Hello, and welcome to our trip report. We love recording our trips in this format because they make such great scrapbooks for our memories.

Cast of Characters: :earsboy:

Myself, my husband, Rick and our 15-year old daughter. We also have two sons, one in college and one post-college, who didn’t come on this trip. We are not the typical Disney family. Our goal as parents was to show our kids America and so when all our friends were tromping from the Midwest down to Florida, we were tromping everywhere else. The kids grumble about this somewhat, but you would never have known it by the way they enjoyed our other vacations.
Our first real Disney experience was with Disney Cruise Lines (awesome, wonderful, amazing!). We have taken two DCL and plan other one in 2019. Our kids all experienced Walt Disney World for the first time as teenagers.

Which is better: Disney Cruise or Walt Disney World? Hard to say which we like more. They are very different experiences, both wonderful in their own way. We did a lot of this on our last cruise:

There was none of that on this trip to Walt Disney World! :D

Planning:

Our trip planning started in early summer. I had been contemplating taking our teenage daughter on a Fall Disney trip. Our school system has a short break at the end of October for teacher’s conferences and we thought the weather and crowds would be great then. Also, our daughter is in her first year of high school; as a musician she will be required to participate in the school musical the next three years. Those rehearsals span fall break and we knew taking her out of town then would cause a lot of trouble for her. So really it was now or never for autumn trip.

My husband really encouraged me to take her as a girls’ trip, so that is what we planned. (Plans do change, however…) In July I booked five-day tickets and three nights at Pop Century; the last two nights of our trip we stayed at our friends’ house. The day after I booked our trip my niece announced that she had become a Disney travel agent! We were able to transfer our reservation to her and she was so very helpful as we continued planning our trip.

Here are our dressed-up Magic Bands, we also received luggage tags in coordinating colors.

The more we discussed our upcoming trip the more we wanted to include my husband. He had planned to take the week off that we were gone and do some work around the house/yard. I just kept imagining him dropping us at the airport and going back home; we thought he’d be so sad knowing we were on vacation. Plus, he’s really experienced at traveling so he knows a lot that I don’t. We joked with him that we were going to buy him a ticket and he kept saying “no.” But we did it. We added him to our reservation!
I think we finally told him in late August that he was going too. :love1:

***********

Departure Day:

Our daughter went to school as normal and we did a few last minute prep items around the house. We picked her up from school around noon. She got to have the ultimate fun experience of leaving school early and when a classmate piped up, “where are you going?” she could reply, “Walt Disney World!”

Her packed suitcase:

We hit the road in the early afternoon and drove the two hours to St. Louis Lambert Field Airport. En route I got a text from WDW saying our room was ready. Unfortunately, our plane was not. A delay pushed back our departure time. We got dinner at the Pasta House in the airport, which was: crowded and overpriced with average food. Oh well, tomorrow we will dine with Disney!

On the plane: Mickey head bracelets a friend gave me:

How I passed the time on our flight:

We landed at MCO at 10:25 p.m. After retrieving our bags we set off to find Disney’s Magical Express. We had some trouble finding the ME Terminal but when we finally arrived, it was nearly empty. It was a very easy process to scan our Magic Bands and get right on the bus. We did have to wait a while for more passengers, but soon we were on our way. This really was a treat for my husband who usually does the driving. Between adjusting to an unfamiliar vehicle in an unfamiliar town and not-always clear directions we’ve had some stressful commutes on vacation. It was so nice to sit back and let someone else drive right to our destination. I know some people have had bad experiences with ME, but ours was fine.

We arrived at POP Century at midnight, grabbed a resort map and went straight to our room. We didn’t even need to go ‘check-in’ as I did that online. Our room was in good shape and soon we were fast asleep.

Steps today: 6421

$avings: For our flights from St Louis to Orlando, and back, we used a combination of money saving tactics: Southwest points, Swagbucks and discounted Southwest cards at Sam’s Club and Target. Total out of pocket for three round trip flights: $420.

Tomorrow: Magic Kingdom and Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party!

