So after watching some Travel Channel shows and also the DCL DVD the family is open to going on a cruise. Planning to book for 2014 or 2015 if needed (pending availability and price). Looks like the Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Porthole is a good fit for us. We like it quiet so I was looking at the front of the ship, at the end of the hall for less traffic. We don't mind a walk to any activities at the rear of the ship. Also, the kids want to be able to easily climb into the porthole ledge so a cabin that puts the bottom edge of the porthole level with the mattress of the fold-down bed would be ideal. I see that they are on several decks, 7-9 and some on 6. What are the differences on these decks? Looks like deck 9 cabin 9500 or 9000 would be good. What is in the grey area between the cabins forward of cabins 9007/9507 and also the grey areas of the cabins themselves? Any pros/cons of the different sides of the ship?

Read the stateroom reports to find out which rooms have the pull down bed. As far as floor to pick, all the rooms are good on 7 8 and 9. They are quiet all over but elevator is less busy in front and back of ship. We have stayed on both ends and there is no difference in vibration or motion. On the 6th floor there are some rooms above some noisy areas of ship. On the dream most prefer starboard side for views.

9007 and 9507 on the Dream are actually interior staterooms, not oceanview. The grey areas are not part of the stateroom -- it could be mechanical, storage, crew areas or anything else non-public.

We had a 9A room 7506 which had the large windowseat porthole, but I think most of the category 9's do not have the windowseat. Obviously a few 9's do, though I think you either need to research the stateroom reports or go with a category 8 if you want the windowseat. We just got it by luck I guess. The kids should be able to climb onto the windowseat, but I since we didn't have the murphy bed I can't say whether it's the same height. If sitting in the window seat is important, avoid rooms on the very front of the ship as their front wall is slanted.

Many of the category 8A rooms are different - they were originally designed to be HA but aren't completely. These rooms tend to be more square, and some have a walk-in shower (no tub).

Keep in mind that while some Deluxe Family Oceanview Rooms can sleep 5, unless you are booking for 5 passengers you may not get all the beds.

Enjoy your cruise!

If you have any concerns about sea sickness I would say to look at the middle, you feel the waves less there.

This picture shows our porthole in a 9A forward. It was the furthest forward on the starboard side (the next room forward is an odd-shaped HA room and beyond that are rooms across the front with slanted windows). I believe category 8s would have a couple more feet between the couch and the window.

Lanejudy, was your window-seat as big as the one in the picture above (behind curtains)? We have that room booked for our cruise next march. Did you like your location?

Yes, in fact that's my picture above! We liked it very much. There was some minor noise from the thrusters as the ship docked, but it wasn't bothersome and we were always awake so it didn't wake us up.

Thanks. It is your picture! I don't know how I didn't notice it yesterday. Kids are very excited about about the window seat :)

We have stayed in 9506 twice and have it booked again for September. It is an 8b with the Murphy bed, large porthole, round tub, but no upper bunk. You can easily sit/nap in porthole and yes it is the level of the folded down Murphy bed. It is very far forward on the starboard side. We absolutely love this area of the ship. No hallway traffic. Close to laundry/ironing. Up to pools easily, down to theaters. Must make long walk to MDRs and kids club. The ship USUALLY backs into CC, so an amazing view if the island/beach right from the porthole. If you look up from this particular room you can see the Captain and crew.....you might get a wave ☺☺:)HTH!

We have done a Deluxe Family Oceanview twice. Port forward on deck 7 and starboard forward on deck 8 (Dream/Fantasy). Both with the oversized sitting window were great for the kids to sit in and watch the views from. Starboard better for views of CC as you overlook the beach. Deck 7 had the laundry across the hall (no real noise as offset door to room) but preferred deck 8 for the view and 1 less deck if using the stairs to go up.

I now seem to have a starboard preference (have chosen for our next two cruises) for the CC views, fireworks view if the weather not conducive to being on deck or our youngest does not last long enough for and for some unknown mental reason (sort of like people have a preference for turning left or right into a parking spot that they do not even recognize).

We had an 8A on the Disney Fantasy this past January. Our 8A was a big open room with a pole in the middle. It had 2 large portholes (around 5 feet wide) and slept 4. It only had one bathroom which was small. It was on deck 6. You might want to look at the 8As for the Fantasy/Dream. They are very nice :thumbsup2

We had cabin 8510 on the Dream... loved the location because it was at the front of the ship with very little traffic. Also, it's on the starboard side with a great view of Castaway Cay when the ship backs into the port.

Which room did you end up in? We are in 6510 this October and would love to see some photos.
