Hi Everyone!

We went on the Disney Dream 4 day cruise on May 1-5th and I wanted to write a review of our experiences. I have been a member of the DIS boards for quite a while, but I mostly lurk and do not post. However, since I got some great tips for this trip, I thought it might help someone else if I posted about our experience on the Dream.

My husband, Dan and I went on the May 1st four day cruise with our daughter Kristina, her husband Mike and their 2 ½ year old son, Kai. We booked 2 adjoining cabins through Dreams Unlimited on Deck 6 (category 5A I believe) in rooms 6060 & 6058. I would highly recommend. Dreams Unlimited – we had a small issue the week before we sailed and they went above and beyond to make sure that we had everything we needed before the cruise. Thanks John, Kelsie & Marla!

SATURDAY, APRIL 30th
My husband & I flew in to Orlando from Chicago on Saturday, April 30th the day before the cruise. Our daughter and her family live in Florida so they were meeting us the next day at Port Canaveral. We were so excited to finally be going and had a fairly uneventful trip. One small hiccup, our non-stop Southwest flight actually stopped once in St. Louis and then went on to Orlando. We had no idea that we were stopping until they did the announcement on the plane, I checked my paperwork and everything said non-stop, but apparently Southwest had made a change in the 2 ½ months since I had booked the flight. No problem, we did not have to leave the plane, it just took an extra 45 minutes or so to arrive in Orlando.

It was warm & beautiful when we landed and we quickly got our rental car and headed to our hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn on International Drive. We are very familiar with Orlando having lived there for 3 years before our move to Chicago this year, but we were a little apprehensive about staying on I-Drive as it can be crazy trying to drive with all the traffic. I had read nothing but good things about the hotel on Trip Advisor and I had plenty of Hilton points to use, so we took a chance and we were glad we did. The hotel was beautiful, service was great and we enjoyed our one night there. If you are looking for a nice place to stay in the center of the action but off Disney property, I would definitely recommend that Hilton Garden Inn. It is right across the street from Wet & Wild, but there is an easy way to hop on to I-4 from the hotel.

Our favorite pizza place is right on Sand Lake Drive in the Whole Foods shopping center – Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza so we enjoyed that for dinner. It is the best - thin crust with lots of melted cheese and tomatoes! I pray that someone will build a pizza restaurant like this in the Chicago area. We just don’t like Chicago pizza and enjoy a more New York style with a thin, crispy crust. Why do they cut the pizza in squares in Chicago, instead of slices? Afterwards we fought the traffic on I-drive and made our way to the pool and enjoyed the great weather. It had been cold in Chicago when we left, so it was wonderful to enjoy the heat. Then it was off to bed to get ready for the big day tomorrow!

SUNDAY, MAY 1st

The next morning we drove down to Port Canaveral to drop off our rental car and take the Budget shuttle to the Disney Dream. Thanks to the person on the boards who posted this tip – we had no idea you could pick up a car at the airport and drop it off close to the ship. It worked perfectly and we were dropped off at 9:45 am at the port. The Disney staff grabbed our luggage, pointed us in the right direction and then we were in line to get into the building ( I would say we were about the 30th family in line). The Dream is a beautiful ship and so big – much bigger than the Wonder which we had sailed twice before. I was worried going in that we were too early as I had checked in online and had received a reservation time of 2:30 – 3:30. I quickly found out that it doesn’t matter what time you have listed on your paperwork, it is first come, first serve when you arrive at the port.

We received our boarding card and I was excited and relieved to see we had a #3 boarding card. We quickly checked in, received our Silver Castaway lanyards and found a great table and chairs next to the Mickey ears gangway area by 10 am. Kristina called and said they were still about 90 minutes away and they would let us know when they were here. As time went on, the terminal became more & more crowded with families. I was concerned that Kristina & her family would be boarding much later than us as I kept checking out the numbers that were being given out. Within about 45 minutes from the time we received ours, they were on boarding card #12. Finally at 11:30-11:45, Kristina, Mike & Kai showed up. We had not seen them since Christmas and our grandson had grown so much! They got into line and received boarding card #17! I thought we would have to wait an hour or more for them on the ship, but Kristina checked with a Disney cast member who told her that our entire family could board under our #3 boarding pass. Such a relief!! Thank you Disney!

