Dramamine vs Bonine?

Which do you prefer? Why? Have you given either to your kids with success?

The regular Dramamine lasts 4 to 6 hours and in my family causes drowsiness. The Dramamine Less Drowsy and Bonine are the same products...they last 24 hours and do not cause drowsiness in my crew. We take Bonine or the store brand equivalent. It works well for us. My youngest has been taking it since he was 9...He would get 1/2 of a pill. We all take it at dinner time. Then if the seas are rocking...we take an additional dose at bedtime. My son is now 11...and he is extremely prone to getting seasick...So he now takes 1 whole pill...and usually another pill at bed time (He also has to take Bonine in order to drive across town in a car!)

This is what has worked for my crew...everyone is different, though...I also have one son that doesn't have to take anything!

You can also ask your pediatrician...depending on your children's ages.

:rotfl2:My DH & I took the ferry to Nova Scotia once. I was warned that it is a tough crossing. I took Dramamine. Later that evening DH and I had a wee disagreement and I bit his head off. As of that day, DH has forbidden me from taking Dramamine. So I take boning :thumbsup2. It doesn't make me crabby and it keeps DH happy.

P.S. there is children's Bonine

Ginger pills worked for me. Also, ginger chews, candies and ale. I often get sick on planes, but have been okay taking ginger. No side effects, great for kids.

I've also used sea-bands (for sale near the Dramamine tabs), which are stretchy bands with a plastic ball placed inside. You wear them on your wrist with the ball placed in an area where an acupressure point is on your inner wrist; apparently, this helps some people. No side effects, great for kids.

Dramamine also works, but it makes me really sleepy.

Never tried bonine, though. I will if the ginger stops working its magic.

Have fun!

Both of my girls and myself take Bonine (the 24 hour kind) and have never experienced drowsiness or sea sickness.

I took the Bonnie(starting the day before sailing as directed), and while I didn't experience any motion sickness, I was tired and discontinued it's use after the first day on the cruise.

Iam sensitive to meds. Took Bonine and felt like a zombie for 24 full hours. I took ginger pills last cruise and did fine.

Thanks all - our 5 yo is very sensitive, so il try the Boninevfor kids, assuming her ped is ok with it. Our 3 yo is too young for it, but also has a stronger stomach, so hopefully ginger snaps will be enough.

A bit off topic. I take a happy pill when I fly..will Bonine react with that? Are they ok to take together or should I not?

For what it's worth....my DD10 gets very sea sick. She does well with the chewable Dramamine (which has dosing for kids as young as 2). It does cause drowsiness, but I give her less than the recommended dose, and it still does the trick without making her too tired. It only last 4-6 hours, though.

For kicks, on our last cruise, I tried the kids Bonine. Bonine works great for me and DD13, so I was hoping the kids one would work well and cause less drowsiness. But, it did NOTHING for her. It has a different active ingredient than the adult bonine--which must be why it didn't work as well. You might want to buy both to be safe.

Also--the 24-hour non-drowsy Dramamine and regular Bonine....dosing is only for ages 12 and up. Anyone's pediatrician give the 'ok' on using smaller doses for kids under 12?

I recommend taking whatever you choose sometime before your trip so you know if it makes you feel too sleepy, jumpy, etc.

Definitely try it out prior to the trip. Don't want to give it to your kids only to find out it puts them to sleep or it makes them bounce off the walls for hours right when you're setting sail!

Thanks everyone! I'll be using it on the flight as the older one tends to get airsick (not horribly, but has gotten sick on herself on two flights), but I won't have much of the occaision to use it before then. Neither of the kids gets carsick much (unless there's been too much cotton candy....which I place the blame firmly on my dh). I will check into the chewable Dramamine, and wouldn't mind if it makes them drowzy on the six hour flight to L.A.!

I used Bonine with great success this past fall and I get seasick in the bathtub. I took one every morning, then a second one just before dinner. I never felt too sleepy to do stuff and I was only sick the first night, before I figured out to take the second one.

My DD8 took Dramamine since she was too young for Bonine. She had no major problems, just some minor queasiness the first night. I should mention that we were passing through a tropical depression following a hurricane that first night and many people, including some CMs were having issues.

I also take 2 a day, as you do once in the morning and another before dinner. It says you can take 1-2 every 24 hours and I feel better with 2 twelve hours apart 99% of the time that is fine. I was on a large catamaran though in Australia's great barrier reef last year and it was so choppy, I took a 2nd one about an hour after the 1st and thank goodness that made the seasickness go away. Thats the only time I took 2 so close together and even in that case, had no drowsiness or other side effects. Bonine is a lifesaver for me after going on my 1st cruise 8 years ago and having no idea how bad seasickness could be or how you could avoid it, thank goodness for tips on the DIS so I know better now!

DD used Dramamine for kids when she was that age...
she couldn't ride in a car without it..

I prefer bonine over dramamine also. my kids have taken bonine (kids version.) and done well with it too.

just remember if you take bonine do not have a few sips of alcohol at the sailaway party. :rolleyes1 I was asleep by 930 that night. whoops! :rotfl2:
