Hello, and welcome to my trip report. Let me start off with the logistics and then I will get into the intros. Back in June we (DH and I) decided to get some “money’s worth” out of our annual passes that we purchased in February when I ran the Princess Half Marathon (if interested, see TR here: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2740124). My DD’s summer camp was closed the first week in August so we didn’t have any childcare planned for her that week. It was also the last week of her summer vacation before school started and the week before her 9th birthday so it was a logical choice for us to book a room with an annual pass rate for July 30th through August 6th.

We decided on Port Orleans French Quarter. We had stayed here before on our honeymoon (in ’92) and 3 other times since then. We wanted to revisit it especially since the rooms had been refurbished. I reserved a River View room and put in a couple requests – top floor, corner room (we like having the extra window). Later on DH and I talked and decided we should leave home on Friday, July 29th after work. It takes us about 8-9 hours to drive to FL from our home in NC and we figured we could get to FL around midnight if we left at 4:00 and give ourselves more park time on Saturday. (Love that extra park time!) :goodvibes So I booked a room at the Westin in Lake Mary, FL on Starwood Points I had accumulated for the Friday night.

Those are the plans – here are the executors of those plans:

Me, my name is Beth and I am a 38-year old wife, and proud mother of my DD. I also work full-time as an Executive Assistant and take the bus into the city every day for my day job.

Charlotte – where we live, work and play:
charlotteskyline.jpg

I am a lover of all things Disney (but who isn’t on these boards?) ;) I am also a runner and have run 3 races at WDW since last fall (Oct: Food & Wine Half Marathon, Jan: WDW Marathon, and Feb: Princess Half Marathon). I have to say I haven’t gotten in many miles this summer because it’s been so blasted hot here but I do what I can.

DD & I from our trip last October:
IMG_1040.jpg

My DH, John (49) – he works from home for the same company I am employed by (yea, I know we have all our eggs in one basket which does kind of scare me sometimes). I feel fortunate that he is able to work from home since he is able to take our daughter to school and pick her up so she doesn’t have to go to after-school. Sometimes, I am not able to leave work since I’m an assistant and am at the beck and call of my manager. DH also enjoys going to Disney but I think he would like it if we branched out and went other places. I keep telling him we will after my DD grows up and doesn’t appreciate going to WDW anymore (which I secretly hope never happens). ;) He is an avid UNC football and basketball fan as well.

DH and DD:

IMG_1127.jpg

Last but certainly not least my DD, Alexia (9). She loves going to WDW as much as I do. She enjoys art and playing the piano and is my gift from heaven above.

I hope to make some new DIS friends and entertain you along the way. So step right up and here we go down to Disney's version of New Orleans...

Friday, July 29th:

I woke up early that morning excited to leave for our upcoming trip. I left for work at 6:15 AM with all the bags packed and ready to be loaded in the car. I still needed to throw my make-up and toiletries into our overnight bag for our stay at the Westin that night. I also needed to put the drinks in the cooler before loading into the car, but I would do all that when I got home from work. My plan was to leave early (around 2:30) that day.

I had asked my boss in June (before reserving our room) if it was ok that I took off the first week in August as he was scheduled to be on vacation the same week. He told me it wouldn’t be a problem. So I noted my vacation time on his calendar and called 407-W-Disney! The week before my vacation I asked him if we needed to discuss/plan anything since we’d both be out the week of August 1st. He said we were good. The Thursday before we were leaving for WDW I asked him again if there was anything we needed to think about since we were both out next week “nope”, was his reply.

So on Friday morning, I again asked my boss just for good measure if there was anything I needed to do, plan for, etc. since we were both to be on vacation next week. Again, his reply was “no I think we’re good”. OK (so I think). The day drags by. I do some filing, meet with my back up at work so she knows what to do while I’m gone, clean my desk, compose my out of office email, change the voice message on my phone and then at 2:00 my boss says (no lie), “hey Beth, while I’m out next week will you make sure my email inbox is cleaned up so I don’t get that over the limit message?” I said “boss man’s name, I am going to be on vacation next week!” He said, oh yea, you are, aren’t you?” Ugh, bosses - I swear can just sometimes make you so mad you want to spit.