They called our boarding group and we were on our way to boarding the ship! I love how the Disney cruise line introduces the family as you board the ship. It’s such a fun, classy touch. We were escorted by a cast member who gave us information on the ship and gave us our choice of the Enchanted Garden or Cabanas for lunch. We chose the Enchanted Garden as we have enjoyed doing the lunch buffet on the first day at Parrot Cay. If I had to choose again, even if we didn’t have a 2 year old along, I would choose Cabanas. I think the buffet set-up is better there and they can handle more people easier than the Enchanted Garden. The restaurant is beautiful and we were given one of the booths, which is fun. We noticed that right across from us, the other booth was table #59, which was our table for dinner that night! So we were very lucky and got booth seating for both lunch & dinner. Our dining rotation was EG/RP/AP/AP but we had reservations for Palo on the 3rd night so we would have dinner at AP only once.

The lunch buffet was very good, almost identical to the Wonder. The only difference I noticed was that the desserts were in a case and were served to you. On the Wonder you just take what you want from the dessert buffet. They also seemed to have fewer choices than on the Wonder, which was surprising. We enjoyed our buffet, especially the shrimp & crab, then we finished up so we could explore the ship! We went up to Deck 5 to make sure that Kai was enrolled in the correct times for babysitting. The nursery for the little ones was very nice, but as our daughter pointed out, it pretty much looked like any pre-school that you would see except there were no windows. The counselors seemed extremely nice and made you feel comfortable that you were leaving your child in good hands.

After we left, we heard the announcement that you could go to your rooms so off we went! Our cabins were beautiful and I loved the small changes (flat screen tv) that Disney made. I have a horrible fear of heights so I loved that our verandahs were right on top of the life boats. I have never enjoyed my verandah as much as I did on this cruise. We were also ideally located in the ship – practically mid-ship which made it convenient to get around. The aft elevators were not a bad walk either and were a great option to have during busy times. Soon it was time for the lifeboat drill and we were lucky again with our assignment – the Walt Disney theatre! It’s so nice not to have to wear the vests anymore, it certainly goes much quicker this way. They dismissed us from the drill and we were off to the Sail Away Party!

We made our way to deck 11 along with every other family on the ship. We were excited for Kai to enjoy the party, but quickly found out that it was not his cup of tea at all. I have a picture of Kai, Mike & Kristina during the party and it sums up Kai’s feelings about it. Kristina & Mike have big smiles and are enjoying the party and Kai has a horrified look on his face as he is watching the show. I think it was very overwhelming to him and he had never seen the characters before in person. So if you are thinking of cruising with a toddler, I would consider your child’s personality and how he handles new things. Our Kai is a quiet little soul and he likes routine in his life. I think he will have a much better time on a cruise ship when he is older.

I have run out of time, but I will post part 2 of Sunday, May 1st tomorrow. This takes time, but it's fun! :goodvibes

I'm enjoying your trip report! We are traveling with our toddler this Thursday on a 3-night on the Dream. She can be overwhelmed by things too so I can completely sympathize with how Kai reacted to the characters. Looking forward to reading the rest of your report. :)

HI! Great trip report. I will be reading along as you update.

I am enjoying your trip report because we will also be traveling with a toddler. He did ok when we were on the Wonder in Dec. But is going through the terrible 2's now and he is not even 2 yet (will be in July). We have been doing lots of potty training, but we can tell it is too soon. So, he will be in the nursery for at least the 10 hours we are allotted. I am interested to hear how it went with your toddler (grandson) on your trip. Was there anything he liked did not like about the cruise? Clubs? Nemo's reef.

Another reason I am interested in your TR is because of your cabin assignments. We are going to be in 6066 in June. It does not look like the upgrade fairy is going to visit us on this trip, but we are actually very happy and excited with the cabin we booked. I am interested to hear about anything and everything regarding your cabins, the sounds between the cabins, sounds in the hall, your room steward and anything else you may have encountered.

Looking forward to reading more. Hope you had a great trip.

Thank you for taking the time to post a TR.

Thanks for your TR! I'll be taking my toddler w/us on our next Dream cruise :cool1: I can't wait to hear how Kai liked the rest of the cruise :) Did you find it hard to book your SWNursery time slots?

Hi Oregon Disney Dreamer! Thanks for reading my report. I am getting ready to post the next installment.

I think your 3 year old will love certain parts of the cruise. I know Kai had a great time at Castaway Cay and at the pools when they weren't crowded. It's a fun ship!

Thanks for reading my report Disnewbie 108! I appreciate it.

I understand completely about the potty training. Kristina is going to wait until closer to 3 to try with Kai. He is not ready yet either.

