We have 12524 booked on the Dream. It’s right below Currents Bar. If you’ve stayed in that suite, do you smell the smoke if sitting on the verandah? Wondering if we should move our room closer forward 😩

I haven't been in that suite (I'll be in 12518 in Dec), but I don't think you have anything to worry about. The designated smoking area in Currents Bar is on the port side of the ship; You are on the starboard side.

I was in 12508 (starboard)-yes, I could smell smoke. Wasn't happy about it at all
People may hate me, but is it time to just ban smoking outright? It seems we smell it on our verandah on a somewhat frequent basis and on other parts of the ship. Can smokers ger their fix from vaping for a week? I'm a bit ignorant on the subject, but the smell of traditional cigarettes really bothers me.

I agree!

You were that far forward and smelled smoke??!! Ugh!! I’m sorry to hear that.
Yes-we had a very quiet voyage in terms of seas and wind. Maybe that contributed? I don't know, but at times it was unbearable. People seem to gather more on the port side to smoke up there, so we did have times when it was ok. I agree with brentm77. I know it is not a popular opinion, but maybe it is time to just stop. Or at least keep it to one spot.

As an asthmatic I absolutely agree. Had to leave Keys one day last week on the Magic as the smell was triggering my asthma.

I don’t smoke and have not smelled the smoke on the cruises I have been on.

I thought they had like a vacuum system in the bar area though?

I have on many occasions smelled/seen smoke on our balcony at various resorts. Once at AKL, the room to our left and above us (we were on 4th floor) were smoking. One was a pipe- which brought memories of my grandfather back but the cigarette smoke from next door was not pleasant and blowing into our area.

Also once at POFQ, there was a group of 4/4 smoking on the stairwell. We had to walk through that to get downstairs.

I digress, the smoking area in the shops should have a vacuum system so that the smoke does not travel spread to guest areas.

I quit over 20 years ago and whole handedly agree. The smell of smoke for an ex-smoker is even worse. The parks banned it, it is banned on all public transportation, the cruise ships should be next.

I thought smoking was not allowed in the rooms and limited to a smoking area in the back of the ship. If I smelled smoke from another verandah, I'd be on the phone to security.

There’s a smoking section Forward too. On the Dream it’s Currents Bar which is right above the concierge section.

No, it's not the same and there would still be complaints from non-smokers.
That's what I was wondering. I don't mean to get too out in the weeds, but isn't it psychological, since you can get the nicotine from vaping? If so, maybe the benefits to the 95%+ of the passengers who don't smoke may be worth the complaints.

I'm not one of those high-horse people. I was around it a lot growing up and don't make any moral judgments about those who choose to smoke. I just really dislike the smell and have had to go in from my verandah multiple times because of it. If that could be prevented better, I wouldn't complain about a spot up top to smoke.

On a side note, the very first cruise I took as a teenager, I somehow got talked into smuggling my older brother's cigarettes' on board. He panicked at the last second and, for some reason that escapes me now, decided it would be less concerning if I was the one caught with them.

I think the issue is that security wouldn't know where it was even coming from when you are out in the open sea. I'm sure they wouldn't really do anything.

I imagine its also the feeling of it in your hand and the heat from having it lit/breathing it in. Not a smoker, and I get honest to goodness full on migraines if I'm around it, but I can definitely understand why its a hard habit to leave ashore.

Maybe it's psychological for some, but not for me. I smoke cigarettes because I enjoy them. I can honestly take it or leave it, so the nicotine "fix" isn't an issue for me. Vaping would not be as enjoyable for me. The cruise should be enjoyable for adults, as well as the kids and the smoking areas are high, on the back of the ship. If someone is worried about smoke somehow wafting to their balcony from Currents, then my suggestion would be to get a stateroom in the front or center of the ship.

It's understandable that it should be enjoyable to you. The problem with smoking versus most other activities is that it is nearly impossible to do without affecting other people in a pretty negative way, sometimes severally in cases of health issues. So the question becomes whether the externalities of smoking are higher than the benefits to the small percentage of passengers who do it. It's a debatable question, and I am not convinced I am right. I just raised it for discussion purposes.

Honestly, if Disney could limit it to the designated area, I'd be a happy camper. The issue is that people do it on their verandahs often enough that I haven't yet had a cruise where we had to go inside from our verandah at some point because the smell of cigarette smoke was becoming a nuisance. I can't think of an effective way of fixing that without an outright ban on bringing cigarettes on the ship.

Thanks for sharing your perspective.

I get it, but at the end of the day, smoking is still legal, so those of us who smoke shouldn't be treated as if we are committing some sort of crime against humanity. However, I do agree that the rules of not smoking on the verandahs should be followed, due to the proximity to other guests who may not smoke.

Edited to add - if smoking is completely banned on board, I bet the amount of smoking on balconies will increase. People who are indeed addicted, will not be able to quit cold turkey to be on a ship 24/7 and not smoke.

You are probably right. The lack of indoor smoking is a huge plus for us on DCL too, so I'll just be grateful for that.
