I guess I don't understand the route you are considering...I-65 to Montgomery? Then what? Looking at a map, I think you are better off going through Atlanta unless you want to take your time, take back roads, and do some other touring.
The opinions given in your other thread are pretty solid. Too many stop lights and not enough interstate/highway travel. I live in AL and I would even consider travel south of Birmingham when en route to Orlando.
I've gone 3 directions out of Birmingham and prefer doing the Montgomery and Dothan route. There are no 2-lane highways and the speed limit on the state highway is mostly 65. Going through Atlanta took longer and there can be a lot of traffic and a higher chance of getting backed up by construction or wrecks. My 2nd choice would be the routed that cuts "underneath" Atlanta through Tifton.
Memphis to Birmingham on Highway 78 is like traveling on an interstate (limited access and 70mph speed limit).
