I have a question for you all. We will be cruising May 2016. My son will be 4. On pirate night I am at a loss as to what costume to pack and dress him up in. He doesn't know Pirate Jake (we don't do TV) or any Pirates of the Caribbean (movies are too mature). What would you all suggest?

They do have great pirate customers in the shops worth him choosing there.

Any " generic" pirate will do, it doesn't have to be a named one.

This is what I took for my boys (3 and 5). It's adorable and COMFY and easy to pack. Doubles as PJs when you are done with the cruise. I would definitely do this again.

As an alternative, you could easily get away with a pair of black shorts, a white T shirt and an eye patch (if he would wear it). They give you little triangles you can tie on his head as a pirate "hat". My boys would have been satisfied with JUST the hat thing. :)

You can also find some cheap costumes or accessoires in the dollar shop for pirates.

We got some inexpensive ones at buycostumes.com and they usually have discount codes. They actually worked for several cruise before they outgrew them.

If he doesn't know the modern cute version of anpirate, why dress up? Doesn't seem like it will mean anything to him.

For some insane reason we had shown ds POTC at 3* and he had his own way of dressing as a pirate. (I love little boys' imaginations...they so rarely need an official costume at all) So if we had gone on a cruise like that when he was 4 it would have been very self-led for him. Otherwise we wouldn't have dressed him up for it. And we still don't, finding the bandanas dcl leaves for everyone for pirate night to be perfectly adequate.

*he had already met Sparrow at Disneyland without knowing who he was and then again that same year after watching he movie and had great interactions each time.

Thank you for the link. I've ordered this for our little man! I adore the fact that it won't be a one off use.

Thank you. Because we are doing back to back cruises in May 2016, I will let him look over what he would like. I was unaware that the shops would have anything.

Our little guy doesn't have many opportunities to engage with other children. If dressing up like the other kids helps him to interact with other little ones then we've accomplished something. His closest sibling to his age is 23 yrs old.

As for not knowing what a pirate is, that's the magic of Disney, he can imagine what they might be. My husband and I will be dressing up too. Adults do dress up for Pirate night, don't they?

No prob. They also leave a bandana in the room. My little man did a bandana, beard, and jake tshirt but he watches jake on tv. You say you don't do tv but I assume you do movies because you mentioned pirates of the Caribbean? Asking because Peter pan has more age appropriate pirates. That is what jake is based off of.
I did not know that about Jake. I will have to see if there are DVDs available of Jake the Pirate. Thank you for imparting that bit of information.

Yes, we do movies. We don't like commercials therefore there is no cable/satellite live television shows for us.

We all got pirate costumes before Halloween and I put them aside for the cruise. My husband dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow but the rest of us were just generic pirates. My four year old had a blast dressing up and I love the pictures of the characters in their costumes.

Oh yes they have jake DVDs...his show is actually called "jake and the never land pirates" so you can find it better. How old is your son? It is really more of a toddler/preschool show but my son is 7 and still watches.

I completely understand not wanting to have commercials. It makes me sick when my son requests something by brand name. Like when he asked the Easter bunny for "a hover ball by whammo". I wish I'd started him without tv when he was younger but I went through a messy divorce, his father had rights terminated, and I have no outside family and unfortunately I used the tv as a baby sitter when I needed to get things done. At least netflix doesn't have commercials.
My son is 3 and will be turning 4 at the end of February. Jake would be a perfect show for rainy days then. He will know what a pirate is when we go on our cruises!

I'm sorry you had a tough go with your son in regards to your divorce.

That is super! I wasn't sure if dressing as pirates was just for kids. I want my husband to dress to resemble Smee. I think I would get the biggest kick out of that. Ha!