Magic Kingdom & Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party

We slept until 8:30 a.m. Originally, we had breakfast reservations at Be Our Guest, but I had cancelled them. We were glad of that since we had such a late night before. Our intentions were always to hit rope drop, but I don’t think we ever did.

We ate a muffin in our room and left POP at 9:30 a.m. The bus to Magic Kingdom arrived right away (standing room only) and we were on our way. It was raining lightly when we arrived so we didn’t take a lot of photos, but headed straight to our first fast pass reservation: Peter Pan’s Flight. This was our first experience with this attraction and we all enjoyed it.

Next up: People Mover:

Why do we love this ride so much? It’s so simple, but it’s relaxing and when the temps are high, there is a nice breeze. Plus, new view around every corner. Yep, we love TTA People Mover!

Next we rode Astro Orbiter. The wait here was about 15 minutes.

This is what you get when you have a mom who is inexperienced at selfies and a husband who doesn’t know you are taking one.

A random bird picture, but it does show you the crowd level at about noon on a Tuesday in October when there is a Halloween party that night.

After Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin, it was time for lunch.

We chose Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe and sat inside. This restaurant has a lot of seating; it seemed everywhere I turned there was another dining area. I had the chicken breast nuggets with green beans. They accidentally gave me fries, too. The nuggets were good, but the green beans were delicious. I love vegetables, and this really was one of the best things I ate the whole trip. Rick had barbecued pork sandwich with fries and Carrie had grilled chicken sandwich with fries. All the food was good, but Carrie noted in my journal: Chicken bacon sandwich doesn’t have much bacon. Chicken was dry. Get chicken nuggets instead.

Now fully stuffed, we took a leisurely ride into the past and future on the Carousel of Progress. It was practically empty.

We were ready for more excitement by now and used our FastPass Plus on Space Mountain. After riding, we went to the nearest kiosk and scheduled another Space Mountain FP+ to use immediately.

Stopping in front of the castle for a photo.

We traipsed across the park and saw this guy near Frontier Land.

We waited in standby for Splash Mountain. This is where my real-time wait app was very helpful. The posted time was 45 minutes and I saw several people turn away from that. Our actual wait time was about 25 minutes. Near the end of our wait it started raining.

After Splash Mountain, we staked out a spot near the hub to watch the Festival of Fantasy Parade. Rick and Carrie went and got Dole Whips and the rain continued.

At this point, there was an announcement saying the parade was delayed. I had planned on us going back to the resort to change into costumes, but Carrie really wanted to see the FoF Parade, so we waited. They did the “delayed” announcement three times and then cancelled the FoF Parade.

Don’t rain on my parade!

Substituting the Rainy Day Cavalcade…

Trickle, Trickle, Splash, Splash
Tell me how long will this rain last
The rain keeps droppin', there ain't no stoppin',
Tell me how long will this rain last

After this very short parade we headed to the bus stop. FYI, the POP Century bus is at the very end of the “terminal”, so keep walking!

Next Up: Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party

***************

Our rest at the resort was shorter than we would have liked but I didn’t want to have to deal with long lines getting back into the park which I read happened near 4 p.m.

I love the holiday touches that Disney does. I’m not a fan of graphic/horror for Halloween, but cute and colorful décor is just my speed.

We are all dressed for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. Carl and Russell

Russell and Kevin the Bird

The first thing we did was use a 4th FastPass Plus for Big Thunder Mountain. The park was getting much more crowded by the time we finished riding. Next up was Pirates of the Caribbean.

By now we were hungry and headed to The Friar’s Nook for some grub. I had heard lots of good reports about the gourmet mac and cheese that the Friar serves so we were looking forward to trying it.

I had the Pot Roast Mac & Cheese

It was fine, but not my favorite. The cup sizes are deceptive and it was a lot of food.

Carrie had Mac & Cheese with Panko bread crumbs:

Her note in my journal: “Bread crumbs Mac n’ cheese was 1000x better than Cosmic Rays Chicken Sandwich.”

Since we were over that way we jumped on Ariel’s Grotto, an easily forgettable slow ride through the music of The Little Mermaid.