Kai enjoyed his time in the nursery. The attendants working in there were very nice and there is a small ratio (I believe it's 4 - 1) of children with attendants. Kristina booked her babysitting time online and then refined the hours when she arrived on ship the first day. She had no trouble making changes and was able to get the times she needed. They were very flexible and great to work with.

Kai enjoyed his room & the balcony the most. We didn't realize that you could open up the verandahs and make them double, so he spent lots of time crawling under the panel and coming over to our side and then back over to his parents verandah. It was a fun game for him. He also loved Castaway Cay and playing in the sand. The water was a little cool while we were there, but he spent most of his time digging.

We took him to the pools early in the morning (by 9 am) and he loved to play in the pool. The Nemo water park area opened late and the water was extremely cold in there which explained all the screaming you would hear.

We loved our cabin and I think you will love where you are located as you will be even closer to the mid-ship elevators. The cabins are quiet, we never heard anything in the hallway or if the door was closed between our connecting cabins, then we couldn't hear them at all.

Our room steward was wonderful. We only saw him twice, but Mike & Kristina were in the cabin all the time because of Kai and saw him often. He was very helpful to them and would bring them anything they needed knowing they were stuck in there at nap time.

Hi OhToodles2!

Kristina did not have any trouble booking nursery time. She booked online and then made a few changes on the first day and they were very accomodating. Some cruises have more babies then others, so I think it just depends. The girls in the nursery mentioned that the last cruise had been filled with babies and they had been crazy busy the entire time, but that on our cruise there were not booked as much.

Kai did enjoy himself on the cruise as time went on. I think it depends on the kid - I saw young toddlers that looked like they were having a ball.

SUNDAY, MAY 1st - Part Deux!

After the party, we walked back to our cabins and put our clothes away. My dresses & pants were very wrinkled and as there are no irons in the room, I decided to find the laundry room. The laundry room is at the most aft point on deck 6 – I felt like I walked for quite a distance before finding it. The laundry is very nice, there are several large washers & dryers, detergent you can purchase using your card and 2 ironing boards all set up. There is also a big table that you can use to fold your laundry. I plugged in the iron and after ironing the first dress, noticed that there was no where to hang your clothes. I don’t know how Disney could have forgotten some kind of hook or rack system, but they did. Maybe they were expecting you to only iron one item of clothing? Anyway, I opened one of the dryers and hung my clothes on the dryer door. It worked fine and I was the only one in there anyway.

We all dressed for dinner and made our way down to the Enchanted Garden with tickets in hand. I forgot to mention earlier that we had been given the late seating and had made a request and were wait-listed for first seating. We did not think Kai would ever be able to make a dinner at 8:30 at night – he normally eats between 5:30 – 6:00 at home. Thankfully we had been given first seating, so by the time we got to the dining room and were seated it was around 6. We had heard that on the Disney ships that the waiters were wonderful with small children, but that night there seemed to be some kind of glitch. After we sat down, we waited for more than 20 minutes before a waiter came over. He asked if we were ready to order dinner and we asked if we could get drinks first? He told us that he did not take drink orders but would send over his assistant to take them. That was our first big mistake – we did not see his assistant for another 15 minutes. It is asking a lot of a small child to sit at a table with nothing to eat or drink for almost 30 minutes. Kristina had brought toys and an iPad to distract him, but Kai by the end of the half hour had just had it. We were looking around trying to find the assistant, when the head waiter came over and asked us if there was a problem. We explained the situation to him, he apologized and called over Mikey (the assistant waiter) to take our drink orders. We also explained to the head waiter that Kristina has celiac disease and cannot eat any gluten, so he went over the menu with her and explained what she could eat that night from the menu. I love the way Disney handles food allergies, I think they are definitely the best in the business at this.

By the time Mikey brought over Kai’s apple juice, he was done for the evening. There was no way he could sit any longer and wait for dinner. It had been a big day and he needed to be in a different situation than a large restaurant full of people. Mike, Kristina’s wonderful husband, quickly realized this and scooped up Kai and said he would take one for the team and get room service with Kai. He knew we had not seen Kristina since Christmas and very graciously let us enjoy some time with our daughter. He is truly the best and Kristina is a very lucky woman.

