Drive own car to save money?

Im in the minority here and always rent a car for long road trips. I don't like adding any extra wear and tear to my car and can relax more and enjoy the trip not worrying about my car.

another vote to use your own car instead of rental.... thoughts....

• Adding 2000 miles for an annual trip is nothing.... just make sure you do the oil change.
• the only reason I would rent a vehicle is if it offered more luggage space for a large group.
• is this the car on a lease and you are nearing your maximum mileage?
• do you have a warranty or extended warranty? This can shorten your coverage.

I don't think we will ever drive to WDW but that's because we are 4500 kilometers away, which is about ~40-50 hours driving. No thank you. I will happily take a 5 hour flight.

4500km one way? I would fly.... however for this situation.

• Original poster stated 2000 miles round trip » 1000 miles one way or 1600km.
• The plane at 2.5 hours sounds convenient, but for me... I need to add 5 hours to that time. So plane is 8 hours one way vs 17 hours by car. As long as there is no snow.... I'll take the car.
  • 1 hr to drive to airport
  • 3 hours in advance pre-flight for an international flight
  • 1.5 hr to drive from airport to family or hotel.
• Motel room is $100 a night. Gas and food is about another $100 for the day.
  In addition to the flight cost, there's luggage charges, taxi and car rental when I get to my destination.
• the beauty of driving is space for souvenirs and no overweight luggage surcharges. There is also no airline fuel surcharges.
• when self driving cars are available in the near future.... I expect less people flying.

I've always driven my own vehicle. It's comfy and never made sense to me to rent a car when I already owned a perfectly good one. The warranty stuff never factored in to it.

If I was going to rent a vehicle to drive to Disney, I'd just fly.

With the current cost of flights, I can rent a car (along with hotels, gas, and food) for less than half of what it would cost to fly.