So after that conversation, I threw my laptop in my desk, locked it and said adios to the working world (for a week at least).

The bus going home was the slowest bus ride ever! No really, it was fine – it just seemed like forever because I was so excited.

CATS20Bus.jpg

I finally reach home and change clothes, throw my toiletries in the overnight bag and pack the cooler for the drive down.

About 30 days before our vacation, my DD had made a WDW vacation countdown chain and put it on the refrigerator. She cut Mickey’s head out of construction paper and then attached a paper chain (a link for each day) to his head. When I got home she had taken down the Mickey head and cut out a circle in the center and stuck it on one of our dog's head.

This is Caitie wearing DD’s Mickey ears:

IMG_2330.jpg

My dad showed up as he was going to stay at our house to watch our 2 dogs while we were on vacation. So I gave him the lowdown of their schedules and a quick reminder tour of where things were in the kitchen/house so he’d be comfortable during his stay.

While DH was getting his last minute work done on his computer, I threw the overnight bag in the trunk of the car (DH had already packed most of the stuff). I also got the portable DVD player set up in the backseat for DD along with the snacks/cooler for the trip.

Here’s the car packed and ready to go:

IMG_2331.jpg

Also, in preparation for the trip DH decorated the car by putting an Epcot center tag on the front of it (I think he was excited to get there, it’s his favorite park). :goodvibes

IMG_2332.jpg

We finally said our good-byes to the dogs and my dad and pile in the car, buckle our seatbelts and hit the road. I was going to drive the first leg of the trip (so I didn’t take many pictures while driving). Florida, here we come baby! :car:

The drive to FL continued…

We left our garage at 4:15 PM, with me in the driver’s seat. My DD got a DVD in the player no sooner than I had backed out of the driveway. :rolleyes1

I had also purchased my DD this game for the car trip:
states.jpg

You flip the license plate over when you spy one from that state and see how many states you can flip over. I figured it would be educational for her as well since she is required to know all her states and state capitals this year for school and that info is on the tiles you flip over.

We head down I-77 through Charlotte’s rush hour traffic calling out any other states license plates that we spot. We make it through without much delay, but then within an hour after crossing the SC state line (I can’t remember what city we were close to) we run into a wall of traffic. We inch a few feet every minute or two. The traffic stretched ahead as far as we could see. I got off at the next exit and my DH got out his map and directed me through the back roads until we finally got back on 77 and traffic was flowing again. This delay set us back about 45-minutes. We finally get past Columbia, SC and everyone decided we needed a little more sustenance than the chips, crackers and various candy I had packed for snacking on. So we stopped at our favorite fast food place, Chick-fil-A for a bathroom break and some food.

Here is DD eating her kids’ meal (not a very flattering photo):

IMG_2333.jpg

Around 9:15 and about 5 hours of driving on my part we cross the GA state line. Woo hoo one more state to go! I pull off into the visitor’s center for a much needed pit stop and ask my DH if he can drive the rest of the way. I got us through NC, SC and across the GA state line - he can do GA and FL! :)

Here is my DD at the GA Welcome Center:

IMG_2336.jpg

With DH behind the wheel we press on. Somewhere around Jacksonville we stop to fill our tank up with gas. I think I dozed off and on (I can’t sleep well in the car) until we finally reached Lake Mary around 12:30 AM. We followed the signs to our destination – the Westin and pulled into the parking lot. My DH went inside and checked us in. We got our overnight bags and were off to find our room. I know I am a bad DISer as I didn’t take pictures of the hotel or our room. Here are some I got from the hotel’s website:

westin.jpg

And our room looked just like this:

westinroom.jpg

The room was clean and spacious and was a good deal for $45 plus some Starwood points.