Our dinner went very slowly, but the food was pretty good. You cannot expect too much on these cruises as far as dinners as it really is banquet food. You can’t have a fine dining experience with 600 other people – it’s just not going to happen. As an appetizer, we all ordered the tuna tartare with avocado tower. The head waiter had them make a special one for Kristina as this dish normally contains soy and soy has gluten so she can’t eat that. Her appetizer since it was freshly made, was gorgeous and delicious. Ours was good too, but you can tell when tuna & avocado have just been prepared. We all had NY steaks with a twice baked potato. We declined dessert as we wanted to get back to the room and see how Mike & Kai were doing. The head waiter (I wish I could remember his name, I am tired of typing these words – I think I will call him HW from now on) told Kristina to come to the Royal Palace for breakfast tomorrow and he would have gluten free pancakes waiting for her.

When we got back to our cabins, we were greeted with a wonderful sight – a happy Kai! He’d had a chance to run around and play, plus eat guacamole and chicken for dinner so he was feeling great. Mike had ordered room service and they brought it quickly so it had been an easy time for him – thankfully! Kai was feeling so good, that we decided to take a chance and go to the show. So with binky and blanket in hand, we made our way down to the Walt Disney Theatre to see the Golden Mickeys!

We ordered drinks at the bar and found nice seats in the theatre. The theatre is beautiful, the main difference between this room and the Wonder is the balcony seating. We were on the first floor underneath the balcony, close to the back door in case we had to make a quick escape with a tired toddler. We thought the show would start immediately, but first the cruise director came on and spoke for what seemed like forever about Nassau and the shopping and excursions that were available. If Kai had not been there, we would not have been so impatient, but there is no way that small children want to listen to a lecture about the pleasures of Nassau – they needed to get this show going. After the cruise director finished her spiel, we then started the show by showing small children being interviewed by the emcee of the show. This was cute for the first few minutes, but after a while became tiresome and enjoyable only to the parents of the small children who were on screen. Kai started to lose it. We tried a cookie and a drink and he wasn’t having it. Finally, I remember what I had put in my purse before we left for the trip and I pulled out something that saved the day. It was a bling ring.

What is a bling ring and why is it so fascinating to a 2 year old? A little background, I work for a company that makes bridal gowns, bridesmaid & prom dresses. We were at NY bridal market last September at a Martha Stewart party and as party favors they handed out these bling rings. The party was very dimly lighted, so as we all put these rings on and turned them on, they started to blink and glow in the dark room. They are made of a silicon rubber and have a small battery embedded in the ring. They look like a large flower ring. We fell in love with them, got back to the office, found the rings and ordered them for prom season to advertise our line. I had taken one (we ordered thousands and everyone got one) and put it in my purse for Kai as I thought he might like it and he did! He put the ring on his finger and proceeded to sit quietly and wave his hand around with a big smile on his face. He loved the show and got such a kick out of watching the characters and the songs. It was more fun watching him enjoying the show then watching the show. Mike & Kristina were so happy to be able to enjoy the show & enjoy their son at the same time. So, if you take your toddler to the show, be prepared and have something to keep them happy while they are sitting for an hour. That’s a long time if you are two!

After the show we made our way back to our cabins, turned on the tv and just relaxed. It had been a wonderful first day and we were ready to enjoy our 2nd day.

I have scanned some pictures in of us and will try and figure out how to post them in the next day or so. I always enjoy seeing the people that are mentioned in the trip report - it just seems to enhance it. So hopefully I will be successful - cross your fingers! Thank for reading everyone!

I'm so sorry your dinner in Enchanted Garden didn't go that well. :sad2: I don't understand how they could expect a toddler to sit that long without any food/drink. My LO would have reacted the same way. I'm glad to hear he liked the show popcorn:: How was the view from the back rows? I think we should also sit in back in case we have to make a fast escape w/ a tired/grumpy toddler. Thanks for the great tip. I'm going to make sure we take the binky (we call it a mon) and blanket just in case. :thumbsup2

Thanks Peggy. Great info. You have eased a lot of my worries. We are getting so excited. I am really enjoying your TR.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

I am really enjoying your TR. My youngest DD will be just shy of 3 when we cruise so all the tips and experiences from fellow DIS-ers who are traveling with little ones are of a particular interest to me- and immensely helpful.

Yay, it worked! This is a picture of our family. Left to right we are: Dan, Peggy, Kai, Kristina & Mike. This is us boarding the ship.

This is the picture I mentioned earlier of Kai at the Sailaway Party. As you can see from the expression on his face, he is not exactly having a great time. But it does get much better!:woohoo:

Loving your post. We cruise a week from Sunday with my son who's 22 months old, so I bet a lot of things will be similar for us.

Sorry for the delay in posting - I have had a crazy week at work!

