Hi. How strict is the dress code for children at dinner other than the formal and semi formal nights? Can they get away with wearing nice shorts and shirts with sandals? How about the adults, can they wear shorts and collared shirts without being frowned upon?
Any info much appreciated.

We did not see any adults in shorts, bermudas, etc. for diner. Also didn't see children (2nd seating) in shorts either. They either had on dresses or slacks or pants. Our 9yo gd wore a dress every night. DCL requests no shorts etc for dining. You don't have to dress up, a pair of slacks and shirt would do. My husband didn't wear a suit or tie.

How old are the the kids...very young children could probably get away with nice shorts, but not older kids (say over 6 or 7). I have hardly every seen adults in shorts in the dining rooms.

Our DS 7 and 10 wore polo shirts and "dockers" type pants with tennis shoes. Did not look out of place at all!!!

My DS7 wore kjaki pants and polo shirts every night. On the formal night he wore a blazer. MY DD9 wore capri pants every night and on the formal nights wore a nice skirt /top or dress(church outfits). No shorts seen on the Magic by adults.

Thanks for all your input. Just trying to pack and make sure I have enough. I have two boys, ages 6 and 11. I will take your advice. Thanks again...

I think this is a great post, because I'm going to be 13 when we go on, and I was scard to not know what to wear and look very dumb at dinner.

If your kids are younger (pre-school) I don't see it as a problem. Older kids should dress per DCL's dress guidelinesAs far as the adults go, Disney specifically requests no shorts or jeans in the dining rooms, and you should respect that. If you don't wish to follow the guidelines, you are always welcome to come as you are to Topsiders or order room service.

That sounds good in theory, but after 22 Disney cruises, I can safely say that the Fantasyland where people abide by these suggestions does not exist. MANY people dress casually in the main dining rooms, and we've even see blue jeans in Palo. Personally, hubby and I enjoy getting dressed up, but anyone who is expecting formality or a strict adherence to the guidelines will be very dissapointed. Personally, I don't pay much attention to what others wear or if they are following the guidelines...I'm too busy having my own fun.

Just back from 6/1 cruise. I have 4 kids and we needed 2 cabins, by the weeks end, my younger one was sometimes asleep when 2nd seating came. My son 11, was stuck without dress pants for dinner one night and I was not going to take the chance in waking baby to look for them. I was really worried about this, put on his nicest long shorts w/tropical button down shirt, looked fine but I still worried.
All the worry was for not, he looked just as nice as any othe kids and blended in just fine.
By the way our waiters were wonderful, Louis and Joel. They were great w/ the kids, were funny, made us feel so welcome, one of the best parts of the cruise.

I can not remember who it was that posted this tip, but it is what we are going to do. (whoever came up with this, please let us know so we know who the credit goes to)

My DS has a couple of pants that zip off at the knees to make shorts. That is what I am packing for him. Pants during dinner, zip, zip, shorts after dinner. It will save on packing space, too. DH even has a pair of these. I figure I will pack his, too. He hates dressing up, so this will be an easy way for him to change into shorts even quicker. DH's are a sort of denim material, but look like dockers. DS's are that lightweight, almost swimsuite material that dries in 5 minutes. Now, if I can only keep track of all parts of them until we cruise. LOL