We traipsed back to FrontierLand looking for a foot of clear space to watch the Boo To You Parade. We managed to find about a half a foot in front of the Frontier Trading Post. Some big guys were there with their families and offered to let Carrie stand in front of them so she could see. (thank you, gentlemen!)

It must have been sprinkling, but we were dry under the shop roof.

If there was a headless horseman, he was making himself invisible because we sure didn’t see him. Overall though, the parade was fun and we would love to see it again.

When the parade was done we waded back over to Tomorrowland to take a rest on the People Mover. Of course we needed a rest by the time we got there. I suppose it’s just the nature of parades/crowds/confined spaces but every time we finished one it felt like we had gone three rounds in a boxing ring. Okay, maybe not that bad, and I can brush it off easy enough—we’re at Walt Disney World! It’s definitely harder on my husband who has back issues. He can walk all day and he runs regularly, but standing in one spot is a killer for his back. And of course, Disney parades involve a lot of standing before/during/after.

After the brief tour on the People Mover we were back on Main Street to watch Celebrate the Magic/Hallowishes. (more standing!) I love this show and have to fight off tears every time.

“It’s the Halloween party—we should ride Haunted Mansion!” said us, and evidently half of the park. After schlepping over to the entrance we decided the wait was too long. Instead we watched Philharmagic. It’s another favorite. I work for a symphony orchestra, and I love Disney music so this is a natural fit for me.

By now we noticed that the line for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is not looking too bad. We hop in the standby line and only wait about 20 minutes. The wait line is enjoyable, especially watching little kids playing with the games. The ride itself was lots of fun, although I did notice what others have said about the narrow seats. There’s a ridge on each side of your bum that is tolerable for a short ride, but would definitely be uncomfortable after a while.

By now, my poor husband could take no more. He was finished so we headed for the exit, making a brief stop at the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor. I had the kids ice cream with a scoop of chocolate, drizzled with peanut butter, and it included two chocolate cookies for ’ears’. It was very good—melty peanut butter and chocolate—YUM!! I had read that the kids ice cream cone was a great bargain and that turned out to be true, although there was no cone involved?

Exhausted we hiked out to the POP Century bus (farthest station! :D ) and rode home.

Steps today: 22,875

{Did you notice anything missing? Yep, we attended Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and did not go trick or treating. :o It wasn't high on the priority list for Rick or Carrie. I thought since we had paid all that money to get in we should at least get a candy bar, but they didn’t seem to mind.

Tomorrow: Our first ride on Soarin!

Wednesday, Oct. 28--EPCOT Day, and Food & Wine Festival

Wow, we slept much later than we had planned, but after yesterday, who could blame us? We finally rolled out of bed at 9:20 a.m. and it was 10:20 before we got to breakfast at Everything Pop. Carrie had the kid’s pancake and sausage, I had the kids’ breakfast platter and Rick had the adult breakfast platter.

After breakfast we noticed lots of people in the gift shop and lobby. They were all wearing dripping wet ponchos. It was pouring. Pouring!

We took the bus to Epcot and thankfully the driver let us out as close to the entrance as possible. It was still raining like crazy but we had ponchos so we headed to our first fastpass: Soarin. I had heard so many good things about this ride, but on our previous trip we had not been able to get a fastpass. It was a fun, beautiful experience and I’m glad we were able to ride it. I’ll definitely make this a priority on future trips.

Next we hopped in line for LIvin’ with the Land. We had never ridden this, or even heard much about it. Well, we loved it! How could such a simple attraction be so satisfying? Thrilling? Nope. Pleasant? Absolutely!

At this point the rain had stopped and it was STEAMY! Carrie’s shoes were squishing so we stopped in a shop to look at flip-flops. They were, of course, Disney expensive. If she had loved them I would have sprung for them, but she was indifferent and it made no sense to buy new ones when she had a pair back at the resort. So Rick took the bus back (he’s a great dad!) and got her flip-flops while we took a short tour of Future World.

We got in line for Sum of all Thrills. It moved fairly quickly but still—about a 20 minute wait for a very brief experience. That’s probably a one-and-done for us.

