Driver killed in monorail crash....

Heard about this this morning. so sad. :sad1:
best friend went to mk yesterday but thank goodness wasn't on the monorail than

I just came home and heard about this. :guilty: This is such a very sad story, it sounds like a one in a million accident. I am very sorry for his family, and also for his fellow college program friends.

This is a very sad and tragic event and my prayers will go to the family of the driver who was killed as well as to the driver of the other monorail and the guests who were on board at the time.

IMO the monorail is the safest form of transportation I have heard of with very few accidents and only 1 tragedy (this one) and I will continue to use the monorail when I am at WDW and I will also try to get a chance for my kids to sit up front with the driver.

People die in car accidents every day and still everyone drives a car, plane crashes happen and every day people still fly. I will continue to use the monorail!

I have actually interacted with the Cm, Austin while he was on the MK platform at the MK. He was very enthusistic and seemed to enjoy his job very much. I am also a CM, please pray for his family and our disney cm family.

I agree. I will still continue to use the monorail as well, since it is safe 99.9% of the time.

And as far as the video goes; is it of the actual crash? Because if so I don't know why anyone would want to watch it.

Just curious...nothing I've seen has been 100% clear...Is the entire monorail system shut down or just the Epcot spur?

What a terrible thing to happen. Thoughts and prayers for everyone involved, in particular for the driver's family.

He was not part of the college program. New reporters are quick to think they know everything before researching this stuff before it's reported. They've been giving out wrong info all day long... it first started with the accident occuring AT epcot, not at the TTC which you can plainly see from the only photo/video.

The cast member had about 3 years senority, with his first two years at Studios attractions.

Considering the staggering number of monorail trips made annually and the surprisingly low number of accidents, I daresay the actual percentage is probably closer to 99.9999%. It's still far and away safer to travel to the MK or Epcot by Monorail than from your hotel to the TTC by car or bus!

Still, my thoughts and prayers are with Austin's family during what I'm sure is a very difficult time. We lost one of us today. :sad1:

The local news has announced that the monorail system will be down again on Monday. The CM killed was a member of the college program.

Actually local station just said he graduated from high school in Kissimmee and is a student at Stetson. He has worked at Disney since 2006 and has been a monorail pilot for 8 months and loved his job.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Austin.

This is so sad. My heart goes out to the driver and his family and everyone involved. This is a tragedy for this young man's family. My family's prayers are with them.

Horrible, horrible news. Prayers to family and friends of the young man.

Busses are being used for Transportation to MK as well as the ferry boat. And busses running to Epcot from the TTC and resorts.

I would've expected something a bit more on world news tonight, but it was only about 10 seconds long. They showed them putting up black fabric over the TTC. They already have "refurb" walls erected around the direct impact. I'm guessing they won't move the monorails until they're done investigating. Then they'll crane them both off the beams.

I was shocked to hear this sad news. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

My friends and I have had this discussion as well.

I'm sure at some point the news will say it was due to the driver texting. This isn't possible since the monorail has many redundant systems that (a) prevent it from going too fast, (b) prevent it from going too fast into a station and (c) prevent it from getting too close to another car. Even if the override is engaged by the driver, it will only allow it to go a very slow speed (used to change tracks and other maintanance issues.

So even if he was texting, sleeping, whatever...the system should've taken care of it, so texting wasn't the cause.

Sorry, I just wanted to get my rant out in the open as the news tends to spin these things out of control and not research and actually use their brains to think about something before writing it.

Once again, his family is in my thoughts.

I will also happily use the monorail system in the future. To tell you the truth, I think the buses are a lot scarier than the monorail could ever be. And, I would have no problem riding the buses as well.