DD and I both took showers and then hit the sack. I think I finally went to sleep around 1:30 or so. We set the alarm clock for 7:00 AM and we all woke up when it went off. DH took his shower while DD and I got dressed and ready to go. We talked about what we were going to do that day and how excited we were to get to Epcot.

We packed up the overnight bag, threw it in the car and piled in to hit the road for French Quarter. We had about a 30-minute drive ahead of us.

I need to get back to work and get some meetings scheduled.

Next up – the drive through Orlando and breakfast at POFQ…

Saturday, July 30th - The Arrival:

When I left off we were just leaving the Westin in Lake Mary, FL which is about 20 miles north of Lake Buena Vista.

We were excited to get to POFQ. Here are some shots of the drive on I-4 through Orlando:

IMG_2338.jpg

IMG_2340.jpg

How many more minutes ‘til we get there???

IMG_2339.jpg

We’re getting closer….

IMG_2341.jpg

Finally we see the glorious sight we’ve been anxiously awaiting:

IMG_2342.jpg

We made it!! We take the exit to Downtown Disney and follow the signs until this comes into view:

IMG_2343.jpg

Woo hoo!

We stopped at security and the guard was very friendly. He greeted us with “welcome home!”. Ahh, yes it was like music to my ears - home sweet (other) home, Walt Disney World. We drove past the entrance to the lobby:

IMG_2344.jpg

And DH parked the car. Just as soon as the car came to a stop I was out the door and helping my DD out of the car. I was excited to check in.

IMG_2345.jpg

We quickly walk to the entrance of POFQ (it was about 8:30 AM):

IMG_2346.jpg

IMG_2347.jpg

We were greeted by this friendly face at the door. He also “welcomed us home” and gave my daughter a doubloon coin. We just had to stop and get our picture taken with this lovely person:

IMG_2348.jpg

We walk through the almost empty lobby to check in:

IMG_2349.jpg

We see a pleasant cast member motioning us to her to check in:
IMG_2350.jpg

As stated earlier I put in 2 requests when I made the room reservation – Top Floor, Corner Room. The cast member said she had a room that met our requests but it wasn’t ready yet. She asked if we wanted to wait for it, or she could look for something else. I told her we could wait so she asked if we wanted to be texted or called when the room was ready. I told her text was fine. Then she came back to us and said actually I found another room that is ready now that also meets your requests, do you want it instead? We say sure! She printed our room keys and showed us on a map where our room was located. She also made a birthday button for my DD since I had noted on the reservations we were celebrating her 9th birthday on the trip. When all was taken care of at check-in we headed to the Sassagoula Float Works and Food Factory for some breakfast.

On the way to the food court:

IMG_2351.jpg

IMG_2358.jpg

DH got the bounty platter and some coffee. DD and I were looking forward to eating beignets, so we placed an order for 6 beignets and split it and got a couple cartons of Mickey milk. We also purchased our refillable mugs at this meal. We have the Tables in Wonderland card and received 20% off our food there (but just FYI - it doesn’t work on mugs/beverages).

Breakfast:
Yum - freshly made beignets:

It's hard not to get powdered sugar on your face ;):

We finished our breakfast and headed to the car. The next item on the agenda is to find our room and unpack. We drive the car to the parking lot near Building 6 and park it. We all grabbed some bags out of the trunk and headed to find our room.

Up next – Unpacking and decorating the window(s) of our room…

Great start! I love POFQ. It's nice a small and I love the themeing. And of course, the beignets! We always make at least one trip to POFQ for a beignet breakfast during our stays.

Can't wait to read more...

Hi, joining in :)

Great start to your report. I saw some of your posts on the POR and POFQ threads, with lovely photos, so I'm looking forward to reading the rest of your report.

