go closer to Washington DC but we find the little jogs to get on to I-95 a little confusing and we often miss the first turn and spend the rest of the time very anxious. Has anyone done I-81 to I-64 and across to Richmond and back on to I-95? Any input would be great - CAA's triptik puts on I-66.
Thanks,
Mo

We have always used the CAA triptiks and done the 1-66 jog when we have driven down for March break. For our next trip in February, I am thinking that it might be best to try the Richmond route as well! Once you are past Syracuse and the FingerLakes, the weather is usually driveable. Just once, coming back, did we hit a major storm in the mountains coming through Pennsylvania. Do you have a GPS? We are thinking this will be invaluable when it comes to alternate routes!

P.S. Also from Kingston......too funny! :rotfl2:

Taking 64 from 81 to 95 is super easy and very scenic but very hilly taking 66 is shorter and quicker but can be a little confusing I have done both and would take 64 again unless the weather was bad , i was towing a large trailer or driving a big motor home .

hope this helps

Thanks for the quick replies and to my fellow Kingstonian - we do have a GPS so that should be helpful. We really hate that little jog around 66 and the weather should be good when we go (April 24th) so maybe we'll try the alternate route!

I almost forgot - does doing the alternate route (64) add on any time?

It does add some extra time but less than what you would add buy getting even just a little lost . The scenery that time of the year on I 64 would be well worth the little extra time .

Thanks - both times previously we've gotten turned around either going down or coming back so we'll try the other route!

Less time on 95 the better. Way more trucks and speed freaks compared to 81/77/26/94/4. Avoid Charlotte, NC rush hour on 77, nothing compared to DC traffic but who like to sit in traffic on holidays. Although once you hit the HOV during rush hour you move.