On Monday morning we woke up to a beautiful sunny day. We hadn’t docked in Nassau yet, but we were getting close. We got dressed and there was knock on our shared door and Kristina, Mike & Kai were up and ready for breakfast too. We decided to try the Royal Palace for breakfast – big mistake. Don’t go there with a toddler. It is much easier and more enjoyable for the kids to eat breakfast in Cabanas. After our experience at Royal Palace, we made sure that we ate at Cabanas for breakfast. Our server was slow, unexperienced and he barely spoke English. It took forever to just get drinks, and then even more time to place our order. Kristina asked for toast and peanut butter for Kai and the waiter did not know what peanut butter was. On the kid’s menu, there is an entrée of a pancake with peanut butter, so we pointed to that and he brought Kai that meal. It was like he had memorized the menu and he only understood what was on listed there. Kristina saw the manager, who the night before had promised her gluten-free pancakes and he said he would take care of it.

A few minutes later a waiter came around with a tray of pastries and Kai spotted something that look good to him – a mini chocolate chip muffin. This became Kai’s favorite food (except for ice-cream) on the ship. He loved those muffins! Everyone’s breakfast was brought out except for Kristina’s and she was told it would be right out. We finished our breakfast and still no gluten-free pancakes. The manager came by and said he would bring it – 30 minutes later she got her pancakes and they were ice cold. At this point, Kristina decided she would get something at Cabanas and let’s get down to the pool so Kai could swim. At Cabanas, Kristina asked to speak to the head chef theree and told him about her gluten allergy. He offered gluten-free pancakes and she had a plate of them hot off the grill 5 minutes later.

By this time we were docked at Nassau, but we had no desire to get off the ship. We had all been to Nassau and to Paradise Island and there was nothing there we really wanted to see again. If Kai was older, I could see spending the day on the water slides at Paradise Island, but at this age he just want to swim in any kind of pool and he’s a happy camper.

Kai could hardly wait to get into the Mickey pool and it was great because it was completely uncrowded. Kai loves to swim and he spent a couple of hours playing in the pool. Here are some pics of Kai and Mike enjoying the pool.

Kristina & I had made appointments at the spa so we headed off to enjoy ourselves. I got a mani/pedi and did the Rainforest showers and Kristina enjoyed a facial. The spa is beautiful, with amazing views of the ocean. If you take the Rainforest package, you get the use of 2 hot tubs on your own private verandah. When we were there, we were the only ones enjoying this area. It was so relaxing – I would definitely get the Rainforest again.

That night we were having dinner at the Royal Palace but we wanted to enjoy a drink first before dinner. We ordered cocktails at the Cove bar (they have delicious Mai-Tai’s) and found a table right outside the adult pool next to the ice cream machine. What were we thinking? Kai saw the ice cream and wanted a cone right now. It was vacation so his parents decided to let him enjoy himself. Kai loved the ice cream and it became a nightly ritual for him. However, if you want your child to eat his dinner, I wouldn’t recommend sitting where we did. Once they see the ice cream, it’s all over.

Here is Kai enjoying his ice-cream and us enjoying Kai!

We made our way to the Royal Palace and it was so beautiful at dinner time. The chandelier is gorgeous, with glass slippers dangling from it. Our servers were great tonight - they were ready with a drink for Kai and took his dinner order right away. For appetizers Dan, Kristina & Mike all had the iced lobster with jumbo shrimp and they all thought it was great. I couldn't make up my mind, so I ordered both the Pomegranate Duck Breast and the Double Baked Spinach Souffle. The duck was just okay but the souffle was delicious.

We all had a salad next and then for our entrees, Mike, Kristina & I all had the Double Cut Rack of Lamb. Kristina's was prepared gluten free, so no bread crumbs for her. Mike & I both had delicious, juicy cuts of lamb, but Kristina's had been pre-ordered at breakfast (sorry, I forgot to mention that) and it had been cooked a long time ago and it was dried out. Dan had the beef tenderloin with lobster medallions and he enjoyed it. Kai ordered pasta but he wasn't interested in food. Thankfully we had brought an iPad so he watched a tv show on that. The iPad saved us more than once - they are great at keeping kids occupied while the parents are enjoying a dinner. Kristina had loaded hers with Elmo games & Kai's favorite tv shows, so he was happy for almost an hour!

After dinner we went shopping. The stores are much bigger and there are more of them than on the Wonder. For Mother's Day, Kristina & Mike bought me a Dooney & Bourke purse which I love. It is the Inaugural Cruise print. We also went to Shutters but it was crazy busy so we decided to come back the next day and check out our pictures.

Tomorrow is Castaway Cay day!