We fly out to Orlando on Sunday and we are staying at POFQ, can't wait :cool1:
My DDs are also very excited to have beignets for breakfast

Subscribing! We're planning to stay at POFQ next trip so I can't wait to read more. Also, I love the Mickey ears on the dog - totally something my kids would do.

Added: Just read your marathon TR. How awesome! I run 5Ks and would love to run a half at Disney but can't get up the nerve! I love reading people's reports of the races though.

Hi Dizneydaz  and welcome. POFQ is great, isn't it? That's cool that you have a tradition to visit it for breakfast. I am sure I will be visiting it when we return in October - gotta love those beignets!

Hello Marl and thank you so much for joining in. :goodvibes I hope you and your family have a safe journey and a wonderful holiday at POFQ. I know you are so excited! :yay: Beignets are great for breakfast or anytime for that matter! I hope you get to enjoy lots of them. ;)

DisneyDreamerMom - welcome aboard! Why do kids like to dress up dogs? It's a good thing our dogs are good natured because DD likes to put all kinds of stuff on them. You will love POFQ - it is beautifully themed.
You should try to run a half at Disney some time. :cheer2: It is the most fun you'll ever have running! I was scared to death when I ran my first half there last October but with all the entertainment and characters you will soon forget your nervousness and you get a REALLY cool medal when you're through! :cool2:

Saturday, July 30th - The Arrival Continued:

We were lugging our stuff from the car to the room where I left off in my last installment. We headed to building 6 in the direction of the river and started following the room number signs until we found our assigned room, #6348.

IMG_2389.jpg

It was indeed a top floor corner room, just what we had hoped for. :wizard:

We opened the door and DH said “wow, this is nice!” He was right, it was nice - the new bedspreads, curtains, and carpet, the new tile floor in the bathroom area along with the new tile in the shower. Everything was brand spankin’ new and elegant.

Here are some photos of the room:

We set down our bags and had a look around the room. Then we made a second trip to the car for the last of our luggage. After we got everything in the room we started unpacking our clothes, toiletries and filled the fridge with the bottled water that we brought down with us. After everything was in its place my DD and I set to the task of decorating the windows.

We usually go to WDW in October for fall break and I started decorating the rooms with Disney Halloween decorations. I guess I started something because now she wants to decorate the windows all the time. I don’t mind, because I think it is just as much fun as she does. Since it was her birthday, I let her decide the theme and she chose Princess and the Frog. I found some Tiana clings online as well as a Tiana lamp. I made a poster and also hung a banner of frogs that spelled out Happy Birthday and then a banner of dresses that looked like Tiana’s dress that spelled out Alexia. I also purchased a cheap string of patio lights from Target and hung those as well. We had the stuffed Tiana/Naveen kissing frogs and stuck those in the window for good measure too.

Here is the window decorating process and the finished result:

At about 10:30 AM everything in the room was in order and it was time to don the sunscreen, grab the sunglasses and cameras for it was time to hit the parks! The chosen park for that day was Epcot.

Here are some photos I snapped from outside the door of our room before we headed to the bus station.

After I took some pictures of our “view” we went in search of some WDW Transportation (a.k.a. a bus).

In the next installment - our first day at Epcot.

I love all your pictures from POFQ..it's such a nice resort!!
Top floor looks so nice! I was building 6 also, but ground floor. I should have gone up to the top floor just to see the view, it looks great!
Can't wait for another update!! popcorn::

Hi Beth,

What a great start to your report! I am an Executive Assistant as well, so I completely understand "the boss".:lmao: They are seriously in their own little worlds, aren't they?

