I'm asking directly about MNSSHP it is ok for the older kids to dress up in costumes and stuff right? i know usually they get told to remove said costume if it reflects that of one of the real characters, but are the rules lifted for the party nights?
like i wanna dress as Peter and I'm hand making my costume will i get ripped to shreds like Cinderella did when she asked to go to the ball and the step sisters destroyed her dress lol?

Haven't been before but are going this year and my understanding is that any sort of costume is ok. We plan on wearing costumes and our daughter is going as Elsa. Pictures I've seen indicate that just about any type of costume is acceptable.

As long as you are not posing for pictures and signing autographs, you'll be fine.

oh i bet shell be an awesome Elsa! the pictures are what made me feel it'd be ok as well

oh no worries i will just be an imitation, id never sign or take pictures (except with my family lol) thats for the true character!!
thats a huge relief I've spent so much work already and the thought that i might be asked to remove it was painful

Yup, you can wear any costume you like (well, as long as it isn't indecent) for the party, just don't act like a real character.

The not posing for pics can be a challenge. I dressed as Snow White one year and I was surprised at how many people asked me to pose for a pic. Not a problem during the actual Halloween party, since guests there know what is going on, but we arrived at 4 pm and many of the regular day guests did not seem to know about MNSSHP. Lots of people asked me questions, too. They thought I worked for Disney.

Disney's official policy prohibits you from posing for pics with other guests in costume, and it can feel awkward to politely decline, but decline you must.

well I'm doubtful anyone would want a picture with me lol, but i don't see the harm in taking a picture with someone if they are aware you're not working for disney

I may be wrong, but it seems like I read something about not be able to wear anything that may interfere with your vision, like maybe a mask or something. I could be way off base on that, but it just seems like I read that somewhere before we went to MNSSHP last year. I'm sure they have some guidelines posted somewhere.

I worked at MNSSHP events by the turnstiles. The only thing I saw entrance cast members questioning were masks, helmets, or any other head gear that creates a vision issue for guests. They want your face exposed, for multiple safety reasons. I saw a few pictures backstage of specific things to look for. That year, they were having to ask many kids in Iron Man costumes to wear their mask on the top of their head, like a visor, instead of on their face. Imagine if you ended up grabbing the wrong little Iron Man in the middle of the fireworks crowd!

That is a point I never thought of, regarding masks!

It's totally fine to dress up for the parties.

In that link you find the issue of taking pictures as the character, as under prohibited behavior it lists:

"Engaging with other Guests or impudent the operation while posing as or portraying any character in costume."

https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/faq/parks/recommended-dress/

"Attire that is not appropriate for the parks—and which may result in refusal of admittance—includes but is not limited to:
• Adult costumes or clothing that can be viewed as representative of an actual Disney character
• Masks"

And:

"Adults can visit the parks if their hair (or makeup, if applicable) resembles a Disney Princess or character, provided that they are not also wearing a costume or clothed to look like the character."

This means that even on a normal day adults have a lot more leeway than they used to, and can dress up to a certain extent. Don't go crazy making the costume look like the character, and definitely don't do hair and makeup perfectly if your outfit is also perfect.

Given that they used to say a flat out "NO" about adults and dressing up, this remains a departure of the old, strict, days.

so my costume will get me kicked out on the halloween party? since it reflects the disney version?

Another alternative particularly on non party days is disneybounding, like the picture xennia shared, where you wear an outfit themed after a character thats not actually a costume

You'll be fine. Adults dress up like Disney characters for the Halloween party all the time.

When we went, we saw two sets of fairy godmothers all in homemade costumes that were created to the minutest detail. They were amazing! We saw the Incredibles, Marvel characters, etc. I was dressed as Tinkerbell and wore a Disney licensed costume purchased off the internet. It's all fine for the party.

A funny thing happened, actually, on the way to the party. DH and I were getting our car from BWI valet to drive to MK. I was in my Tinkerbell costume and when I walked out of the lobby, a woman who was about to get in her minivan screamed with excitement because "Tinkerbell" was here and she made her three young daughters get out of the car to get their picture taken with me. I was 35 at the time and I'm a brunette. It was pretty obvious I am not really "Tinkerbell". In fact, her older daughter even said, "I don't think that's Tinkerbell". I didn't want to ruin it for her younger daughters and wasn't sure what to say so I just stood there and took a picture with the girls while the hotel manager of BWI stood there and laughed at the whole thing - it was pretty funny!

Wear your Peter costume - you'll be fine.