We then made a stop at Starbucks and the smell of popcorn tempted me. We had stationed ourselves near the fountains waiting for Rick to return; this was taking longer than we expected and the sun kept following us as we moved from one bench to another in search of shade. Despite being late October the day was very warm. To cool off I sampled international sodas at the Coca-Cola store. The Zimbabwe cherry was my favorite.

Finally Rick made it back with the flip flops and we all went on Spaceship Earth, which was fun.

Then it was time to head into World Showcase and the Food and Wine Festival. We had really been looking forward to this and started on the Mexico side with Chilaquiles de pollo.

Not too crowded during this time ...

… but a bit of a traffic jam as pedestrians wait for the bridge to lower.

We loved visiting the countries in World Showcase and noticed that this time, Carrie enjoyed it as well. Her favorite was Japan; Rick’s favorite was Italy.

Great weather!

We are Miyazaki fans so it was fun to be in a store that displayed his work.

Carrie’s favorite is ‘My Neighbor Totoro’

In Morocco Rick got the Kefta pocket: Ground seasoned beef in a pita pocket.

Just “okay”

China:

Next we wanted to see The American Experience. Nearby I noticed the Chase Lounge which is available to cardholders of Disney Visa—I have a Disney Visa! Only it’s back in the hotel safe. :headache: No one was going back for it so we didn’t get a chance to visit the lounge, or do the free character photo either. I need to remember to carry that card with me when I’m at Disney!

Anyway, I liked the American Experience. It’s hard not to feel patriotic and proud when watching it. Carrie said it felt like school, but louder.

In Italy we enjoyed a sidewalk performer and continued circling the lagoon trying a more food.

I loved the potato-leek waffle with braised beef in beer with smoked gouda from Ireland.

Next we came to Canada, where I was eagerly anticipating the Cheddar Cheese Soup. I like to try soups just about every where I go (I counted soups on our last cruise) and I make cheese soup at home all the time. After hearing such great things about Le Cellier’s version I was looking forwarding to trying this version at the Food and Wine Fest. And it was ‘okay’. Certainly not the worst I’ve ever had, but not nearly the best either (Here’s to you, Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ in Estes Park).

I also had the Neige Premiere Apple Ice Wine, served basically in a medicine cup, and it was fine.

Epcot Continued....

We strolled back to Future World as evening came on and decided to ride Mission Space (orange) and then headed to a different kind of orange: Nemo. Is it just me or is this ride exactly the same as The Little Mermaid?

Then we relaxed a little more by looking at the fish. This area was nearly empty of tourists.

Our snacking continued with offerings from the Cheese Studio: Cheese fondue with sourdough bread (yum!) and Sweet goat cheese panna cotta with guava gellé

And Carrie had the Loaded mac n’ cheese with Nueske’s® pepper bacon, cheddar cheese, peppers and green onions from Farm Fresh (She didn’t like it and I think Rick finished it.)

We found a not-too-crowded spot near Canada to wait for Illuminations. The reason it wasn’t crowded is you had to be tall to see over the fence. I didn’t really qualify.

One of these orbs is the moon:

The show was good, as always, and we strolled leisurely from the park and made our way back to the bus.

Despite having several snacks during the afternoon, none of us ate a real meal so we were all hungry. We ordered a pizza at Pop Century and enjoyed it back in our room before turning in for the night.

Steps: 20,406

Thursday, Oct. 29--Hollywood Studios

This morning we packed up our bags and said goodbye to Pop Century.

It was so nice of our friends to drop off a car for us to use. We stowed our luggage in the trunk and took the bus to Hollywood Studios.

Our first stop was a fast pass at Tower of Terror.

Even the fast pass line was long as they were having mechanical problems.

We ducked into Starring Rolls for a quick breakfast. This tiny store offered a variety of tempting pastries; maneuvering within the store is tough with just a few people but there is ample seating outside.

Next up was a fast pass for Star Tours and then our first ride on Toy Story (with a fast pass). We really enjoyed it and understand why people love this attraction so much!

I’m so sorry that Osborne Lights are to be no more.

We decided to try the stand-by line for Rock n Roller Coaster and I’m glad we did. The posted wait was 50 minutes, but our actual time was 20 minutes. This is such a fun ride!