POFQ! We stayed here on our very first trip to WDW in 2004. I fell in love with the resort, and have wanted to go back ever since. We have a trip booked for March 2012 (DH's 40th Birthday!) and I chose POR. Now I'm seriously re-thinking it because of your fantastic pictures of the room!:confused3

Very pretty decorations on the window! Truly fit for a princess! princess:

Being on the top floor was nice for the view! That was the first time I ever paid for a “view” at a Disney resort. I thought it was worth it. :)
I should be able to post an update tomorrow, if work isn’t too crazy!

subbing!!:thumbsup2

Welcome aboard – so glad to have you! :goodvibes

I'm in. Loving your report so far. Your window decorations were adorable!:thumbsup2

HiBadgerGirl! I’m so glad you are enjoying the report. Thanks for the compliment on the window. The best thing was that we recycled all the decorations and had a “Tiana” themed birthday party for the family to celebrate her birthday after we got home.

Hi there! I’m glad you’re in! :upsidedow Also glad you can relate to my boss – they seriously can be in their own little world! (no offense to any bosses reading) ;)
I know what you mean about doubting your decision about staying at POR. I have POR booked for our upcoming October trip and tried to change it to POFQ (because we liked it so much) while on vacation, but there wasn’t any availability. I wouldn’t worry though – I know they are refurbishing the rooms at POR (I peeked in the room windows of a finished building while visiting POR during our trip and saw the new rooms) so am hoping they will be just as nice as POFQ. I will let you know after our Oct. trip how POR was. :)
Thanks for the compliments on the windows – it was fun to decorate them!

Saturday, July 30th - Epcot

We made our way through the resort to the bus stop. We didn’t wait more than 5-7 minutes for an Epcot bus to show up. The bus did not stop at Riverside but headed straight for Epcot – woo hoo! About ten minutes later Spaceship Earth was in our view and the bus dropped its passengers off. We went through the bag check line and then on to the ticket turnstiles. After walking past Spaceship Earth we stopped to look at the wait times on the info board to see what we were in store for as far as lines go.

So, where did we go first? Test Track? Mission Space? Nope, we went to Club Cool. That was where DD wanted to go first for some reason, so that’s what we did. After she got her fill of drinks from around the world we decided to head to The Land to pick up some FPs for Soarin’ and also to ride Living with the Land.

On the way we saw this famous couple, so we stopped for pictures and autographs:

IMG_2396.jpg

IMG_2397.jpg

IMG_2398.jpg

Autograph book signed, we finally arrived at The Land. We got our FPs for Soarin’ (I think they were for between 1:00-2:00) and then went on Living with the Land which had a 0 minute wait!

IMG_2419.jpg

Some pictures of the greenhouse:

IMG_2403.jpg

IMG_2405.jpg

After we “Lived with the Land” it was time to go check out the sea, so we headed to The Seas with Nemo & Friends:

IMG_2414.jpg

IMG_2415.jpg

I think it had a 5 minute wait time posted. So we rode in our Clam Mobiles in search of Nemo. I didn’t take any pictures of the ride, but I did take some of the ocean life in the aquarium afterwards.

Dude - we found Crush:
IMG_2409.jpg

IMG_2410.jpg

And Mr. Ray:

IMG_2413.jpg

After we spent some time viewing the creatures, DD wanted to see Bruce and the other sharks:

IMG_2407.jpg

IMG_2408.jpg

She opted out on waiting in line to get her picture with Bruce and also decided that due to hunger she didn’t want to visit Turtle Talk with Crush. In fact, we were all hungry for lunch so we decided to go back to The Land and eat at Sunshine Seasons. We also figured that by the time we finished eating our FPs to Soarin would be good. So back to the land we went in search of food:

IMG_2417.jpg

IMG_2418.jpg

IMG_2420.jpg

DD got her staple of mac & cheese. DH got the Turkey and Monterey Jack Cheese on Foccacia and for the first time I was disappointed in my meal at Sunshine Seasons – I got the Spicy Cashew Chicken. I am not a fan of dark meat chicken and that is what this dish contained and it was gristly to boot. I ate the side of noodles which was good, but I won’t be ordering that dish again. After we ate, we made a quick bathroom stop and then it was time to ride Soarin’.

