Hello,

I am preparing for my first driving trip to Florida. I am going to Fort Lauderdale. I know this is Disney forum, but I found here lots of good info on driving.I'll be taking 79-77-95 road. I'll be leaving Toronto March 12 evening. One main driver, my wife can be occasional driver for short time. Two kids.

My plan - leave after work at around 6:30pm. Drive about 6-7 hours to south of Pittsburgh and stay in motel/hotel to get 5-6 hour sleep. Next day drive somewere up to Jacksonville. Third day up to Fort Lauderdale. I have to be in Fort Lauderdale at about noon Saturday, March 14th.

Does this plan sounds reasonable?

Main question - what is acceptable driving speed in US on this route. I know here in Toronto you can safely do 10km/hour over the speed limit. But in US, if speed limit 65, can I drive reasonable safely 70?

Another question is about speed traps. In US, I understood that I-19 has a lot of speed traps and I should keep my speed under the limit. Anybody knows other famous speed traps along that route.

Also - any idea where I can check if driving conditions are good (no snow) around that route? If there is bad snow storm, I can probably go I-75 route, but that ads 3hours :-( at least.

Thanks in advance!

Urban Interstates are 55 mph, rural interstates 65 mph, some rural Interstates 75 mph.

US 19 is 55 or 65. When driving through Summerville, WV, do not speed at all.

This sounds reasonable. If fact, I'll probably be following similar timing/routing that same evening.

I've found (with the exception of US 19) you can go up to 10 mph over the speed limit, without any police officer even paying attention to you. In fact, you'll still have a lot of people passing you.

Speed really depends on where you are. Ohio, for example, tends to come down VERY hard on out-of-staters speeding even a tiny bit.

I'd err on the side of caution, especially since you're not familiar with the roads....