A view of the Hollywood Hotel from the Rock n Roller Coaster queue.

Love the theming in these lobby pillars.

As we exited the coaster we noticed Beauty and Beast was about to start. Even though we have seen this production in many forms, it’s still one of our favorites, so we headed into the theater.

There was plenty of seating available. I had used a fastpass plus on this on our previous visit, but I don’t think I’d do that again.

In early afternoon we left Hollywood Studios and took a bus to the Polynesian Resort. We had all been looking forward to doing the monorail tour of resorts and this was a nice place to start. In the lobby we sat down for a while to admire the theming. We hadn’t been there long at all when a cast member began walking around the lobby handing out fresh cookies to guests. It was a nice gesture!

We walked outside past the pool and down to the beach. Here’s the view across the Seven Seas Lagoon to the Grand Floridian.

New Beach Cabana Villas to the right, Magic Kingdom straight ahead.

Back on the monorail we took a quick ride to The Grand Floridian. Grand is an appropriate adjective; everything is big, ornate and beautiful. We even sat and discussed the how much this bouquet of fresh flowers would cost us to buy at home.

After peeking in (and smelling!) the spa store we got back on the monorail and headed to the Contemporary Resort. We enjoyed lunch at the Contempo Café and then headed to the dock.

It was a little warm in the sun and we had to wait awhile but there was a friendly cast member on the dock who chatted with us and made sure we got on the right boat. We boarded and enjoyed a leisurely ride across Bay Lake.

We landed at Wilderness Lodge Resort and strolled up to the main lodge.

This bubbling fountain starts in the resort...

...and flows through the beautiful grounds:

I loved the look and feel of this lodge; it’s near the top of my resort bucket list.

Look at that gorgeous fireplace! Looking forward to sitting by it sometime in the winter.

The sofa is obviously comfy and suitable for napping.

We relaxed for a quite a while and took a look in the shop before we headed to the resort bus (which is very nice!) Soon we were on our way back to Hollywood Studios.

We rode Tower of Terror again and then grabbed a seat for Fantasmic.

Full house:

Carrie’s favorite Disney show!

After the show was over we took the bus back to Pop Century and got ice cream at Everything Pop. Our resort time was over and we headed out to the car to drive to our friend’s nearby house. We have stayed with these friends a few times and they are wonderful hosts. They also live close to Magic Kingdom so it’s an easy drive—most of the time.
We started on the route we were most familiar with (which runs past Magic Kingdom and Disney University) only to find the road blocked at the Grand Floridian. There were police officers stationed just past the GF Resort turning folks around. They told us there were perimeter fireworks that night (it was another Not So Scary Halloween Party) and they had to close the roads on those nights.

Our new route included a wrong turn (maybe two) and we ended up passing Pop Century again! This is why my husband loves taking the Disney transportation system. We eventually drove past Disney Springs and were amazed at how much it had changed in the year since we had last visited.

Finally, we pulled up to our friends’ house, to a very warm welcome. Through their church they host a weekly gathering of young adults, many of whom work at Disney or Universal. Several of these people were at their house when we arrived and one girl showed us a pic of the costume she would wear the next day in the Festival of Fantasy Parade.

We went to sleep in the Mickey guest room (shown in our DCL trip report) and had magical dreams.

Friday, Oct. 30, 2015--Magic Kingdom

We slept late at our friends’ house and they had a nice breakfast waiting for us. Then they drove us to Magic Kingdom.

We went right to the Firehouse to pick up Sorcerer’s of the Magic Kingdom cards.

Thought we spotted a patch from our hometown, but it was another city with the same name.

This ended up being the only time we looked at the SOMK cards, but we kept them, so maybe next time?

Mickey is smiling because he sees one of his biggest fans. :)

And here’s the photo she got:

We headed straight for Space Mountain and used a Fastpass Plus.

Want to ride the People Mover? The answer is always ‘yes’. So we did that.

Then we hiked over to Frontierland and rode Big Thunder Mountain Railroad with a Fastpass Plus.

Lunch was at Golden Oaken Outpost and we were lucky to snag an umbrella table for some shade. And Carrie snagged a photo of her dad.