I had to chuckle before the ride there were some ‘tween’ boys sitting next to us in our glider. Prior to take off they kept asking the cast member if the ride was scary. You could tell they were seriously worried. The cast member said it was a flight simulator, and they said “yea, but does it go fast?" The cast member smiled and again said it was a flight simulator. So the ride started and the boys cheered and clapped during the entire ride. It was fun to observe someone’s first reaction to the ride. :)

So after we soared over California, it was time to take a Journey into Imagination.

Saturday, July 30th – Epcot Continued

After our Journey into Imagination Alexia played around for a bit:

IMG_2434.jpg

Knocking herself out in the gift store:

IMG_2435.jpg

We then went and watched the fountains for a few minutes:

IMG_2436.jpg

IMG_2437.jpg

While watching the fountains we all decided we were either thirsty/hungry so we set out to find some snacks. I knew what I wanted – my favorite snack in all of WDW, the cinnamon roasted pecans. We found the cart that sold them nearby and DD and DH got a frozen lemonade each at the same cart. We sat in the shade and enjoyed the scenery and the monorail passing by overhead while we ate our snacks.

IMG_2438.jpg

When we were done with our mini-break we decided to go to Innoventions. DD spied the Great Piggy Bank Adventure and wanted to try it. It was something we had never done before and the line wasn’t very long so we got in the queue.

IMG_2440.jpg

DD with her Piggy Bank:

IMG_2442.jpg

It was actually a cute activity and it was fun and educational as well. Here is DD putting her pig on the conveyor belt so we can play the first game:

IMG_2443.jpg

IMG_2444.jpg

We didn’t meet our goal (saving enough for a dream vacation) so DD was disappointed and asked if we could do it again. We told her we’d come back another day and try again. We then spied the line to make paper, so we decided to hop in and try our hand at that:

IMG_2445.jpg

IMG_2446.jpg

The finished product – Jiminy Cricket stamps and all:

IMG_2447.jpg

After we finished up walking around Innoventions DD asked if we could go back to the resort to swim, but not without stopping at Spaceship Earth first. I didn’t take any more park pictures that day, other than this little bunny we saw as we were headed up the ramp to get on the Spaceship Earth ride:

IMG_2448.jpg

After riding Spaceship Earth we headed to the bus stops. We waited 10-minutes for a bus and were dropped off at POFQ first. We went to the room and changed into our swim suits, grabbed our refillable mugs and headed to the pool. We stopped to fill our mugs first and then went to find a table near the pool to put them down along with our other things.

I think we swam for an hour or two and then we went back to the room to take showers. We decided we’d eat at the food court again that night. So we walked back down to Sassagoula Float Works. Again, DD got mac & cheese for dinner. DH got the pot roast, mashed potatoes and some other veggie and I chose the cheese steak sandwich with fries. The food was very tasty. We decided we wanted to see Elliott Dyson that night at Scat Cat’s so we looked around Jackson Square (the gift store) and then ventured to the lounge around 8:30 or so. We sat at a table and DH ordered a couple drinks during the show. DD got a popsicle and I got a brownie from the food court and we watched Elliott.

IMG_2449.jpg

IMG_2450.jpg

He was very entertaining and energizing and is an excellent musician/singer. He talked to DD during the show and said he was going to play a song for her. He played Under the Sea from the Little Mermaid on the steel drums. He said he was Alexia’s “brother from another mother”. :lmao:

IMG_2451.jpg

IMG_2454.jpg

If you ever have the opportunity to hang out at Scat Cat’s in the evening, it is definitely worth your time. We plan to return to Scat Cat’s on our upcoming trip.

Around 10:30 we left the entertaining scene and headed back to our room to get some sleep. Our plans were to be at Magic Kingdom for rope drop the next morning. We requested a wake-up call and then hit the sack. It had been a long, fun-filled first day.

Stick around for Day 2: Magic Kingdom :)
