Hello

I have heard a lot of people talking about taking dramamine for motion sickness before riding .

Where can I buy this - we are coming from Australia, does anyone know if I can get it here.

Thanks

Don't know if you can get it in Australia but it is Meclazine(some spell it Meclizine). Also known as Antivert or Dramamine.

It can be either a prescription drug or purchased OTC (over the counter) in this country.

I would think it's sold in a pharmacy there, it may also be sold at the airport since it's for air sickness, motion sickness, nausea etc.

I've seen it in the hotel gift shops (pricey) but if you go by a Wal-Mart or Target or even a grocery store you can buy it in the U.S for a low price.

(Three of my close family are pharmacists and after retiring from teaching I now work in medicine as well:))

They also sell it at all the gift stores at Universal. You just need to ask at the counters.

I have heard that even the non-drowsy Dramamine can make you sleepy. I bought meclizine for $4 for 100 pills at Target. You may have to ask the pharmacist for it as it was behind the counter at ours even though it is OTC.

Non-Drowsy Dramamine is meclizine. I think in Australia it is sold as Ancolan.

Technically? It's "Dramamine LESS DROWSY". It still makes some people drowsy, doesn't others. Same as most meds it depends on the person and the level of efficacy and side effects.

To avoid the long drawn out explanation from the physicians I work for and one of the two brothers who is a pharmacist? I'd ask my family physician.

I've tried a half of one when I've had some episodes of vertigo and it didn't make me drowsy, did work on the vertigo. But again it's not the same effect for everyone out there.

(ps OTC just means you can purchase without an Rx from the physician. You still may have to sign for some things or get them from 'behind the counter' so to speak)

You also could get it at CVS, Walgreen's or Rite-Aid.

Sometimes it's tricky to find on the shelf. It's often with the stuff for stomach ailments (upset stomach, diarrhea, etc.).

i take the prescription antivert.
it works wonders for me.

i have menierre's disease and can't take the generic over the counter one.
(meclizine)
the inert ingredients in that mess me up with my other meds.

i don't get the drowsiness with the brand script.

I have extreme motion sickness...can't even ride in the back seat of a vehicle. I take Transderm Scop...scopolamine 1.5 mg. It is a patch that you put behind your ear and you can wear it for 72 hours. I LOVE IT! I wear it everytime we go to Disney World. The only down side is that it impedes your vision (which is what makes it work). Your vision doesn't quite focus right. It is a little difficult to focus on menus and small prints...but sooo totally worth it. You are drowsy for the first 4 hours or so...but I take it on the way there, so I am usually refreshed from my nap by the time we arrive.

Is that prescription or OTC?

I don't like the drowsiness that I get with other motion sickness pills. Last time I tried ginger pills instead and they worked great!

The transderm scop is a prescription patch. Just to let you know...they last for 72 hours but may not be as effective closer to the end of that time.