We used another Fastpass Plus to ride Splash Mountain and then took the little ferry over to Tom Sawyer’s Island. This was our first trip to this area of the park and we weren’t sure what to expect (I grew up in Tom Sawyer’s real hometown ;) )

I snapped this photo of Carrie crossing the bridge

And promptly dropped my phone. This is one of those bumpity bridges where walking on them causes them to bob up and down. This motion jerked my arm and my phone fell and landed right on the edge of one of the gaps near her feet. I came very close to losing my phone in the water and was so glad it landed where it did!

We found a spot in the baking sun to watch the Festival of Fantasy Parade.

What is this?

Time to cool off so we headed to the Hall of Presidents and enjoyed the air-conditioned show.

After the show we hoped to get a Fastpass Plus for another headliner ride. On our map it showed a FP+ kiosk near Jungle Cruise but we couldn’t find it. We did find this:

And it turns out that the Jungle Cruise Fastpass+ and the FastPass+ Kiosk are both right there. It was crowded and hard to find which line was which, so we skipped it and went for another Dole Whip.

Carrie enjoyed this

We browsed a few shops and decided to watch Mickey’s Philharmagic. I like all the musical touches:

Maestro Mickey

Magic Kingdom continued...

Next up was Haunted Mansion Ride, but first a stop by Rapunzel’s Tower

We visited the FastPass+ Kiosk near Philharmargic but didn’t see any openings for rides we wanted. Then it was time for some dinner at Pinnochio’s Village Haus. I’ve always liked their tomato basil soup and the garlic bread knots (which I think they stopped serving?). Rick ordered the salad then ran over to The Friar’s Nook with Carrie to get mac & cheese for her. We sat near the window overlooking It’s a Small World and enjoyed waving to passengers as we ate.

After dinner we browsed Big Top Souvenirs and strolled the back sidewalk to Tomorrowland.

One more attempt to Save the Galaxy from Zurg

And then we killed some more time with Mike Wazowski on the Laugh Floor before heading to Liberty Square to watch the Electric Light Parade.

We found a small patch of land near the Christmas Shoppe and waited. During this time some teens got on the sleigh near the shop and a castmember told them they couldn’t sit there. As soon as the castmember was gone they got right back on the sleigh, but they got caught by her again and she yelled at them this time!

This is Rick’s favorite parade so we are sorry it is leaving MK.

We crawled with the crowd over to the Hub for Wishes and got a great spot by the fountain. It was pretty crowded in the area and I was hesitant to claim the small patch of ground that was open because others around us had been waiting there longer. However, a nearby cast member told us we might as well stand there because if we didn’t someone else certainly would.

Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015--Animal Kingdom & Home.

Look at the cute Halloween goodie bag our wonderful friends gave us!

We started the day with a home-cooked breakfast at our friend’s house and then drove to Animal Kingdom.

Rode Expedition Everest two times with very little wait, then saw Festival of the Lion King.

We really enjoy Festival of the Lion King, as it’s like the greatest hits track from the movie. (We recently saw the Broadway stage version and it’s awesome, too.)

Next up was Finding Nemo-The Musical. Our friend encouraged us to sit very close so we could see the facial expressions of the puppeteers. We got the second row and it was a neat vantage point. The performers are so very talented and the show was enjoyable.

After the gentle Nemo show we took in A Bug’s Life for our first time. Once was enough for me. :D

Lunch was a quick stop at DynoBites, then we hit Dinosaur the ride.

A last stop in front of the tree before we leave.

We took a brief tour of Animal Kingdom Lodge—amazing!

And then our trip was over and we were heading for the airport.

We flew Southwest, and the free Halloween drink helped ease the post-Disney let down.

It was fun reading about your trip - we're heading to WDW in late October and can't wait to see all of the Halloween decorations. So glad your husband came along too! I wasn't certain but were you on a dining plan for your meals/snacks? The soups look so delicious! Thanks for the tips about the chicken/bacon sandwich. We were looking at the quick service menus and this was one that we thought we might enjoy but being bacon lovers, we might be disappointed.

Glad you had a great time!
